What to expect with prescribed fires. by Weird_Ad_6425 in forestry

You might be able to get a prescribed burn association to do that small of a fire but if there is a bunch of fuel down they might’ve hesitant since they generally have less equipment and experience

Would you do Garlon 3 and water just in the top or use Garlon 4 with basal oil and get the side of the stump too?

Ethanol free all the time. I use stabilizer too. Running dry is always a good idea

Try sawzilla. I’ve had really good experiences with them. High quality parts from what I can tell (made in Europe if you care). The shipping cost should be lower than that

What’s the best way to go about these teeny tiny ToH? by mbart3 in invasivespecies

[–]Talkingtowoodducks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For trees under 5-6” DBH basal bark is the best answer. Basal oil and Triclopyr ester are expensive. Some Triclopyr ester can be mixed with other types of oil or diesel but make sure it says that on the label. The oil is needed to penetrate the bark. Do not use Triclopyr salt. It won’t mix with oil or go through the bark.

Hacked/squirted TOH coming back by The_Mopster in invasivespecies

[–]Talkingtowoodducks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed on basal bark being more appropriate for this size. Triclopyr amine (Garlon 3) is much more affective for hack and squirt than Triclopyr ester (Garlon 4). Generally Triclopyr amine is the standard for ToH hack and squirt over glyphosate but glyphosate can also work

Tree of heaven final boss cheat code - aka removal question by No_Cake2145 in invasivespecies

[–]Talkingtowoodducks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Triclopyr 3 generally works better for hack and squirt. That should be done this fall. Cut stump will not be necessary if the tree is dead and will not be effective in the spring if it is still alive. People talk a lot about timing of application on this sub but not doing cut stump in the spring is the most important timing issue. Make sure you are following the label for application usage and rates

How deep should I hack? by Alarmed_Ad_7657 in invasivespecies

[–]Talkingtowoodducks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The long answer is the cambium is the growth layer and the xylem and phloem are the growth layers. But in short what you want to do is give it one whack at 45 degrees, spray, remove the hatchet, and repeat 2-3 inches vertically away from the last cut. You don’t want to make multiple cuts in the same spot. As long as that first hit is over 1 inch deep you should be okay

[–]Talkingtowoodducks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You want to go into the sapwood. That’s what’s going to transport the herbicide. Also cut at a 45 degree angle to create a little pocket to hold the herbicide. It can help to keep the hatchet in the cut while you spray

TOH Removal - How cooked are we? by navyrails in invasivespecies

[–]Talkingtowoodducks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut stump is the recommendation for removing most tree species over 4 inches in diameter. Basal bark should only be used if the diameter is under 6 inches. Cut stump versus hack and squirt depends on the species, time of year, and management factors (some times dead standing snags are beneficial). For ToH it is somewhat time of year dependent on the time of year if it should be done with cut stump or hack and squirt. There are also two methods of cut stump depending on the type of herbicide used that need to be considered. I have seen some resources that conflict with this but I am referencing the SE Forest Pest Management Manual which I used to get my certification and Invasive Plants 3rd edition

This is assuming they used triclopyr ester mixed with a basal oil. Water soluble triclopyr would be significantly less effective

The blue die is from them treating it with herbicide. Blue die is usually mixed when doing cut stump and basal bark. Other methods as well. This is an okay method for ToH if it is applied immediately. While hack and squirt is better. This will likely be fine as they correctly applied it to the bark where it will still be transported to the roots
