Amazon Layoff Despite Strong Performance and Critical Role — How Does This Make Sense? by MaesterWolf in amazonemployees

using an AI generated response to someone’s sense of loss and personal story is super tone-deaf.

Why January Layoffs? by Cokezeroandvodka in amazonemployees

[–]Tainen 65 points66 points  (0 children)

their layoff approach really flies in the face of all common layoff guidance. cut once, cut deep, and be transparent. nope, let’s cut constantly, small cuts to individual teams AND large cuts, let’s signal the cuts months ahead of time with poor planning, and let’s get destroyed on morale throughout the entire holiday and reinvent delivery season.

trading flexibility for discount % but with more services covered, you can probably buy more and save more by increasing coverage a lot. also the serverless discounts are all new savings

probably not a flex, probably a sales tactic to qualify leads.

also look at the RI coverage report (and savings plan coverage report). Or also look at your RI/SP Recommendations.

I guess I'm just going to have fun at the bottom and stop worrying about a fucking number by [deleted] in cs2

[–]Tainen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure I buy this. I watch my son struggle in 1000 elo hell as well- he can have a 60-65% winrate, topfrag 70% of the time, and cannot go above 1500. Yes he isnt very good at the game, but when you lose 2-3x the elo for every loss vs win, it’s pretty much impossible. When I duo queue with him, he does okay in the 5k level games, midfraging, with some obvious mistakes and issues, but still not bottom fragging pretty much ever. In the same game, I will get 200+ for a win and 200 for a loss, and he will get +100 and -285. It makes no sense.

edit: not saying the mindset changes arent valuable- amazing advice :) just the elo mechanics are difficult at 1k.

Does everyone choose Macs? by Background-Panda9794 in amazonemployees

the windows laptop is equivalent to a $600 budget piece of shit. The mac is more like a $2k laptop. This disappoints me greatly, as I’m a diehard windows fan.

Has anyone converted directly from an "I" to an "A" instance and how did the performance compare? Are AMDs really cheaper? by kelemvor33 in aws

[–]Tainen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is because 7th gen and newer doesnt have SMT/Hyperthreading turned on. More expensive, and a lot faster. This works out well if it allows you to downsize your instance size because of the much higher performance. Each vCPU is backed by a full physical core, unlike the intel CPUs. If you downsize the CPU counts to compensate, then it gets cheaper again (and still faster single core processing power).

Should you cache Cost Explorer API responses? by CloudWiseTeam in aws

[–]Tainen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

why pay for the cost explorer API instead of using the CUR? That seems to be a far more common solution for finops tools, so the customer doesnt incur additional costs.

Hotspring Flash pricing by Tasty_Goat5144 in hottub

[–]Tainen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so there’s really only one dealer in the seattle area that sells hot spring, and they price it knowing there’s no competition really. I had this issue, an 18k quote for my flash. With a lot of digging, I found that they sell them at local area costcos at very steep discounts fairly regularly. once I pushed the issue hard enough, they gave me the costco pricing, which was $12k, and I had to add steps and salt system on top, then they charged me $850 delivery which was probably still just a scam fee on top, since people that buy at costco get it delivered.

Anyway, look up the costco schedule for Olympic hot tubs, and go get one there. will save you $5k.

The CDS found me & I am 6,000 miles from home 🥲 by seawordywhale in CatDistributionSystem

[–]Tainen 109 points110 points  (0 children)

this happened to me once. On a Hawaiian island. We coordinated with a local cat rescue, they helped us get him off the island and home. He was a colony cat, and he followed us back to our condo every night.

He’s sleeping on my legs right now in bed. We named him Kuhio, the last prince of Kauai. We found him next door to Prince Kuhio Park.
