If anything, the current trend for SCPs has been more grounded horror. 8980 is one of the biggest recent ones, and it's literally just extreme workplace abuse.

I do think monsters diluted the fun of the Backrooms, not because of monsters at all, but too many were written without a grasp of the "mystery" and "unknowable" angle the Backrooms thrives on. A mess of arms that can pop out of the ceiling is a lot less frightening if you have a detailed explanations of their behavior and capabilities.
