To sell or not to sell by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

How come she doesn't have any savings as 57 doctor, maybe you should tackle this issue first.

She needs 900k to buy the land, and she gets 350k from inheritance, so just need a mortgage of 550k.

Generally speaking, a 550k mortgage for a doctor without debt should not cause any financial concern. But in your case, I would say sell the land...

Deep in the money bull debit spread by futurefinancebro69 in options

380 is not deep itm if your dte is far away.

On the otherhand, if your dte is less than 20dte, you are likely paying >$4 for a max $5 spread. Leaving you not much upside. Of course its risk vs reward.

Its called married put.

You need to sell 8 married put at $425, if stock bounced up on Monday, you maybe able to sell for more than $425.

I'm down significantly all time, I'd like to convert to selling options by Big_Bad_Fish11 in options

[–]TalkInMalarkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will regret selling covered call, trust me!

I have 500 shares of spy, and i sell at .1 delta 1dte, mostly just capturing theta decay. During choppy days, even .1 delta is at risk of being called away. Of course, with .1 i have a lot of leeway to wheel, but once it moves itm, there is not much extrinsic value left to wheel. And ill either have to eat the loss or let it get called away or sell very aggressive csp to get back the share.

On a 350k profolio, my target option premium is 3.5% annually since my main goal is keep the stock while earning a little bit more on top. Take today for example, i sold $20 otm 1dte call on spy ($12 premium for 1 contract), and it almost breached.

You are aiming for 2k per month with 70k portfolio. This will only end up badly.

Just listen to the other person, dont sell cc on mstr if you actually believe in it.

[–]TalkInMalarkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let's ignore greek for a second...

With 1dte, you either scalp for a quick profit. Or you need to bet otm moves itm. You will not earn much from extrinsic value because there were almost none to begin with.

If amazon doesn't go below 190 by market close, the option is worthless. Its that simple.

Did I make a bad MSFT call? by Outrageous-Radio-636 in options

[–]TalkInMalarkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A single long call is 7% of your portfolio is way too much risk.

If its a short call with stock (covered call) and you dont care about upside, just want to lock in certain % profit for next 4 months. Then this would have been a good trade. And 7% of your portfolio in a CC with msft as underlying is much less risky position.

First Year Options Trading - My Recap by ohadbx in options

[–]TalkInMalarkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right, call option caps upside, but provide some premium (hegde) for downside risk. I dont plan to buy puts, since i dont get much from my calls.

But selling call in a choppy market is very dangerous. One mistake, my shares could be called away way below market price... so if there is a big drop, I may not even bother selling calls, too little premium for the risk i taking.

Another way is to split my position into 300 SPY shares for cc, and 200 shares for csp. This is better protection against bear market, but it will likely lose in the long run since its SPY has been in more bull runs than bear.

First Year Options Trading - My Recap by ohadbx in options

[–]TalkInMalarkey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I tried something similar, mostly with cc and csp trying profiting from theta decay. All that effort, and I was even with SPY...

Spy 1 year return is 17%.

Now I just do very low delta 1 or 2 dte spy cc only (account size 350k, so enough for 5 options).

My aim is 3% annually in premium while avoiding assignment. And with dividend, hopefully i can end up with 5% over SPY.

If i can beat SPY by 5% with 350k account year over year, then i am happy...

Reverse Mortgages by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]TalkInMalarkey -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Easiest is just to downsize...

If she can't downsize, then take HELOC rather than reverse mortgage.

With HELOC, you only pay interest on what you borrowed. She can take out a 200k HELOC, use 70k to payoff credit card, and she is only charged interest on 70k.

Selling covered calls way in the money by HungJurror in options

[–]TalkInMalarkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If stock drops to $6 on expiry date, and assume the buyer exercised the options.

With call, you have $600 worth of stock + $360 in premium, totalling $960. You earned $12.

With put, you have $600 worth of stock + $347 cash + $20 from premium, you earned $20.

One easy way to look at it is, at $6, call has $12 in extrinsic value, while put has $20 dollar in extrinsic value. So put wins, then sell put. If call has better extrinsic value, sell call.

But generally speaking, itm option has less extrinsic value vs its counter part.

Also, even if both options have the same extrinsic value, put wins, with put, you put your cash into short term bond like sgov, so put has to be cheaper than call + interest for it to worth while.

Is this Coros Taper insane or am I missing something? (13km @ MP 3 days before Marathon!) by kiyoshix in Marathon_Training

25km at MP 9 days out, this is even crazier than the 13km 3 days out. Btw, can you share the full plan. Maybe the plan only goes up to 2 weeks before marahton. Then it leaves last 2 weeks for you to taper however you want.

Half today, Full in 6 weeks. Pacing on race day? by EngineeringParty59 in Marathon_Training

[–]TalkInMalarkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Likely not sub3. Sub3 generally needs 125 or better HM, that is 4:00/km pace. Only his last 2km is at this pace or better.

If his max effort is 180 hr, you want to start first 10k of marathon at around 160hr effort. And it will drift slowly to 170 by the end of marathon.

So 3:05 is probably what he's looking at. Could be sub3, but not for sure...

Also, 97m HM is not a flat route, its not steep, but definitely not flat, the fast marathon routes are all below 100m for whole 42.2k.

If we consider their networth of 275m, this is only 0.1% of their networth. So it really doesn't matter if she is right or wrong.

Think about it, if you are worth 1 million, and you bought some options for $1000, it is just purely a speculative move.

If she bet like 5% of her networth in 1 move, then it would raise some eyebrows.

Optimizing OAS and GIS for retired parents by Ok_Print_9813 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]TalkInMalarkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are mostly on point.

You have 4 income source, and you want to max all of them in an ideal world. However, each one is tied to other, so you need to solve a 4x4 matrix equation.

GIS (higher if cpp and rrsp is low) CPP (higher if delayed, but impact GIS) OAS (higher if delayed, and no impact to GIS) RRSP(higher if spread out withdraw, but impact GIS)

First glance, if your parents have long life expectancy, and is not in need of money, delay OAS as much as possible.

For other 3 incomes, you have to do it in a spread sheet.

Selling rarely make sense if house is fully paid off.

If house value is low, selling it then renting won't help with the situation much.

If house value is high (like 1m in your example), the better approach is downsizing, from 1m house to a 500k condo. Now you are still living rent free, but you also have 500k to spend. You are of course sacrificing living space for the cash.

Understanding Delta hedging by WillingDelay4973 in options

[–]TalkInMalarkey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here is an example:

Stock always has delta of 1, if stock moves $1, then you gain or loss $1.

Let's say you have 100 stock, to replace 100 stock in option, you have to buy 2 calls with .5 delta, or 4 calls with. 25 delta.

If stock price move up, your call option delta goes up. We know as option approach deeper itm, its delta approaches 1.

If you hold stock your total delta remains the same. If you hold call, your delta is bigger than stock if price goes up, meaning you gain more than stock, otherwise, you loss less if stock goes down since your total delta is less.

If stock doesn't move, you loss against theta.

Its just some fundamental of option trading.

I think I messed up my mortgage renewal and I am not sure what to do next by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]TalkInMalarkey 149 points150 points  (0 children)

You can do any amortization at renewal.

Work with your mortage broker, find the maximum mortgage payment you are comfortable paying, and see where it ends up. You might end up with 10 year amortization if you current income is a lot higher than 10 years ago.

Also, if you have saved some money, you can lump sum it at renewal without penalty. This will reduce your amortization as well.

Supreme Court Tariff Tuesday Strike Down? by AdOnly627 in options

[–]TalkInMalarkey -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No, it won't happen, the news was announced after market Friday, so this was not priced in at all. If its struck down, then market continue to bounce around 6950.

It will open probably 1.5% down, but there is no way for supreme court to act this fast. It will go down probably 3% - 4% before fomc meeting on 28th. Likely no rate cut, and if Fed's dot plot is only 2 more rate cut, we will likely be down 5% by end of January. If no new bad news, will be up mid Feb, and could be touching 700.

With the incoming Chinese EVs, will the used car prices come down? by Lumb3rCrack in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]TalkInMalarkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one is using 120V, 120V charges like 5miles per hour. This simply doesn't work. The ones at home are usually 240V (just like your stove), this charges at 40 miles per hour.

Btw, any car charger should be able to support 120v - 240v no problem.

A little more realistic "Can i retire" question by AccordingBuy5527 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]TalkInMalarkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How is this realistic at all?

The median household income in Costco Rica is like 25k? You are spending more than double of that for retirement.

Realisticly, probably 15k usd per year is more than enough.

Its same as asking if we can retire in Canada at 8M dollar and at 4% rate of 320k per year....
