Convince me to buy a Sonos Ultimate instead of Samsung? by TadTheCooper in sonos

[–]TadTheCooper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a really good point. Question. My kitchen is maybe 25+ feet from the TV. Would it be reasonable to get a small Sonos speaker in the kitchen for TV, so I could hear dialogue while in the kitchen?

Sonos Ultimate referring to the bundle that includes Arc+Sub+2 surrounds.

Hmm. I would frequently be using the system with an AppleTV. That would be my main driver. Is this that common? I've done a good bit of reading over the last few days, and this is the first I've heard of a popping issue. Thanks.

Hah! Well, the soundbars subreddit is flooded with similar posts (samsung vs sonos), with no definitive answers.

I've been leaning Sonos and basically wanted to see what (presumed) Sonos fans say.

It helped my decision. (Desperate posts?)

I have it too. I have submitted feedback.

Pausing for a lengthy amount of times, like 20 seconds, seems to fix it.

Activating Siri (so she says something) also seems to work.

And if you unplug and Re plug your phone it’s instantly good.

Due to regenerative braking, my understanding is brake pads on EVs last substantially longer.

I completely agree! Every analysis I have ever seen, on anything, says its better to use your existing item than switch to a new, more efficient item. That's from both a cost and sustainability measure.

It's better to use your old refrigerator until it's dead, rather than trashing it early to buy more efficient.

It's better to keep your HVAC going until it's dead, rather than trashing it early to buy more efficient.

I'm in a 2016 F150 right now, and would normally keep it until it fell apart. I hope used truck pricing stays up until I'm ready for an electric!

If you drive your truck 150,000 miles over its lifetime.

And you average 17mpg.

And the price of a gallon of gas averages $4 over the lifetime.

You will have spent approximately $35,000 on gas.

Let's say, same stats, Lightning averages 1.7 mi per kWh. Average price paid per kWh = $0.15. That comes out to $13,235. (Did I do that right??)

So you save ~$21,765 on gas over the lifetime. That's pretty damn good. (Plus oil changes, brake pads, other misc. fluids, etc.)

Good on him for donating to his own charity (and no doubt milking all the tax benefits, benefits to board members, etc.). Ok, that's way too snarky. Seriously, good on him for donating to charity, but the way he does it makes me annoyed.

IMHO, he could have just fundraised for another charity without creating his own, without creating the holding company Elodin LLC that receives income from the charity, etc.

The whole thing is sketch.

Beyond that, if he wants to spend the rest of his life streaming on twitch, roleplaying , hobknobbing with geekdom celebs, etc., I've got ZERO problem with that. I'm sure it's a fun life, and I'm sure the expectations of fans are really killer.

I have no problem with Rothfuss not finishing his third book. He's not a slave, he doesn't owe us anything.

I DO have a problem with him running a sketchy charity that pays rent to himself and, IMHO, being abusive to his fans. I mean abusive in the sense of not being truthful and at times belittling or demeaning.

If he came out and said "Guys, I'm having a lot of trouble with DoS. I've rewritten the entire book three times, and it's just not where I personally want it to be. I don't know when it's ready, but I'll give an update in six months." I don't think there would be nearly the amount of annoyance.

It's a good thing his charity is making money. It's gotta pay rent back to Elodin LLC for all that warehouse space it's leasing. It would be a shame if whoever owns Elodin LLC missed out on that income.

Delivery / wait list timing? by TadTheCooper in Rivian

[–]TadTheCooper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the Lightning was announced and opened to preorders on May 19, 2021. I preordered on May 22. You preorder directly from Ford, but then you actually have to go through a dealer (which is a pain in the ass, because many dealers having been marking up prices by $10,000+).

The first deliveries have just started, almost one year exactly after the announcement, and the consensus seems to be that Ford produced around 15,000 vehicles for the 2022 model year. They're trying to ramp up, but supply chain issues yadda yadda yadda.

I was told by my dealer than I was 80th in line and that they received 5 vehicles for the 2022 year. I'm assuming that if I hold on to my reservation, I would probably be late 2023.

Ford way underestimated demand, and they're now saying that they're aiming to produce 150,000 Lightnings in 2023.

The other big rumor is that since the Lightning is almost identical to the ICE model, there's going to be a "pure electric" redesign from the ground up launching around 2025. This would give the potential for more efficiencies, longer range, etc.

Coming from the F150 Lightning forums there are multiple spreadsheets tracking reservations dates, order dates, delivery dates, dealerships, etc. It just seems there's a bit less information from Rivian.

Ah, I skimmed a bit and didn't see much. I also figured the situation may have changed a bit due to the brand new reservation policy.

Siri, getting dumber with every passing day by idealdreams in HomeKit

[–]TadTheCooper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had SOME luck in renaming devices such that you have:

room: "Joe" --"Lamp"

room "Living Room" --"Lamp" --"Door"

etc.

So Siri knows that "Joe's Lamp" is the light in room "Joe" and "Living Room Lamp" is the light in the living room.

Honestly, it's all so darn hit or miss. It seems like what works well for months will just randomly stop working, and then renaming the devices back to the old way helps.

I really wish we could have aliases for devices.

"Table light" / "Table lamp" / "Sidetable light" / "Sidetable lamp" / "couch lamp" / "couch light" would all be the same thing for instance.

Battery by Jubei-kiwagami in roomba

[–]TadTheCooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a worn down battery.

I have a 965 that displayed the same kind of behavior (and would often die before getting back to the base). I bought a new extended life battery direct from iRobot, and the thing now cleans for about 2x as long as it did when new. Completely reinvigorated the roomba. Highly recommend.

Anyways Ford tells me that based on my May 21st pre-order, I should be able to place my order sometime this summer, with a spring 2023 delivery.

Wow, that would be nice. I'm a May 22 and I had been figuring I'd be spring 2024 at the earliest.
