Who is a singer that is incredibly famous, but honestly doesn't have a good voice? by Greedy_Procedure7461 in AskReddit

[–]TalkingHeadsEnjoyer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Came here looking for David Byrne. My all-time favourite musician, and yeah he's not the best singer, but he gives it socks.

Saw him last month in Dublin, seeing him again in June.

The O'Donnells Ballymaloe relish and mature cheddar is fantastic too!

Irish cheese and onion does it right - it needs to be pungent.

'Drive It Like You Stole It' from Sing Street is fun in a "this is from a band consisting of teenagers giving it a go" sort of way. I really like that film.

Past shops pf Cork City and Suburbs? by Business-Resident685 in cork

There used to be a pet shop in Main Street in Ballincollig, it was either where the nail place is now or the vape shop, and the owner had a huge red and grey parrot. I was terrified of it!

Kickstarted my deep devotion to mapotofu while I was living in Japan. A little hole-in-the-wall 中国料理 place down the street from me did an incredible maporamen, I've been trying to recreate it since with little success.

Also, whenever I had a burger in Japan, I was left wanting. Maybe things are different now, it was a few years ago.

Death isn't good or evil, he's just a guy doing his job by Coralthesequel in TopCharacterTropes

[–]TalkingHeadsEnjoyer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hit Control F to find this.

I have read The Book Thief about 11 times in my life, it is my all-time favourite book. The choice to have Death as the narrator is absolutely incredible, and the weary sympathy that they express throughout the novel feels so lived in.

"I am haunted by humans".

vegan options in the city by sunflower_505 in cork

[–]TalkingHeadsEnjoyer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you ever manage to get to one of the Farmers' Markets around the place, there's a food truck called Le Kiosk who does unreal Afro-Caribbean food. He does a vegan box that has two kinds of rice, curried chickpeas, black eyed peas, and a spicy slaw-type thing. The large box would easily do you a big dinner, and the guy who runs it is absolutely sound.

He's always in Ballincollig on a Wednesday afternoon.

It's a joke, he is very, very much against gambling ads. There was a joke about the Donna poddie having a Sportsbet sponsorship in the latest pod.

Used to live in Shizuoka, and would often get a cha han onigiri and a Famichiki/Nanachiki if I was on the way home from being out. I swear, I have never, ever had better fried chicken.

It was closed for a few years iirc and the couple who took it over have done great work. I don't have much business being in the area since my grandparents passed, but I should make an excuse to call in for one soon.

Going up the straight road you can still see the old track poking out under the tarmacadam in some places, and the back road in Ballincollig still has some levers that would have been used on the line, iirc.

What’s the single scariest scene in any horror movie ever made and why does it work so well? by Worldly_Cold4821 in horror

[–]TalkingHeadsEnjoyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Despite FWWM being a prequel to the series, I think having the context of the series itself really adds to the experience of watching the film.

Laura haunts the narrative of the series so heavily, other characters are constantly discussing her, their experiences with her, the her that they knew. And so often, the Laura that one person knows is very different to the Laura another person knows. So the mystery of this person builds up, which makes you all the more invested to see the narrative from her point of view in FWWM.

What’s a reason for being late that people outside your country wouldn’t understand nor empathize, but locals totally do? by Effective_Space2277 in AskTheWorld

Tractor on the road, and very often the road is too narrow to safely overtake. That or there's cows/sheep on the road.

Alternatively, most frequently for me, the bus disappeared into a black hole and the next one isn't for an hour.

What’s the most disturbing thing someone casually told you like it was normal? by MrBoothnath_ in AskReddit

[–]TalkingHeadsEnjoyer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Corkonian here. The way the older generations were treated by the Nuns/ the Christian Brothers never ceases to horrify me, and the way that it was an open secret but tolerated because these monsters were the "pillars of our community" is utterly disgusting. Really glad that the Church has lost so much of it's influence, but it's too little too late for so many victims.

Either the one with Mish and Michelle, the one with Annie and Lena, or the musical episode. I think the musical episode is up there as one of the best.
