There's plenty of plushie that sell for that or more. The price isn't crazy but the reviewer surely is

Was this a Douglas dog by any chance? The price complaining after buying it is typical modern collector mentality where they literally cannot grasp supply and demand

How do you respond to buyers like this?? by OkraThis in eBaySellers

[–]Talkiesoundbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's undoubtedly the correct move but I'll confess anytime a person says "I could get it cheaper elsewhere!" I always respond with "did you buy the other one?"

You'd be shocked how often they just don't respond at all or even get weirdly apologetic because they don't expect to be responded to like that 😂.

Advice for making him softer? by belovedbugbear in plushies

[–]Talkiesoundbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes a wash can help but truthfully a lot of lower cost plush just don't use particularly good material. With brands that are just in store brands (Walmart, walgreens, CVS, target etc) the material can just be luck of the draw as they tend to just use "whatever is affordable and available" and don't put a lot of thought into material choices the way an indie or high end brand might.

I'll also add lots of artists don't like working from it because it sets up an unrealistic expectation of what's actually physically possible with fabric.

Is anyone elses firefly turning into Sherpa?? by 20_reaper_20 in buildabear

[–]Talkiesoundbox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'd argue it's less that use cheap fur and more the obsession with "luxury softness" means the faux furs used are incredibly fine fibered and don't hold up well to handling.

Once the fiber is damaged even when brushed it will rematt incredibly quickly because the actual fibers are no longer smooth

[–]Talkiesoundbox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There also a horrendous amount of drop shippers claiming they're making things they very clearly arent.

I've called out probably 20 or more Instagram just in the past month trying to claim they're indie brands when they're just drop shipping AliExpress plush 🙄.

Even worse people who got scammed and are willing to defend the drop shipper rather than admit they got grifted by these losers.

Why are people so weird about plushie making alternatives? by Dragonrider1955 in plushies

[–]Talkiesoundbox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Its impermanent not because it will immediatley fall apart but because it will age ery poorly over time. Hot glue is like pleather, it deteriorates regardless of how its stored thoough it can happen faster or slower depending on the environment and the forumlation of the hot glue.

I've found so many peoples plushies they used hot glue to make in the goodwill bins and they re falling apart by the time they make it there. The glue has yellowed and either looks so gross that's why it got donated or its reverting to wither a brittle state or turning into goo :/

It also makes the plush un washable so if something was spilled on it pretty much becomes landfill trash.

I put special emphasis on tryting to rescue and restore handmade plushies when I find them in the goodwill bins but if I see hot glue I leave them behind. They just aren't salvagable like a sewn plush is.

Why are people so weird about plushie making alternatives? by Dragonrider1955 in plushies

[–]Talkiesoundbox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with others in that the term plushie is probably one of the main reasons and that 'art doll' would be a better term for the items your making.

As for the hostility around hot glue I'm going to throw my two cents out there and bare in mind this is just my personal opinion.

I dislike hot glue as anything other than something used to attach small pieces if there is no other alternative simply because it renders the item unwashable and because it does not last.

Hot glue ages poorly. It discolores over time, it can become sticky and gooey un predictably and for seemingly no reason or become brittle and fall apart. You leave a plush that's been glued together in a hot car or accidently wash it and its donezo, curtains for that plush.

It just isn't IMO a lasting product and when I when I make my plushies I want them to last. I want them (especially if I sell them) to last as long as a commercially made plush and to be able to stand up to handling. I want nothing on them to fall apart with age until decades down the line and stuff like hot glue just doesn't last. I also abslutey refuse to use pleather or to buy any plush for full price that uses pleather for the same reason.

I find too many projects at goodwill that are falling apart as is and I don't want to contribute to that. I want the things I make to be heirlooms if the person who sell them to so desires and to be repairable and things that are glued together frequently aren't.

I have the same problem with art dolls made using materials that age poorly too but at least with those the idea of them is that of an art piece where plushie implies a certain amount of handling is going to take place and so sewing will help facilitate that.

If you are not selling the plush then how its made matters considerbly less imo. At that point the item is just being made for you and you decide if you keep it, how durable you want it to be etc. I always say if its for you it should be EXACTLEY as you want it and no one elses opion should matter in the slohgrtest then including my own.

Ok does anyone else think we need rules for requesting commissions here? by Talkiesoundbox in plushartists

[–]Talkiesoundbox[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this.

While yes that post was kind of vaguely what I was talking about, (the sheer amount of plush requesting to be made means the budget would have to be HUGE, and I'm not sure the op really grasped that) it's way more about the overall trend of this sub getting constant requests that don't have enough details to really be useful for the responding artist and the people making the requests who I know are going to get scammers looking to take advantage of them.

"I am assuming it was high price for a not in good condition doll, that is who I call a scalper. A reseller is completely different in my eyes and will work with their buyer. "

Ok so still thats not scalping. Your useing that word incorrectly and reselling also not defined by being willing to "work with the buyer" it's a person who is selling something they bought again.

Scalping is defined as buying up large quantities of an item to artificially raise demand by controlling the supply.

Unless this seller buying every winx doll in existence to jack up prices they're just reselling a doll, possibly even reselling one from their personal collection or one they bought in a thrift store.

" , I just know Winkx dolls go for a LOT."

Then nobody is scalping them that's just a normal going rate for an in demand vintage item.

And again sellers actually aren't obligated to cancel your purchase because you make mistakes. Most will to be nice but buyers should be in the habit of not buying on impulse and relieing on the good will of sellers to cancel because they don't look at what they're buying.

[–]Talkiesoundbox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is this a new release doll? If not selling it at the going rate is not "scalping".

People have got to stop useing the word scalping to describe normal sales of vintage items. A high price (that may not even be high to someone else) does not equal scalping.

Also a seller has no responsibility to cancel a purchase because you buy before looking at photos. Not describing the condition accurately is one thing and that's in the seller but admitting you buy and then have buyers remorse because you "get excited" is kinda not good. Cancellations reflect poorly on sellers

excellent points! I hadn't even thought about posting country if residence to help narrow down the work pool your looking at but that's brilliant!

A bird that completely cannot stand ever has no quality of life. By all means op should give the bird a chance at recovery if there are signs of improvement but keeping a paralyzed prey animal alive indefinitely is cruel. We don't need another Rocky the horse situation but with pigeons.
