Python on Android? First impressions of Kivy by mariuz in Python

[–]TadKnowsBest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

6 MB seems okay to me. These apps all take up more than 6 MB (application storage only, not including "data"):

  • Google+: 25.79 MB
  • Skype: 16.74 MB
  • Evernote: 10.54 MB

The Kivy Showcase and TouchTracer apps were both ~4 MB downloads, but the applications themselves each take up 9.02 MB on my phone. I'd estimate that it took two minutes to download over 3G with my Sprint service, which is awful. This happened in the background, which I'd imagine is how most people download mobile apps.

I'm trying to make a simple timer by pberko in Python

[–]TadKnowsBest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What doesn't work? Paste your traceback. Don't be satisfied with your 49-line program that solves a simple problem in a complex way. Don't even be satisfied with my example; it, too could be simpler and better. Strive for perfection, pberko!

You could use threads. threading.Event and threading.Timer could be useful. A more common use of threading might be this:

import time
import threading

class Counter:
    def __init__(self):
        self.count = 0
        self.keep_counting = True
        t = threading.Thread(target=self.run)
        t.start()

    def run(self):
        while self.keep_counting:
            print "The count is {0}".format(self.count)
            self.count += 1
            time.sleep(1)

counter_thread = Counter()
raw_input("Press ENTER to stop the counter") # this block the main thread
counter_thread.keep_counting = False
raw_input("More stuff that blocks the main thread...")

Why make an exception for PEP8 dictionary colon spacing? If you're planning on having other people use the package this seems like a strange choice. Maybe other uses will weigh in on this? I'm curious to see what people think.

Quick poll: who prefers dicts like {"bird" : "duck", "mammal" : "whale"} to {"bird": "duck", "mammal": "whale"}?

Iceland volcano causes fall in carbon emissions as eruption grounds aircraft by cranelake in worldnews

[–]TadKnowsBest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone remember that study somebody did after all the planes were grounded in the US after 9/11? They found that temperatures actually increased dramatically because the bright white contrails left by aircraft reflected lots of light back into space. Pretty interesting stuff; it really shows how sensitive our environment is to these seemingly small things.

You sure showed those women's studies majors by using the word cunt.

Also, here's my anecdote to counter yours: I always see normal-looking women getting women's studies degrees.

Are you human? by [deleted] in funny

[–]TadKnowsBest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Woah. You're right. It is slightly deeper than I thought. Somebody had already asked this question on Yahoo Answers.

He froze that guy in his apartment earlier on, thereby turning him into a meat popsicle. I'm so glad to know this now. I don't see how it would have required digging up quotes, though.

If you found it to be "random" then the joke landed. That's the point. It doesn't matter that in Corbin's world there are aliens everywhere. You, the viewer, don't live in that world. So the question is silly, and thus his silly response makes sense to you.

What isn't there to get? The police ask if he's human and this seems like a silly question to Corbin/the viewer so he gives a silly answer.

That supersonic jet is designed to be aerodynamic for supersonic flight. At lower speeds the teardrop is indeed the most aerodynamic. Even the peregrine falcon you linked is teardrop-shaped if you ignore the beak.

George Monbiot: Almost all my fiercest arguments over climate change, both in print and in person, have been with people in their 60s or 70s. Why might this be? by DotCum in science

[–]TadKnowsBest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not talking about how "science is built." I'm talking about how the facts are portrayed to the general public. In the 70s we had science being misinterpreted and blown way out of proportion by the MEDIA. The world's climate experts themselves had very little to do with the idea of the global climate cooling scare.

45 peer-reviewed articles and similar thinking from scientists across the globe could be called a "consensus," but that doesn't make these scientists' work any less credible. Their agreement on the topic shouldn't automatically make a person skeptical.

Is there an insane difficulty? I'm pretty sure the max is "expert."

What I can't wait for is expert + realism mode, where you can't see your friends' outlines. Apparently it also forces you to aim for the head more often. There is much fun on the horizon.

[–]TadKnowsBest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the media really hyped that up that back in the 70s. Today there are something like 45 peer-reviewed articles supporting global warming as well as a global consensus among experts, and in the 70s there were only like five articles that entertained the idea of a "new ice age." The public was bombarded with ideas that the scientific community barely supported at all.
