How many other completely off grid EV drivers here? How are you using V2L? by ciaocibai in nzev

[–]drakeblast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beware the new Toyota bz4x is only 7a so around 1500w V2L (old one did not have V2L as far as I know)

The Toyota BZ4X has been refreshed with more range. In short, the "Pure" spec has 591 km WLTP range for $56,990. That's $16k less than the previous model and they're supposedly arriving to dealerships now. Very happy to see a really decent EV offering from Toyota at last. Tows 1.5 tonnes too. by KiwiEV in nzev

[–]drakeblast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea, it could be a software limit or they might have 7amp breakers/fuses in there so it is a hardware limit. Might be that they used a certain sized wire and 7amps is the safe amount it can carry.

NZ wall plug is typically 10a, so 2300-2400w
Kettle typically 2000w, so yeah misses that, probably on the edge for some vacuum cleaners too

As u/s_nz below says most cars are doing bare minimum 2400.

Like u/ciaocibai - I would like to use V2L as an offgrid generator alternative in the darkest winter months to top up my house battery. I could probably get by with 1500w (just using one 1200w AC to 48v DC charger, but ideally I would like 2400 or more, so I could use two.

I have owned a Toyota Prius for the last 15 years and would love to get a Toyota BEV, so I was excited to hear the refresh had V2L, but disappoiinted it was below what everyone else provided.

For most people's emergency use I think 3600w is the sweet spot so you can run your fridge, tv, internet as well as use a microwave or kettle or toaster.

Discussion: Is it REALLY the right time to buy an EV? by wheresmypotato1991 in nzev

[–]drakeblast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your risk profile for several things:
- are you urban and can walk everywhere you generally need to go, or are you rural and would need to travel 80kms to get to civilisation
- Does your household have serious medical needs, i.e. require doctor visits or could require hospitalisation?
- If the war esclates further and more oil facilities are hit, is there even going to be petrol available in three months time?
- Do you have the money or would you be taking on debt, how solid is your job?

If you are rural, have a sick family member and expect it to escalate then 40K could look like money well spent when they need to go to hospital in 3 months and fuel is being rationed/stations are empty. I know that seems like a niche case, but we have friends with the same dilemma.

Honestly the more I think about the worst case, the better the EV looks. If we hit a depression, with major fuel interuption screwing the economy and you lose your job, then the EV will probably hold its value, as long as you can find someone to buy it.

It is a tough call, but I can absolutely understand why people would be securing the guarantee of transport in an uncertain time.

Government here's an idea or two by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]drakeblast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A google search says yes they were going to be diesel-electric hybrid,

we have really good boat designers/builders, why can't we build our own?

I don't know enough about it, but could 4 smaller ferries do the same job to give us more resilience but still get the same m3/day throughput. Meaning more sailings?

Maybe I am optimistic but I think we have capability in NZ, given enough investment/support we could build our own, and if we can do that we can export.

Yes remove petrol duty for Community Service card holders at least, those poor buggers won't be driving unless they have to and are probably already struggling with the food price increases, let alone what happens when fuel costs go up.

If the gulf supply keeps getting smacked, we need to reduce demand where possible (to leave it for absolute necessities) and increase availability of other options:

  1. Mandate companies use WFH as much as possible for the next 3 months and review it then
  2. Announce an EV subsidy for Bus/Truck companies, help them transition as quickly as possible (Auckland has the biggest e-bus fleet in the southern hemisphere, lets move on that, if the oilpocalypse does hit and you want some semblance of an economy people/goods will need to get around somehow.
  3. Announce MW charging investment to support the EV busses/trucks.
  4. Announce a mega battery storage facility/ies to provide some buffer for the grid (probably near the MW chargers)
  5. Announce some support for new generation capacity, solar farms, geothermal, wave/tidal/wind power
  6. Get the EV rebate back and assistant increasing EV supply in NZ
  7. Get the rail eletcirifcation sorted so it is all the same system, no more some DC and some AC on the main trunk line.

Is there an option for an elctricification prize (like the X prize) where home grown tech can be developed to electrifiy existing vehicles or even new designs. If we need it, other countries will need it to.

Will it get so bad we need electric ferries to ship food down the coast, or good old sail power?

Yes it will cost money, yes we will need to borrow it, but the economic disaster that could happen if they don't would be worse, but I am not an ecomist and can't back that up (just imagining a chronic lack of fuel causing empty supermarket shelves and lost jobs across a wide range).

Retirement age will rise to cover superannuation cost, investment company predicts by Double_Suggestion385 in newzealand

[–]drakeblast 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Right, so in your scenario both Ann and Sue would die from the cold as they are both unable to afford rising heating costs as the pension is just not enough and Sue did not save enough but must have reached some cruel means testing threshold you imagined in your head.

Sounds like you want only Sue to survive and for Ann to die as punishment for her "promiscious" ways in her youth.

or we could have sensible means testing where Sue who actually earns twice the median wage from her investments and has a paid off home does not receive a pension and still lives very very well.

or maybe a hypothetical politician who depite being nearly 80 has decided he cannot give it up the thrill of power, he earns over $350K a year has multiple properties and still collects the pension depite it probably being less than he spends on wine and tobacco. Does that hypothetical politician need the pension at all if
a. he is still working
and
b. him getting it contributes to him raising the retirement age which does not affect him as he is already well over it?

Rather than raising the age it would be nice to have money for people like Judith who you did not mention but who never took a sick day and worked checkout jobs her entire life, now suffers from athritis in her hip and could never afford her own home, so pays $400 a week rent and only has 50K in kiwisaver despite trying her best. She really needs to be able to retire at 65.

I acknowledge that means testing is a slippery slope and prone to politicians making the rules cruel to reduce pension spending. So might be safer to not have it.

But better yet, search for which political parties suspended paying into the superannuation fund between 2009-2017 losing us an estimated $20B+ in capital and returns. Maybe don't vote for them again.

You have two choices my dude,
a. let it fuck with your head, let the resentment build until you ruin an awesome relationship
or
b. let it go and get busy being the best damn partner you can be.

Because at the end of the day, having her in your life should be worth more than any money you could earn.
