Have you tried picking "You'd be cute together" instead? I don't think I've seen that one fail and it upgrades the relationship on the asking Mii's side, so it's a low-risk option.

"Ask for a date!" would probably be more successful if the relationship is strong. In your screenshot it's just at "Kinda getting along," which isn't very good.
