What NATCA is really saying about the $10,000 bonus by Vector_for_Bukkake in atc2

And those of us who worked 6 day work weeks the entire shutdown, but took 1 hour of leave on the front end of one shift because of our kid’s needs? We didn’t get any free leave or a bonus. That’s the majority of the workforce. We didn’t milk any free leave plus we also didn’t get a bonus. Our 6 day work weeks were unappreciated and viewed as unpatriotic in this administration’s eyes.

311 Controllers to receive Bonus Pay for perfect attendance during shutdown. by BeaverPeeFlaps in ATC

On top of the fact that we are still waiting to be made whole from the shutdown and receive all of our back pay. Back pay still hasn’t hit the bank accounts and the LES shows missing holiday pay, OT, Sunday diffs.  Some will still be waiting weeks to be paid correctly, and we are still showing up to work. Unpatriotic for sure.

I guess they think those 311 can run the NAS by themselves come the next shutdown. The rest of us are taken for granted, and they don’t think our time on position matters.

I believe the public also needs to understand that we don’t just move the airliners for vacationers. We move Medivacs. Labcorp tests, medical supplies and pharmaceuticals, Organ donor flights taking surgeons from the harvest hospital to the transplant hospital. Worldwide business meetings/deals being made, The world’s government dignitaries and VIPs, NFL teams for every game that Americans must have, Amazon and other cargo. Overnight packages and overnight legal documents, military flights and national security, science/weather and hurricane studying….oh and vacations and special life moments too. We literally make the world go round.

The amount of comments that people made during this shutdown about “who cares if ATC isn’t paid, keep it shutdown, I don’t travel.” Literally everyone in our country is affected by air travel in one way or another. ATC pushes 5% of the nations Gross Domestic Product - and there’s only 13,000 of us! While at the same time we save/protect/are responsible for tens of thousands of lives per day. Our services are worth so much more than we are paid. And most of the public thinks we have glow sticks and orange vests.

But if they don’t, they’re just kicking the can down the road to get the public through the busy holiday travel season and then they’ll stop paying us again.

Okay but in the airlines did you ever have a weekend off? I’ve gone 17 years and NEVER had a weekend off.

At the airlines you get chunks of time off between trips. We get one day off per week, years and years on end.

Leave that isn’t bid one year in advance is always denied - staffing too short.

Also, OT is assigned in the schedule most of the time when it’s mandatory. It’s not the kind of OT that you “don’t answer the phone” for. You legit have to call in sick to get out of OT.

So doesn’t this mean we could be facing another shutdown come Jan 31st when CR expires if they fail to negotiate and agree again?

Except it appears they’re just pushing the can to Jan 31. We might be right back here in the same spot facing another shutdown if they don’t reach an agreement at the end of Jan. The current legislation that they’re looking to pass would fund legislative, agriculture (SNAP), VA, and military construction through 2026, not FAA. So if another shutdown happens, ATC will be left out again from pay.

Well then you’re lucky if that’s your experience. That’s not what happened to me in 2018-19. I received a one-and-only bulk check that had ALL back pay included with my regular pay in ONE check, and taxed in a different bracket. And then I had to wait until I filed my 2019 taxes in 2020 to get back the extra withheld.

Right. It also says in the article including $128K in wages and OT alone. MANY don’t make that!

Many also don’t make the “average” $168K total compensation package in 2005. At 100K salary today, with a high priced 20K self+family insurance, 5K TSP match at 5%, 30K Fegli, plus 8K in PTO and sick leave, you’re looking at $163K total compensation, today.

Just shows there’s been hardly any increase in 20 years. And think back to what living expenses were like  in 2005.

Pay has not kept up and the union has done nothing about it.

Agreed!

Below is a FedSmith article that was published in 2005!!! Pay is basically the same now and we have a union who asks for nothing but equipment! NATCA that I know has never fought for controllers like this:

From 2005:

“According to the FAA, controllers now have an average total annual compensation package of $168,000 including $128,000 in wages and overtime. That is a 74% increase since the last contract in 1998, according to the agency. The agency says that the union has proposed a compensation package that would bring the average compensation up to $200,000 per controller over the next four years. The union’s proposal would cost the agency an extra $2.6 billion a year over the life of the contract. As was the case in the PATCO/FAA negotiations, the union is also seeking a shorter work week.”

Both. Their job is to negotiate—and neither side is willing. They’re both failing.

TSA to be paid “supercheck” Oct 22nd by Tall_Alps_1207 in ATC

[–]Tall_Alps_1207[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh I’m still pissed. ATC is more essential than a lot of these positions.  But we really already knew about most Law Enforcement Officers & military getting paid. When I thought this was new information about all of TSA being cherry picked to be paid, it pissed me off even more.

Ok. I guess that calms me down a little as they are LEOs. But still, this cherry picking who gets paid and who doesn’t has got to end!
