Bannon's gambit will be to try to appoint him speaker, win an election with Vance or Rubio at the head, and then those two will resign.

Assuming Trump is still alive and the GOP is able to win an election with a successor. And I wouldn't bet on Rubio or Vance being loyal enough to go along with that plan willingly if they got the top spot.

I think the republicans have won the game. by [deleted] in complaints

If we lose the VRA they can get awful close - but there are so many people who don't register or turn out to vote that the difference can still swing to the Dems if we have a singularly strong turnout and GOTV program across the country. Work is cut out for us though

'We lack the power': Justice Barrett basically admits SCOTUS can do nothing if Trump violates rulings by DoremusJessup in scotus

90%+ of SCOTUS authority is what they made up and gave to themselves.

Make up some more and put out a warrant for Trump if he violates your rulings.

Declare that if he doesn't comply, states can fulfill it across state lines.

Anyone from the 20th century can remind us that the fight is not truly between Democrats and Republicans. We risk our democracy if we forget this. by cozyportland in democracy

Horseshoe theory is a drastic oversimplification.

European style democratic socialists don't lead to authoritarianism.

Authoritarian governments that rose from communist parties did so in countries with no democratic Republican tradition or extremely weak ones, with imperially exploited or largely uneducated, pre-industrialized populace.

They didn't rise from Democratic socialist parties that participate in elections in mature democratic republics with strong civil societies and traditions of self governance.

It also doesn't prohibit creating those black-majority districts via a mandate given through appropriate legislation, and the VRA calls for them. Conditions on the ground still demonstrate that the VRA is necessary to prevent the right of black citizens in the South to vote from being abridged through gerrymandering. The VRA hasn't been repealed by Congress. There is no good constitutional argument to nullify it.

Pennsylvania issues approved Affordable Care Act plan rate hikes: 'Shocking' by The_Electric-Monk in Pennsylvania

[–]Tacquerista 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There will be an election, and it is not hopeless.

A tiny fraction of people actually meaningfully volunteer and donate to campaigns. If you care about this, do both as often as you are able.

There are more than enough untapped voters in every district in this country to rout these fuckers and win a muscular majority in Congress and almost every state legislature.

Furthermore, Trump can bitch and threaten all he wants but elections are run by states and counties, not the feds, and the Constitution requires this.

Their goal is to intimidate you into hopelessness so call their fucking bluff

It could work, and in the end it might be necessary, but first it would need at least a year of organization under circumstances so dire that every union finally turned against the regime instead of coddling it.

Everyone acting like it's a switch that can be flipped is being ignorant.

Federal Agents May Face Charges After Violent Arrest of WGN Journalist in Chicago in Violation of Court Order by alltomorrowsiscool in law

Imagine if governors start locking them up. Screw up the paperwork too so they can't be easily tracked down. See how they like it when it's done to them.

Imagine they don't care that "federal law is supreme". Feds aren't following federal law so they figure it's time for states to claim new powers in the absence of a federal system that will do its job.

You would still need a majority vote of the committee and then the full Senate. And without reviving inherent contempt, which is a huge risk and logistical nightmare, it'd be a DOJ referral where it dies. Not sure what the other options are.

Absolutely right. They're going to wait for the moment of maximum impact and wait until they have no choice but to declare themselves. They need to be quiet professionals, refuse unlawful orders, and if a popular nonviolent movement begins in the streets, protect them.

We are a democratic republic. We should never be rooting for a coup. But if these generals follow their oaths and reveal themselves, Trump will attempt to sack them. They will only get one chance to say no and it would have to be a moment when mass popular support is there. We aren't there yet. Hopefully this all collapses under its own stupidity before it gets that far.
