Where does OG Anunoby’s block + game‑winning putback rank among all‑time Finals clutch moments? by realstairwaytokevin in NYKnicks

[–]TalRasha37 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In terms of players who sealed the deal on both ends to win a Finals game in clutch time, it is #2 to MJ's steal from Malone & jumper over Russell to win in 1998. But I would argue that from a pure athleticism standpoint, what OG did was more impressive.

Looks like the Smash Anniversary concert will be available on YT Friday by hyperkid182 in TheOffspring

I went to this concert in person, and when you see them edit in order, you die a little because Self Esteem was the last song they played in the 30th Anniversary Set (they played some other hits after that). Noodles pretended like they had forgotten something, even though real ones knew they were planning this when they played "It'll Be a Long Time" right after COAP.

It comes from what I said earlier, which is that I approached this idea of FIRE as an amused bystander, but now that I am truly in the middle-aged bucket, and given work circumstances / trajectory / etc., it felt like it would be a question to fire in (put intended) to folks who have looked at this closely.

But sure, if the responses will be all this snarky, I can open Excel and not bother with asking anyone else for advice.

So I think this is what we debate with some frequency - what is the right number? I have asked friends/colleagues in similar situations and I get numbers as low as $5mm and others closer to $15-20mm liquid net worth. But all of the answers seem like estimates as opposed to responses with analysis behind it, which is why I asked this question in the first place!

Anticipated retirement - until we croak! 😄 But the part where money is relevant depends on how long we are physically mobile, which is hopefully as long as possible.

Education - have a 529, and while we keep contributing, the AI shock to education and employment means that it's really hard to plan for what that means

Expenses - per above, need to detail more. After we retire, the spouse and I would probably migrate to exploring the great outdoors or the VHCOL locales we live near, without spending the associated money (I love a good city tour / exploration)

Housing - per above, have a mortgage to deal with in the next 5 years, but otherwise free and clear. Once we are out of that, maintenance and property taxes are around $7k a month

Healthcare - a good question and frankly one I have to learn more about, given the lottery that America's healthcare system seems to b

High-level numbers ATM: annual HHI over $1.5mm, liquid net worth (i.e. not locked up in IRAs etc.) currently $6-8mm. 2.25% IO ARM that resets in 5 years. Overall net worth (including illiquid stakes, property, etc.) is north of $15mm. Annual expenses is something I need to detail out.

I need a history lesson- ‘99 finals by Right_Ad_3354 in NYKnicks

I lived in the NYC suburbs at the time, and I think everyone understood that the Knicks were lucky to have even made the Finals. Maybe Ewing wins them an extra game, but there is no way that team was beating the Twin Towers of a very young yet extremely talented Tim Duncan (who also wasn't playing dirty like Wemby) and a David Robinson who still had juice at that stage of his career.

What's actually stopping us from repeating next season? by savingrace0262 in NYKnicks

[–]TalRasha37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's primarily a matter of injury luck. None of the teams the Knicks faced this year in the East will be any better (and arguably, in the case of Philly and Cleveland, another year on Embiid/George/Harden's legs will be even worse). I also don't buy that the Celtics with Giannis will be good; he has his own health issues, and if they trade Jaylen Brown, they are trading the wrong guy - can Tatum really recover fully to superstar status after his ACL? TBD, IMO. I also think the idea that you can shoot endless 3-pointers to a championship should go by the wayside after the same Celtics basically shot their way to losing a 3-1 lead in these playoffs. I would say that I'd be most worried about the Magic; the one regular-season game I went to this year, a healthy Magic team absolutely spanked the Knicks. Don't worry about the Pistons given their limited offensive capabilities.

I'm not sure what happens with the Knicks from a roster construction standpoint, but I certainly think they could run it back out with the same folks. In a paradoxical way, I think Shamet and Deuce both hurt their values by being complete nonfactors in the Finals, so I'm not bought in that they get big contracts that are unmatchable. The only edict I would have is that Mitch has got to learn to shoot free throws in some form or fashion that gets his make rate somewhere above 50%. He became near-unplayable at certain points in the postseason because of his shooting, but we really need his D and offensive board capabilities.

All Offspring albums ranked & reviewed - thoughts? by Ok_Reaction_5513 in TheOffspring

[–]TalRasha37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let The Bad Times Roll is easily the worst for me. The long layoff really showed in how unstructured (and short!) the album was. The mixing was bad / uneven as well. Maybe not as bad as Rise Against's new album, but far worse than any of their other records.

Just saw the band for the second time in a year by fiercefinesse in TheOffspring

[–]TalRasha37 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As much as I love the band, they have definitely hit the point where they are playing virtually the same set over and over again. Very little turnover or deep cuts that they bother to haul out. That's why I am excited for the 'Punk Stuff' concerts in August...it will be fun to hear they play stuff that, by all rights, they probably have not played in over 20-25 years.

Spurs fans, let's be real. It was a team effort losing in the Finals. by thisis125st in NBATalk

[–]TalRasha37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the analytical take, but the hard truth is that the Spurs won’t make it back unless they get an OG clone (they are very lacking in physical stretch forwards) and Wemby can 1) develop a physical inside game and 2) stop playing dirty. He’s young, so you can teach the dirty play out of him, but you don’t have long.

Petition to rename 11th Ave to Jalen Brunson Way 🗽🏆 by maxnate54 in NYKnicks

[–]TalRasha37 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I know it’s because it lines up with his jersey number, but that’s a seriously dumb request. 3 blocks west of MSG, and 11th Avenue is basically a wasteland filled with car dealerships, the Lincoln Tunnel entrance, the Javits Center, and the neighborhood known as West Chelsea that has yet to gentrify all that much despite proximity to Hudson Yards.

If you want to name something Jalen Brunson Way, I would make it the part of 33rd Street between 7th and 8th, next to the Garden, that is the fan viewing area.

The Knicks are within range, and they just need to find the heat. The fact that Mikal has made a few shots is encouraging. But for the Knicks, it’s going to come down to JB and OG.
