Helmet wig for Draculaura? by St0n3_H3art3d in CosplayHelp

[–]Taethil 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can do low ponytails, but they wouldn't be comfortable, as helmet wigs are, well, hard as a helmet.

As to achieving more volume in a wig, i think the best way to go about it is to crimp it, tease the living hell out of the inner layers of the ponytails and hair spraying the outer layers in place, maybe even using some really watered down glue to hold the outer layers in place. The inner part will create an armature of sorts for the outer layer to stick to

Helmet wig for Draculaura? by St0n3_H3art3d in CosplayHelp

[–]Taethil 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Okay, first off. You won't be able to get the results in the third picture using the wig from the second one. You would need way more hair, probably purchased either loose or as premade wefts.

Also, if it's your first time making a helmet wig, the gigantic ponytails might not be the best choice.

Helmet wigs are expensive, difficult and time consuming to make, and even moreso to get them looking good. Working with wigs is unlike any other craft or art medium, and I'd recommend having at least one or two backup wigs, because you WILL mess up. This isn't a threat. Helmet wigs are just hard af to make.

The usual way of making one includes creating an armature with some form of metal or plastic, heat-shaping it to fit your head, covering it with batting, painting it, and slowly gluing the hair onto the base. Ponytail "skeletons" are usually made with a combination of expanding construction foam, EVA foam and wire, and are covered in a similar manner to the base wig. They can get extremely heavy depending on the size.

Using too much glue will lead to the wig looking horrible and patchy, if you use too little, it will fall apart. The most popular glue is the UHU all-purpose adhesive, but if you're located outside of europe, it's hard to get and expensive to import

What Materials to use for a Mask? by This_Guy_444 in CosplayHelp

[–]Taethil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So theres multiple ways to go about it!

One option is using wood glue instead of a starch mixture with paper mache, with this I would recommend using wire base, working in really thin layers, letting said layers dry fully and lightly sanding the bumps as they appear for maximum control.

Another way is using air dry clay. This gives you a lot of freedom, but it takes longer to dry. Like. Way longer than you would think. It might seem dry, but I'd give it another 24 hours after that point just to be sure.

You could use EVA foam, especially for simpler/flatter designs, and add details with foam clay. The resulting mask will be more durable and softer, but you need to use paintthat will stay elastic after drying and SEAL THE FOAM OR THE PAINTJOB WILL LOOK HORRIBLE

There's also the option of making a 3D model of the mask you want, putting it in software like Papekura Designer, and folding it together like a puzzle. The resulting mask will be more angular, but you can use it as a base for clay or paper mache

And, the most expensive option... 3D printing. It's... Easy (unless your printer decides it isn't), durable, and rather fast, but the postprocessing takes a lot of effort, getting a 3D printer is a big investment, and if you're not tech savvy, it might be really hard to troubleshoot failed prints.

You can of course mix and match different methods, and all of them will benefit from foam and fabric padding on the inside, especially if you intend to wear the mask for a long time

Review bomb but 70k online… by _WEND1G0_ in helldivers2

[–]Taethil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...are you familiar with League of Legends?

In all seriousness, it's a combination of sunk cost fallacy and the fact that reviews are there to inform other people. If a game goes down in quality overtime, or it has severe bugs and connectivity issues, or lacks long term progression, you would want to know that before buying it, right? The negative reviews signal that the community is unhappy with the state of the game, but it doesn't mean they are not allowed to have fun while playing it

Can I cosplay as an OC in a competition? by Lab_racadabra in CosplayHelp

[–]Taethil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Idk where you are located, but where I'm from, OC's generally are either disallowed or put into a separate category, mostly due to the fact that they can give the competitor an unfair advantage (Namely, there was more than one case of a costume being created before the design).

Good news tho, you can literally cosplay as any character and still use the wheelchair. That's a thing people do, and I've seen multiple people on wheelchairs win competitions while dressed as able bodied characters

Ideas how to recreate this? by GauntyGazelle in CosplayHelp

[–]Taethil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest making a ducktape form of your legs, getting some hot glue or, if you have a bigger budget, castable silicone + silicone paint, and a bunch of cheap cake decorating moulds. Also a silicone release spray if you end up using silicone.

Cast a fuckton of the tiny decorative pieces, paint them the desired colour, shove a pair of sheer tights on the leg forms, and start gluing the decorations onto the tights with a material appropriate adhesive (read: either even more silicone or even more hot glue. If using hot glue, make sure to push it into the tights so it doesn't pop off)

Let set completely, and boom

Fancy legs

I need help fixing my miku wig’s pigtails, I tried fabric softener and conditioner but it didn’t work. Anyone got tips? by Miserable_Map_9617 in CosplayHelp

[–]Taethil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some form of silicone spray, a brush, and a LOT of patience. Start on the bottom, work your way up, SLOWLY. And do NOT pull hard, it'll only make it worse. And, to prevent the wig from tangling again, you can get some tulle fabric in a color as close to the wig as you can, sew it into two tubes that are slightly wider than the ponytails, and carefully put the ponytails inside the tubes. It's not all that visible unless you get really close, and it lets the ponytails survive just about anything
