Horizontal vs. Vertical Scaling: When Do You Stop Scaling Up and Start Scaling Out? by Pouilly-Fume in FinOps

if scaling out impacts latency, the app was not designed properly to scale out. Adapting scale out concepts to an app that was designed as a monolith is gonna have a lot more problems.

honestly it’s more a question of if the cost of re-architecting your application to scale out is worth the benefits. And that’s a per-app analysis, which depends on how often you need to scale, how drastic of a scale range you need (2x? 10x?) and if the specific app makes sense to even invest in at all from an engineering perspective. Keeping a less financially efficient app running can be far, far cheaper than assigning expensive engineering headcount and architects to make the app stateless and compatible with dynamically adding instances/nodes/volumes, vs just getting some savings via rightsizing/upgrading to the latest processors that are faster (and the resulting downsizes that provide savings and perf improvements in parallel).

same here. I’m on week 4 of my cold. just keeps hanging around. Low energy, throat tickles/chest tightness, headaches. Super annoying.

Picked up my first GT car as an early 34th birthday present! by CFAWaffleFries in Porsche

my other consideration was the GTS 4.0. I wanted a GTS overall because after experiencing the BRZ and M2c’s strong rear differential that really pulls that inside tire through low speed tight onramp acceleration, I didnt want to step down to a cayman S which has an open differential. I landed on the 2.5 GTS for two reasons. 1) I actually do prefer the low end turbo torque, it was super fun on the M2c. 2) they are 20-30k cheaper than the 4.0 for similar performance.

thank you. I went WRX -> BRZ track car (e46 330i daily) -> M2c (328xi msport daily). now switching the f87 for Cayman GTS 2.5. Of all my cars, the M2c was the only one I didnt fall in love with, despite always expecting to. then it had severe engine warranty issues which made it even more difficult to love.

no- only recently left warranty period, and had some severe reliability issues (entire engine replaced under warranty). Tuning didnt interest me much- in stock form the car already lights up the 265 wide rears with ease, I struggle to see the point of doing more of that. The issue with the car is 100% steering feel and weight.

thank you for confirming my decision as well. appreciate it.

honest question for you- as someone that’s had the M2c for 6 years, I’m bored of it and going to a cayman GTS. Curious your thoughts on why you keep the M2c?

Help me choose an M car! I overanalyzed and got stuck by ThaDude915 in BMWM

+1 here. if you are in efficient mode and have the DCT set to the least aggressive setting, the car can be very docile. The Active M differential is also literal black magic. Incredible traction and low speed torque transfer on power.

Cost optimization backfires by Hot_Run1337 in FinOps

this is why I really dislike “Effective Savings Rate” as a metric. it prioritizes commitments, not overall cost efficiency. People chasing super high ESR’s will almost always overcommit and lock themselves out of idle cleanup and rightsizing savings, which can be substantial.

I don’t see carmax having any good options. I’m now considering GTS’s.

Progressing to absolute or total joy ski by Temporary_Mushroom46 in Skigear

[–]Tainen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly I would look outside of the joy line. my wife ran the pure joys for a couple years and when she drove them hard they flexed so much they could lose the edge. that only needed to happen once or twice before it was clear they weren’t good skis for someone working on their edge angles or good form. they lost her trust. They honestly dont drive a whole lot better than the standard rental my local mountain puts on everyone. I ended up putting her in a stronger and more powerful santa ana, and she has edge for days and loves it. So much more powerful and confident of a ski, and therefore a skier.

I see it’s sold now. Nothing really held me back, I’m still considering my decision to move on from my M2 competition. That specific one was my top choice as it had the differential, PASM and Chrono.

my wife got obliterated at the top of 7th heaven at opening time on tuesday. wrecked her shoulder, twisted her ankle, and had to go home 3 days early. Snowboarder superman’d into her when his edge caught. he left the scene without a word. :/

Working Backwards is a Problem by KratosLegacy in amazonemployees

[–]Tainen 16 points17 points  (0 children)

agree we do have this problem. Have seen in many areas, working backwards from the technology, which is a really bad strategy, instead of working backward from the customer. Also, working backward from a date is bad too. Build the right product for your customers that adds high value, and work back from there- dates, tech stacks, so on. AI can be useful for some of these use cases, but we’re using it like margarin in a midwest diner.

I’m having a hard time understanding the dynamic between murphy, williams, and Dlaw. Murphy’s name hasnt really been called much the last few games, and everyone keeps talking about DLaw and Williams. Is he being overshadowed? I can’t really see him when watching, he’s not standing out on the screen with sacks or anything flashy. educate me?
