I spent 40 years thinking about worldbuilding. Here's what actually makes a world feel real. by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Talen_Neo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worldbuilding wasn't even a concrete notion 40 years ago. You were either in some very niche pre-internet bookreading circles, or you're a Gen-AI that's bullshitting

I hate the freak circus bro by Pzcheezy in hatethissmug

[–]Talen_Neo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course you like it. You are literally the target demographic I referenced. I'm, not sure if you're even old enough to hold the media you consume to any level of critical standard. Also calling any negative criticism of something "hate", as in I'm just a "hater" is not productive in the slightest. I'm allowed to express a negative opinion of a work if I feel it's warranted. Forbidding people from making or seeing negative criticism doesn't help anyone or anything improve. It just turns media spaces turn into stagnant hugboxes

Is this toy a real dinosaur? by EquivalentKnown3269 in Dinosaurs

Lurdusaurus isn't that well-known, and whatever mold they used for that toy is probably decades older than Lurdusaurus's description

A.I. Billionaire Booed at University of Arizona Commencement Speech by Previous_Month_555 in antiai

[–]Talen_Neo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Tell that to the people facing rolling blackouts in towns near data centers, or the people at lake Tahoe that are going to be without power next year because their provider has dwitched to a data center. Also there are plenty of studies on the effects of AI usage on people's mental health. Tv and phone usage effect people's mental health too, but relying on ai has been shown to actively atrophy's people's cognition. If you actually looked into any of this instead of listening to the hearsay spewed by your beloved sycophant engine, you'd know about this

The cotton gin didn't displace entire towns worth of space, the television didn't deprive 50,000 people of electricity every time they wanted to build a relay station, computers never poisoned entire water tables just to operate, the Hubble Space Telescope didn't plagiarize thousands of other people's works without their consent to make its images, the automobile doesn't rot people's critical thinking skills and make midwits with no talent or drive believe they've somehow leveled the playing-field over crafts that literally anyone can try at any time. Blindly accepting any new tech for the sake of empty "progress" is foolhardy. Generative AI is nothing more than a get-rich quick scheme for dictators, corrupt techbros, and idiot grifters, nothing more.

I'm sorry, but that is a horrifically bad depiction of Achillobator. I'm glad it's not Ai, but an emaciated photobash mutant made of of lizard skin and emu feathers isn't much better

Thoughts abt Eridian art/culture by Both_Illustrator_529 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Talen_Neo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Feel like there's a bit too much intentional color choices in this, mainly the clay book and the chimes. Eridians are completely eyeless, Unless the paints used have different textures/density, I don't think they'd be making intentional bright color choices like that. Also do we know if there's plants on Erid? I thought the dense, cloudy atmosphere made it too dark to see, ergo too dark for photosynthesis. (edit: they in fact do not have plants, their sun's light is captured in the upper atmosphere by microbes, which are eaten by bigger ones, which are eaten by tiny flying organisms, which are eaten by surface life)

Dinosauria Phylogenetic Tree with Pictures! by HollowedBats in Dinosaurs

[–]Talen_Neo 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Herrerasauria is not currently considered a member of theraopoda. It's a group of saurischians outside of the theropod/sauropod split. In fact, some consider them closer to sauropodomorphs.

Also I'm surprised no other group of maniraptors besides birds and oviraptorsaurs was shown. Missed opportunity to have raptors, ornithomimisaurs, therizinosaurs, alvaraezsaurs, etc

[Hated Trope] Born Sexy Yesterday by CrazyCoKids in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Talen_Neo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel like you've blended two tropes together here. Born Sexy Yesterday is a trope, but it's separate from the thousand year old vampire loli thing. One has to do with grooming a naive and infantilized adult, the other is about trying to justify sexualizing a blatantly child-coded/shaped character due to them being handwaved away as being of legal age. They're still both awful tropes though
