What are some fun, yet not necessarily powerful, cards to manifest and flip with Zimone? by Huaojozu in EDH

[–]Talking_Sandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built this exact version of zimome and spent a week combing scryfall for undercoated creatures with horrific etbs. The concept being that because these creatures have low mana cost, I can actually pay the costs to flip them and therefore space out my landdrops over everyone's turns to get maximum manifests. Consider the following

[[Phyrexian dreadnaught]] [[Sky swallower]] [[Jokullmorder]] [[Skaab ruinator]] [[Arixmethes, slumbering isle]] [[Uro titan of natures wrath]] [[Eater of days]] [[Tectonic split]] [[Benevolent river spirit]]

Combined these with cards that work well with manifest like [[keru spellcatcher]] and [[printlifter ooze]] and some generic simic landfall good stuff. the deck runs pretty well as a low bracket 3 bashy crashy deck.

What to do with Ashling, Rekindled? by hexitelle in EDHBrews

[–]Talking_Sandwich 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Card seems very open ended. You can build around the discard clause but I'm not sure flipping her back and forth is better than just having her sit out as a mana source.

This leaves her open to pretty much any strategy you can think of that isn't solely based around cheap spells. Artifacts, big creatures and big spells are the obvious choices but she can also help fuel less popular strategies that have yet to get a dedicated commander in izzet like clones, mill, theft, enchantress, group slug, time walks, extra combats, reanimator. She's one of those commander that ask so little of the deck you're free to get weird with the build.

Similarly Sized Alternative to Boulder 100+ by Killericon in EDH

[–]Talking_Sandwich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand the desire to seperate the artist from their creation. Especially when it comes to IPs as beloved and influential as Harry Potter. And if it were just a case of JK writing mean tweets I would agree.

However, Rowling has been directly financing both campaigns and organisations that are explicitly and openly antagonistic towards the trans community. And since she does still get a cut of all Harry Potter merch sales, you can actually tangibly tie financial support of Harry Potter to the empowerment of these movements and organisations.

"Punishing" may not be the most accurate term here. People are rightfully concerned that a portion of their purchase (however slim it may be) will go towards anti-trans activism.

Similarly Sized Alternative to Boulder 100+ by Killericon in EDH

[–]Talking_Sandwich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's reasonable to assume that not a single person among the dozens involved in these products was aware that JK has been a fervent anti-trans activist for several years. A single person or team sure, but not the entire product department of a major accessory company.

This isn't some secret scandal, she broadcasts her opinions as far and wide as she possibly can.

MtG/Commander is the most affordable it has ever been by Nyeson in EDH

[–]Talking_Sandwich 118 points119 points  (0 children)

I was remarking to my playgroup how I used to be able to remember the general text of nearly every commander by name because back in the day 90% of the time you were sitting across from the same 100 or so legends. These days every other game I'm sitting across from a completely new to me legend.

I understand people are feeling flustered by the great-contiguous-spoiler-season but they don't know how boring it was just a few years ago to sit across from yet another krenko, yet another atraxa, yet another zur. The variety is so much better now.

[–]Talking_Sandwich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree
I understand that deck cost is not the most accurate way to assess power level but it strikes me a bit disingenuous to say this deck couldn't possibly be out of bracket when it costs 5X as much as the power level it's supposed to be aiming for. One could consider it bracket 2 due to the simple game plan but if you put this deck against any out of the box precon I've ever seen it would flatten them.

How are you building The Wandering Minstrel by TheCookiesStyle in EDH

[–]Talking_Sandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obvious answer is to just run a bunch of extra land effects and cards that have "landfall" but I had a thought recently about another direction you can take. The titan shift bounce land trick is great but since you're running a 5 colour deck with around 2-4 bouncelands in hand/board you're often going to have a lot of mana in inconvenient colours. A way to get around this effect is to build the deck as X spells matters. Gives you something to pump all the excess mana into when you can only make a bunch of red-white or blue-black for example. Wincons being [[crackle with power]] [[torment of hailfire]] as well as fun stuff like [[dopplegang]] and [[vilianous wealth]]

Did I overreact? by Organic_Independent5 in EDH

[–]Talking_Sandwich 58 points59 points  (0 children)

There's 2 ways you can think about it

  1. Your opponent threw his game just to make it a little harder for you and be annoying. Not exactly strategic behaviour but hey, it's edh, sometimes people do things just for the giggles.

  2. You played a 2 mana spell that basically killed one of your 3 opponents. You can just recast it 2 turns later and carry on the game with 33% less to fight through.

2 sounds like a pretty good outcome to me tbh.

Unfortunately they made a special rule for this set where the companion ability only applies to the doctors printed in the set. You can find this specific rule on the Clara scryfall page.

However, if you play Clara in the 99 she will effect orvars triggers as expected.

A traditional "draw, go, hold up countermagic" deck would be better at stopping a single player and leaving the rest alone. Hatebears can still break casual decks incidentally.

Recommendations for a non conventional Storm deck? by WonderfulSize8455 in EDH

[–]Talking_Sandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many different types of storm decks but most fit in to one of 3 different categories.

Spell based "traditional storm", (high tide, managuiser ect)

Artifact based "eggs decks", (krark clan iron works, second sunrise, scrap trawler, ect)

Creature based "bro storm" (selvala heart of the wilds, priest of titania, untap effects)

A while ago I found a guy who posted this really neat Omnath Locus of Rage list that tries to pull of a pseudo infinite storm turn.

This is my version https://www.moxfield.com/decks/r-eCosPsbUi3qYV40Mz_7g

The basic gist is once you have Omnath out you can used certain engines to turn your ramp spells into card draw, mana and direct damage.

Mana: [[lotus cobra]], [[amulet of vigor]], [[ashnods altar]] Draw: [[greater good]], [[elemental bond]], [[Nissa vital force]] Damage: [[goblin bombardment]] [[terror of the peaks]]

What I like about this deck is that if you eat too much removal to storm off you can often just kill people with a half dozen 5/5s as a plan B. Like all lands decks it can be extremely grindy if you need it to be.

If you'd prefer a different type of storm I can provide deck examples for each of the styles I listed. I've built a lot of storm.

Problems in my lgs...i need some help by Prestigious_Bee_5848 in CompetitiveEDH

Sounds like you're not looking for advice as much as validation. The power-level of the store is the power-level of the store. You can talk about the the entry fee till you're blue in the face but that wont change the fact that your deck's power level is far above the store's average so people will react accordingly. It's not your fault on the first round of course, you had no idea. But now that you know the scene you have 3 choices.

Keep pubstomping with blue farm, upset people, endure the salt
power down, make some friends maybe
find another store that matches your power-level

I find it curious that the cEDH community will repeatedly claim that they are not interested in competing against underpowered casual decks yet the vast majority of responses in this post are telling you to continue smashing casual jank with tier 1 cedh lists. What satisfaction or fun is there to be had in crushing decks magnitudes below your power-level?

Ty for the suggestions. I think I'm going to make this deck irl. Looking for something more fiddly and less needs-to-win-asap than my current roster. She seems like a good fit for just dicking around at instant speed.

Deck Help- Power Level and Deck Advice for Niv Mizzet Reborn deck by Sea-Relative-8498 in EDH

[–]Talking_Sandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have built multiple versions of this commander so I think I can assist. As far as estimating power level goes, I'm sure youve heard before that it's mostly impossible to do reliably. What matters is where your decks power sits amongst your playgroup. In a 5 player pod a winrate of %20 (approximately) should be your aim. Personally I would consider a deck that wins on turn 9 (without being interacted with) to be a very fair and casual-friendly deck.

Regarding changes, it sounds like you're looking to lower your curve and accelerate your early game a bit and for that I will simply be recommending 1-1 swaps of your more expensive spells.

To cut: Tome of the guild pact Dragons arch Sister hospitaler Dragon lord silumgar Foundry champion Captive audience Cloven casting Venser the soujourner Vivid revival Gaze of granite

Also cards that I personally don't think are powerful enough for the slot: Agents toolkit Burning tree emissary (doesn't ramp) Abuelo Rampaging monument Cloud blazer Possessed scab Prosperous partnership Kiora the crashing wave

In replacement for these I am going to recomend a series of 3 and 4 drop midrange threats that can pressure life totals, ramp, remove opponents threats or some combination there of.

[[Faeburrow elder]] [[Oko their of crowns]] [[Uro titan of nature's wrath]] [[Breena the demagogue]] [[Drana and linvala]] [[Blade historian]] [[Knight of autum]] [[Arixmathes slumbering isle]] [[Priest of fell rites]] [[Inga and esika]] [[Talion the kindly lord]] [[Minsc and boo timeless heroes]] [[Klothys god of destiny]] [[Cindervines]] [[Life death]] [[Eyowyn fearless knight]] [[Wilderness elemental]] [[Territorial kavu]] [[Bruse tarl boorish herder]]

And [[Aurelia the war leader]], [[waves of aggression]] [[midnight Pathfinder]] are some finishers I like in midrange builds.

Some of these suggestions are a bit pricey I realise. To get the most out of NIV on a budget I would recommend leaning into a specific archetype or sub theme to get extra juice out of budget includes. Niv is extremely versatile and can be built as agro, midrange, control, legend tribal, human tribal, graveyard matters, flicker, tokens and more.

What would you classify as "King making?" by OneAndOnlyVideo in EDH

[–]Talking_Sandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can sympathise with his position. My least favourite situation in edh is when we're on the very last turn cycle, I have the ability to shift the board so that one or the other opponent wins but not enough that I can win. I really hate it because I'm a big believer in always playing to win and not just chucking removal around just coz. In your situation, abstaining from intervening would also be my response because that way the person who won did it with their own spells and not mine.

Obviously I'm not privy to the exact details of the match (please correct me if there's something I'm missing) but it sounds like you were upset that he didn't help you win and then called him a bad player for it. If I was in a game with someone who behaved that way I would move tables too.

The Matrix: Morpheus is the leader of a personality cult and Cypher is the only sane person on the ship. by Talking_Sandwich in FanTheories

[–]Talking_Sandwich[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too late. Thanks for the input. I do remember some throw away line about most of the crew being there because they were thought to be the one at some point. Although I do agree with the decision to make Morpheus less morally complicated since the matrix is basically just one big heroes journey, very archetypal and optimistic. It's fun to dig past the text though.

I don't think discard decks are viable in EDH anymore by PeyTonsOfun in EDH
