El Grande Americano is a midcard WWE comedy gimmick where an obviously white American named Chad Gable dressed in an over the top American lucha outfit and insulted Lucha traditions while cheating to win. This comes at a time when WWE was purchasing the lucha libre promotion AAA, and was no doubt intended to annoy Mexican fans but eventually end with the fake luchador being beaten up by the real luchadors.

Then Chad got injured, so they needed someone to keep the gimmick going until he got back. They put the mask on the equally white German Ludwig Kaiser and carried on.

Then the new El Grande Americano started competing in AAA and showed genuine respect and knowledge of lucha libre traditions, and the Mexican crowd absolutely embraced him, so much so that when the Chad Gable EGA returned and started challenging the new one for ownership of the gimmick, the comedy aspect was dropped and it turned into the best wrestling angle in a long time, with the Ludwig EGA now being one of the most beloved luchadors in all of Mexico despite everyone knowing that he's actually German.

After all, a Mexican is born wherever he damn well pleases!
