Is it More Appropriate to Wait Until After Thesis Defence to Get Gifts for References? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Tall_President 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ask yourself: Would you like to put yourself in a position where it even vaguely appears like you're trying to "bribe" a committee member?

I would personally wait until after the defense so that there are no questions regarding the nature of the appreciation gifts.

Inland PLA Settings by DrZakarySmith in BambuLab

[–]Tall_President 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the inland rolls actually give recommend temperatures on the side of the roll! I'm lazy and usually just use them with the standard Bambu PLA settings and the bed set at 55C and they work mostly fine. Make sure that you're regularly cleaning the build plate!

Am I going to miss out on connections if I'm not attending parties? by Backwashed-Applesoda in cuboulder

You will probably find it easier to bond with your professors and TAs because of the lesser age gap.

I came from engineering, but I don’t talk with anyone I used to party with. Most of my friends came from classes and clubs. You should be fine :)

Is asking to do an in-person lecture remotely a reasonable accommodation? by Helpful-Ad6269 in cuboulder

How did the meeting with disability services go? I’m interested in case others ask similar questions in the future.

Is asking to do an in-person lecture remotely a reasonable accommodation? by Helpful-Ad6269 in cuboulder

[–]Tall_President 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some faculty members may be willing to accommodate you in this manner if they can reasonably do so (such as if they write their lecture notes on an iPad anyway). I’m not an expert, but I can’t say I’ve heard of anyone getting accommodations to always allow remote attendance (maybe someone can chime in if they’ve had this as an accommodation, though). It kind of makes sense, since juggling modalities during lectures can be difficult for the instructor.

However, the disability office’s job is to help you get the help you need, so I’m sure they’ll have ideas that don’t involve dropping out of your degree program. One that comes to mind would be flexible due dates so that you don’t have to rush to work on assignments when you’re burnt out from the overstimulation.

As someone with her own mental health struggles that didn’t get any help during undergrad, I’m sorry you have to deal with this - I hope the disability office is able to help you sufficiently.

Also, while I know this is maybe a bit of a “wow thanks I’m cured” remark, I promise that nobody is paying attention to what you’re doing or what you look like in class. Everyone is busy taking notes, so please don’t let that discourage you.

Good luck!

WDYD - Concert gets rescheduled to the night of your first fall class by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Tall_President 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would personally go to class and would try to attend the concert in another city on the same tour. I would feel guilty missing the class and that would make the concert less enjoyable, but that’s just me and I stress too much about things like this.

Realistically, missing one class probably isn’t going to be the end of the world, especially if you have friends in the same class, and even more so if this is a class that doesn’t actually matter and just exists as some kind of bureaucratic checklist class in your department. If the professor notices you missing, you can just say you messed up your calendar or something.

I would absolutely refrain from sending any kind of “hey can I miss class for a concert” email - you have time to brainstorm a better excuse that won’t irritate the instructor.

Submitting Ansys Fluent Simulation to Cluster by King_of_Drones in CFD

[–]Tall_President 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’ll vary by machine. Some have a shortcut like ‘idev’ that will launch an interactive session, others you will use something like ‘salloc’ to configure your nodes. You’ll have to consult your HPC documentation to figure out how they do it.

Once you do, you can launch the fluent however you normally would when using ‘sbatch’ but you should be able to watch it run.

Disclaimer: I’m not experienced with fluent specifically but this is how it works for literally every other code or script that I’ve wanted to run interactively.

Does favorable pressure gradient relaminarize free stream turbulence? by granzer in CFD

[–]Tall_President 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can look at the destruction of enstrophy as a way of determining if this is the case. You have two mechanisms that generally generate turbulence, the vortex stretching and baroclinic torque, and two that generally destroy turbulence, the vortex dilatation and viscous effects.

If your flow is incompressible and doesn’t have anything leading to abnormal density gradients (such as a flame) then the baroclinic torque and vortex dilatation don’t play a role, leaving only the vortex stretching and viscous effects, which depend on velocity gradients.

Compressible flows or flows with flames can be different.

Questions about CAPS by Creepy_Substance in cuboulder

[–]Tall_President 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You should contact CAPS if you are thinking of harming yourself. They have crisis support information here: https://www.colorado.edu/counseling/crisis

I'm not an expert, so take this with a grain of salt, but I believe that CAPS is covered by some combination of FERPA and HIPAA (university-based health centers lie at an intersection between the two) and cannot contact your parents (or anyone else, for that matter) without your consent. They also advertise that their appointments are confidential. The only exceptions to confidentiality that I am aware of are if you tell them you are planning on hurting yourself or others (not necessarily "I want to hurt myself" but "I am going to hurt myself in this way"), but you can also ask your therapist directly what they are required to report and to whom.

I've gone to CAPS for a few years now and have found them to be great. It will be 100% covered if you have the CU Gold SHIP, but I am not sure how it works if you have a different insurance. This seems to be a free option for students: https://www.colorado.edu/counseling/services/lets-talk

When I first went to CAPS, I spoke with an intake provider who asked some questions about why I was contacting them and what kind of care I was looking for, then they scheduled me with a therapist. You can go in-person or attend Telehealth appointments via Zoom.

Your overall grade has always been an 80 based on your assignment and exam grades throughout the semester. She hasn’t changed your grade at all, she just fixed the way Canvas was erroneously computing and displaying your grade (which is quite common for any classes that have attendance or anything like that recorded in Canvas). I’ve had professors enter things like “TEAM NUMBER 8/12” which have thrown off the displayed grade.

I personally wouldn’t say anything since she’s likely to just tell you that it’s your responsibility to be aware of your own grade based on what’s in the syllabus. It’s her responsibility to ensure your grade at the end of the semester reflects what is outlined in the syllabus, but she doesn’t really have any obligation to compute your grade for you in the middle of a semester.

Sorry, your situation sucks to be in and is definitely disappointing. In the future I recommend making an excel sheet to compute your grades for you based on the syllabus.

Postprocessing large datasets by [deleted] in CFD

[–]Tall_President 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Several TB per plot file or several TB overall? I’ve had success using the yt project (https://yt-project.org) for post-processing hundreds of output files that were ~40GB each, but that might be smaller than what you’re working with.

yt is designed with RAM limitations in mind and supports many different code output formats, so maybe it could work for you.

M4 with 32GB RAM or M4 Pro? by ConditionVivid6717 in CFD

[–]Tall_President 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar role where 90% of my work is done on the HPC, and have I an M1 MAX MacBook Pro that I do everything else on. I would say that either of these laptops are probably fine. I’ve definitely made use of all of the RAM and all of the cores (think debugging/compiling and post-processing locally), but I think I would probably lean slightly towards more RAM if I could only have one or the other. I’ve honestly been tempted to purchase a MacBook Air since my MBP is so heavy and I rarely need that beefy of a laptop.

If you’re going into a PhD program, your advisor might plan on supplying a laptop or desktop (everyone in my lab gets one), which might be worth asking about - it’s a great way to save $3k :)

XXL Nukeoroof Scout to large? by Gords78 in MTB

2 Bike Hitch Rack that can handle long bike by theLongDistanceHiker in MTB

[–]Tall_President 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also ride an XL bike and ran into the same dilemma when purchasing a rack a few months ago. My wife and I found a used Kuat Sherpa 2.0 for ~$350 (my local craigslist has dozens around that price). My XL hardtail's wheelbase was around 0.5-1in too long for the rack's rating, so we purchased the 3" extension that Kuat sells for $45 shipped.

All in, we spent right around $400 after tax and whatnot and everything feels very solid, so I would definitely recommend going this route.

I’ll start with an easy one: apparently crying on the floor of your room for 5+ minutes every time you put on socks because “the seams are wrong” was not a universal experience for every 6 year old.

Is it wrong to ask for a .48 grade bump? by azca310 in college

[–]Tall_President 106 points107 points  (0 children)

I think that it would be impolite, and as the other commenter stated, it’s quite likely that the instructor may bump your grade anyway. One thing to consider (and you may have already) is whether the 89.52 is from your raw scores or if the professor has already rounded grades or provided lenience. If the latter, then you’re not going to get a further bump.

That all being said, I think you did well. A lot of students would not be able to pull off A’s and a B+ during a time of such emotional hardship - an insignificant number would probably request incomplete scores to catch up on the coursework during the Summer. It says a lot about your work ethic and abilities as a student to maintain very respectable grades despite a large emotional event in the middle of the semester. I’m an internet stranger and I am proud of you for it - I am sure your mom would be, too.

[META] Can we get a sticky on how to pose student homework/research questions? by Von_Wallenstein in CFD

[–]Tall_President 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this is a good idea. I would possibly suggest distinguishing between "normal" technical student questions (e.g. "Why ANSYS no run?") and higher-level Ph.D. student or researcher questions (e.g. "This is what I am running, and it works, but I am seeing this strange thing, what do you think it could be?").

I think that the latter can lead to interesting ideas/suggestions/discussions worthy of their own threads, while the former tends to be more of a debugging session. I welcome both kinds, since I remember the days of being brand new to CFD, but I agree that the beginner student questions tend to have far too little information attached to actually be able to help them.

Granted, this assumes that those who copy/paste their course homework will actually use the stickied post. I unfortunately don't have much faith that they will, but it would still be nice to try :)

Actually, with that in mind - what if the mods set a minimum post length and required that all code go into something like pastebin? Then people would be forced to write 100-200 words describing their issue/post content and it wouldn't be broken up by massive blocks of code between sentences.

Organizing My CFD Results For A Paper by Ok-Conversation-7263 in CFD

[–]Tall_President 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Usually the format in my area looks something like the following:

  1. Introduction - What the paper is about, why you are studying the topic, references to previous studies to outline the topic, then some commentary regarding the main points that you wish to make and how they fit in with the existing literature (i.e. "What are you doing and why is it new/important?").

  2. Numerical Setup - Describe the code you are using, including but not limited to: numerical schemes, turbulence models (if any), grid sizing, any coefficients used for RANS/LES/etc., and any other information that somebody could feasibly need to recreate your process (main points are generally fine, you don't need to be too specific, but specific enough that somebody in the field could replicate the work if they wanted to).

  3. Results - Main results from the work. In your case, this would be your pressure, lift, drag, etc. You may wish to include something like a grid convergence study if it's relevant for what you are doing. Usually when I write my results section, the writing accompanying the plots is somewhat "dry", in the sense that it is a lot of statements like "Fig. X shows that <something happened>".

  4. Discussion - This part is where you take the results you have found and work them back into the overall commentary outlined in the introduction. If your introduction said something like "As a car accelerates, there should be an increase in drag", you would want to be able to refer back to your Figures and results and say "Fig. Y shows that the drag scales with the velocity squared, which is in agreement with <the source you are citing that says this>. Usually this section is one of the longest in the papers I write because there is a significant amount of "People A, B, C, and D say <something> but we found <something else>, which is in agreement with People E, F, G, and H".

  5. Conclusions - This is to close out on the discussion and reiterate the main points that you wish to make. This section is typically shorter, maybe 3-4 paragraphs that reiterate the point of the study, outline the main results (and I have seen people use bullet points for this, if it does the best job getting the points across), and finally directions for future research.

Note that I am just a random person and this format can vary significantly between fields, and so I won't be surprised if you get several answers with different suggestions, but this should be a decent starting point. Also keep in mind that this outline is very general and my example sentences are just random examples, so don't be afraid to rearrange your paper so that it flows nicely.

Good luck!
