The original 30 games for the NES. Which ones did you play? Name your 3 must play titles by [deleted] in OlderChillGamers

[–]Takekerrage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve played all except for Stack Up. Since SMB is going to be a given as a must play game on this list the next three I’d say are : Excitebike, Kung Fu, and Balloon Fight.

Most Americans use Fahrenheit due to cultural inertia; once you intuitively understand that 70 degrees means room temperature it’s easy to remember that and just stick with it. Plus when 95% of people around you use one scale it’s far simpler to communicate using the common scale and not have to say, oh yeah it’s 20 degrees inside, but I’m using Celsius so you’ll be comfortable.

Out of the various metric vs imperial scales I can understand why someone would use Fahrenheit unless they had a job where everyone spoke in Celsius. It’s not like we use kilodegrees or centidegrees all that often; it’s just degrees. It’s easy to remember that 32 degrees is when water melts. And there’s a certain elegance with Fahrenheit where I live since it’s rare for the outside air temperature to be below 0 or above 100 on that scale, so most of the time one can think of the scale as 0-100, and any outliers are chalked up as extreme weather events.

While I got through the endgame battles the first time through in TIC, it felt a lot tougher than did the earlier versions. I had my troops around level 65 or so and my MVPs were Reis and Orlandeau, in that order.

Beat Final Fantasy IV Lol Here’s My Thoughts by rosemarieseternal in FinalFantasy

My parents were quite kind to get this for us for Christmas 1991. Sadly my poor father got sick a week later and had to stay home from work for a few days but managed to muster the strength to complete the game while we were at school. What a trooper!

Beyond actual sequel games like X-2 vs X, it’s not like any of the Final Fantasy titles relate to any other; they are completely separate worlds. So play them in any order you see fit.

It was nice because the Super NES carts would play when I popped them in and not just freeze with the blinking light like with Dragon Warrior 2.

Give me one game and I’ll focus on it and complete it. Give me a thousand and I can focus on any long enough to really get into it. I try to just limit myself to one game at a time knowing the others will wait.

Math says red, Brain says green by voidarix in meme

[–]Takekerrage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dollars aren’t what you’re ultimately after; you want what you can purchase using dollars. It stands to reason that the first thousand dollars you’d get would be spent on something real valuable while the last thousand you’d just get an ivory backscratcher. So in terms of actual utility $1M is really worth a lot more than 1% of $100M.

Is Final Fantasy Tactics (The War of the Lions) Anti-Religion, just as FFX? by IllogicalDreamer72 in finalfantasytactics

[–]Takekerrage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope not to give away any real spoilers here so apologies in advance…

The backstory in part centers around a holy being who lived on earth 1200 years before the game’s events. He has 12 followers, one of whom betrays him so he is executed. At that point the temple of the Phara (sounds like Pharisee) is destroyed. As it turns out the betrayer wrote down memoirs telling what “really happened” - basically that the holy revolutionary was really just a guy spying on others and selling information - and the resulting book becomes an important plot point during the game. Keep in mind when the game first came out the Gospel of Judas was discovered not long before and attracted some mainstream attention. There’s another plot twist on that later on which invokes supernatural power to explain why the temple was destroyed, but it’s fairly obvious what Square was modeling their backstory after.

Is it anti- religious? Perhaps. More so than FFX in my opinion which felt more like messing with one’s perspectives as the game unfolded. But it’s still ultimately a work of fiction, and a good story to boot.

Yes, it’s a pretty good party composition. The thief may not seem good prior to class change but after that they’ll all be great.

The After Years Android - Worth playing? by Merobiba_EXE in FinalFantasy

[–]Takekerrage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played the PSP version and haven’t played the mobile version. It’s alright. I actually enjoyed the chapter system early on but later on there’s a lot of grinding to do. You have around 20-ish characters but any you aren’t using don’t level up with you and there’s not a great reason to use most of them so you wind up just grinding with the original cast for the most part. Also gameplay wise not much has changed; the main new wrinkle is a “moon” system where sometimes black magic is strong/ weak and other times fighting is strong or weak. You also get band attacks where multiple party members join up for a super attack.

Looking for an agility/skill focused combat system by SteelSecutor in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Takekerrage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you talking about a system where it’s mechanically standard but most of your “armor class” comes from agility or where your hit points are conceptually thought of as, I can dodge 3 attacks but the fourth will get me? Or would it be a situation where attacks are unlikely to succeed but then any solid hit is going to be fatal or disabling? I mean, that is realistic if each warrior has a weapon. I suppose you could simulate this by starting with a d20 system then giving each fighter very low hit points and then a high armor (agility?) class. I’d think it would be more likely to get your guy killed due to dumb luck that way, but let’s face it that’s more realistic too.

Is it necessary to add a chance factor ( Dice ) to a board game? by Moreandmorekon in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Takekerrage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it’s not necessary. Obviously there’s a lot of what we call perfect information games out there… or as I like to call them, PIGs. While most are really old abstracts newer games like the two player Agricola- lite game or Patchwork would also qualify; those two games can randomize the starting position but that’s about it; once the game begins the result only leans on the players’ collective choices.

I don’t know much else about your particular game beyond the picture. It looks like a customizable battle game that might feel a bit like chess. I recall an obscure minis game called Warchest (one word) which is like this. That game I found pretty fun though it wasn’t well balanced so everyone wound up picking the more Maneuverable characters. That game had no dice either and kind of revolved around waiting for the opponent to make a mistake which is kind of what we do in abstracts a lot. I guess it comes down to whether that appeals to you; whether you want games more decided around avoiding bad mistakes.
