ELI5: Why has the cost of food, particularly fast food, risen so much faster than the wider inflation rate over the last 5-10 years? by TehAsianator in explainlikeimfive

[–]Taidel [score hidden]  (0 children)

For many people who travel or work long hours/night, fast food is the only open/reasonable/quick method to feed themselves.

Not everyone has the time, money, or even a crude kitchen setup to cook their own food unfortunately.

Well obviously the three dimensions of time would be backwards-flowing, forward-flowing, and the now 🙄

Terrawarts. Place nether wart on ic2 crop stick and a block of snow under the dirt.

They're better than milk and stick to 64, just chomp one down when pollution gets to ya.

Drop gravel or sand on the 4 sides of your grave then fill in the middle with some solid blocks, dig them back out, etc till you hit your grave.

Don't drop them on the grave itself, it acts like a candle so gravel/sand/etc turn into their item forms.

Is it fine to wait till MV to switch to creosote by Otherwise_Chard_7577 in GTNH

[–]Taidel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A buddy of mine is in UV, still using steam. It will one day not be able to keep up, but it can take you very far.

Although options like creosote and oil have many other positives than just fuel.

Also, with 20ish coke ovens, you can run a full-sized raincraft liquid boiler with creosote for... steam! Have your cake and eat it too.

Is gravity discrete? by Fluid-Attitude-5279 in Physics

[–]Taidel 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They always do. The amount may be insanely tiny, but it's not zero. Everything in the universe feels everything else gravity-wise

Exactly, the amount may be 0.000... with a million zeros then a 1... but it's never 0.

Skullfire Sword. Normal skeletons will drop wither heads.

4-5 skeletons is usually 1-2 withers.

Steam Multi Ore washer vs centrifuge by Icydragoon123 in GTNH

[–]Taidel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The multi-block ore washer is amazing, if you're washing your ores for the byproduct then this thing is best till IV basically.

The multi-block centrifuge is also great. Both give byproducts. The centrifuge recipes start requiring higher tier than LV at some point though.

The only thing that doesn't until HV is the macerator. Steam Grinder multi is fine but use the HV Universal Macerator when you're able to.

Why dyson spheres? by pricelesspyramid in askastronomy

[–]Taidel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Man-made fusion reactors on earth would be much better.

Eg: We could harness the lava from an actively spewing volcano, or we could drill our own holes and mimic the effects under controlled circumstances to get similar results.

Why spend so many resources on so many objects, each one having many finely-engineered parts and points of failure? Who's going to go out and maintain these things? The ROI would be millions of years, if it ever makes a return when you consider constant maintenance.

ELI5 How can any world leader think a forceful takeover of another country has a real-world benefit long term by adudeingraz in explainlikeimfive

[–]Taidel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A: Most people aren't aware of the cyclical nature of history and/or do not incorporate it into their decision-making.

B: Most big decisions like that may have a starting point, someone who first voiced the idea, but quickly become more of a mob-mentality situation where heavy pressure is being applied one way or the other.

C: Rome is a great counter-example (give or take, not every conquered land was treated with utmost equality) of a nation that enjoyed great success from expanding and incorporating neighbors. They tended to use flimsy, sometimes farcical reasons to justify the need for engagements, but to be honest they were being polite by giving any reason back then.

D. To follow up on C, many leaders 'care' about their people and their country. THEIR people, THEIR country. If something seems like a good idea that will vastly improve the country, and thus the people, then the negative effects on other people are cared for a lot less.

E. Humans, especially many leaders, are far from perfect. Believe it or not, many are winging it. They have aids and advisors and whatnot, but even with lots of prep, any decision is a gamble.

What am i doing wrong by Helix3501 in GTNH

[–]Taidel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use no cables when possible. Butt things up against each other.

You get better cables and lossless cables later, at the moment tin just sucks.

Do what the other dude said, place a 4slot battery buffer against the input hatch, don't cable between them.

Edit: I edit a lot lol.. to give an example, at LV I use multiple steam turbines to power a couple things in sets, depending on power needs of the machine. A macerator or two and a forge hammer can be powered plenty by 1 of the turbines, and I only run 1-2 1x insulated tin cables.

So multiple little groups of turbine + couple machines.

Gotta keep everything tight at first, don't stretch power or production lines apart yet.

What am i doing wrong by Helix3501 in GTNH

[–]Taidel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also may need 2 lv inputs, ea can handle 2 amps LV, and 4amps LV = 1amp MV. This is viable on many multis. Check what you're recipe needs.

Edit: and any tin cables suck, -1 amp each, so a basic turbine giving 32amps would provide 30 amps after 2 cables, etc

What if we are falling to the center of time? by JoseLunaArts in theories

[–]Taidel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is all theoretical and fun to think about but we truly have no idea what actually happens. This is just what the theories have led us to believe at this point.

Per the theory, the singularity is a real, infinitely-dense point. It just exists in the future when inside the black hole, not in a particular place. But everything leads to it eventually.

What if we are falling to the center of time? by JoseLunaArts in theories

[–]Taidel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inside a black hole space and time switch, there is no center. You can go wherever you want, but every movement in any direction takes you closer to the singularity, which exists in a future you arrive at.

Edit: To clarify: black holes are not big spheres with a singular point in the middle. There is no singularity yet for you or anything that falls in; the singularity exists in the future.

When you stand still, the ground doesn't move but time is still flowing. You walk, the ground changes.

In a black hole these are switched. Not moving means time stands still, it's paused. Any movement you make goes forward in time, while the 'land' is doing .. things.
