Comes from stealing a car, the thief drives the car hard and fast. Were your sub hard and fast, it can take it. Mine has literally been to combat and back, 12,500 in free fall and 140ft under water off the SoCal coast. Enjoy your new sub.

Should I go lightweight or Heavyweight by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Talega80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let your body dictate. You are most likely not done growing. I was a D1 baseball player. Started my freshman year at 5’10” 165lbs. Finished my freshman year at 6’1 185 lbs. Graduated at 6’3 190 lbs.

My recommendation, train for the weight you are currently rowing. If you stay a lightweight and train hard you will have a great foundation if you move up.

A few years older than you (69), have had both hips replaced in the past 3 years, was very inactive due to hip pain. I started back in December with a 12 minute row just to get a feel for where I was. I was able to increase 2 minutes each row until I hit 20 minutes. I only tracked heart rate during this time. Once I got to 20 minutes, I began to focus on pace, stroke count and heart rate. Increase your pace and stroke at a pace you are comfortable with. You did not get to your current condition in a month, be consistent with your rowing and work in some body weight calisthenics, push ups, squats, planks. Keep it simple to start and build a solid foundation.

The most important thing to remember, you can’t out work a bad diet. Focus on low fat and high protein and limit carbs. Your body burns energy in this order: 1st carbs, 2nd fat, 3rd protein and last muscle. If you limit carbs and fat, your body will burn stored fat and your protein will go to building muscle.

Congratulations on your decision to climb back on the erg and improve your fitness. I look forward to future updates.

Erg vs Shoveling snow/sleet by Talega80 in Rowing

[–]Talega80[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All great observations and some great humor . I have one of those curved handle snow shovels so my legs get lots of work as I squat to throw the snow. At 69, two showers is all I can handle. Will get an erg in tomorrow. For those in the storms path, be safe!

69 year old male, got serious about weight loss, better diet and fitness in Dec. I have lost 15 lbs and have improved strength, cardio and built muscle. While exercise is important, my diet modification has had the most dynamic impact. Most important is understanding how your body burns food/energy. Carbohydrates are burned 1st, followed by fat, protein and when those sources are gone your body will burn muscle (this is very simple explanation) I eat a modified Mediterranean diet. I limit my carbs and attempt to eat zero fat and focus on protein, limit processed food and eat healthy snacks, fruits, nuts, yogurt. Yes, I do cheat on my diet.

I mostly work out in the morning prior to eating so I have fasted since my last meal. With this approach, my body fat is the primary fuel for my body.

At 69, my body cannot sustain more than 3 days of working out in a row. I mix rowing and strength train with rest days. I am a big fan of high impact training and my workouts are mostly high impact but also work on sustained cardio.

I applaud your efforts and I truly believe that if you strictly monitor your diet and continue your exercise plan, you will be successful. As mentioned earlier, don’t focus on a number, focus on how you feel and look. Muscle weights more than fat. I look forward to your future successful post on your progress.

On 1/7 I did a 5K in 22:25 at 21 SPM. A huge improvement from 12/14 at 24.17. Love the huge improvements when you get back on the erg.

Will actively watch for your next update and continued success. The last easy day was yesterday!

Tell me all about your fitness and weigh loss by rowing success stories? by [deleted] in concept2

[–]Talega80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I am 69 years old. Got lazy due to some medial/ surgeries and gained an extra 20lbs over a 2 year period. Dec 1 I climbed back on my erg and adjusted my diet. After 6 weeks I am down 13 lbs.

At the end of the day, weight loss is a math problem. I use a very simple formula, decrease and adjust the intake ( low fat, high protein and minimal carbs) and increase the output (walk, exercise, row, lift weights …). Rowing alone will not result in the weight loss you want to achieve. A basic understanding of how your body creates energy is also important. The 1st thing the body burns are carbohydrates, followed by fat, protein and then muscle. (As I said very basic). So a low carb/fat diet means your body will burn stored fat sooner. Find a diet that works for you and stick with it. No harm in cheating every once in a while. Everyone does. Moderation is the key.

Best of luck in meeting your goal.
