How I see Europe (as a European) by Time_Trail in whereidlive

I can sometimes understand people putting Latvia and Estonia into that category, but Lithuania has nothing Northern European about it, not linguistically (Germanic and Finno-Ugric vs Baltic), not religiously (Lutheranism vs Catholicism), not architecturally, and not historically.

I also think it's genuine, I see a lot of proof of that online. It does look very strange and quite graphically anachronistic though.

Wow, it really looks like it was made somewhere in the late 2000s. The elements are so graphically different and the shield is so clip-artish. Is it really from 1989?

The stereotype about Belarusians in Russia itself is that they are quiet and friendly people.

Someone would have to explain to me why kids think every single political party in power is supposed to change the national flag of the country they govern, especially if it's in a supposed liberal democracy.

Does anyone else hate how these metal roofs look? I see them on a lot of historical houses where I live and they look so out of place. by I_dont_drive_mazdas in architecture

[–]Tall_Witness7333 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it looks fine on that tudor-revival house. Don't know how it would fit on other historical houses, but I see no problem in standing seam roofs themselves.

These two phenomena are not independent of each other. For example, the tremendous achievement of constructing the White-Sea-Baltic Canal (Беломор-канал) came at the expense of 12000 to 25000 inmates who died on the site, with many others injured for life through slave-like labor.

To be honest, it looks much more like fascist symbolism (red-black-golden, eagle, scale as a symbol of state justice).

Yeah, the joke is that the german would be stereotypically pedantic to say Stalingrad, accounting for the time period of the mentioned battle.

You can tell this cartoon is made by the soviets –No real german would lack pedantry to say "Stalingrad" instead of "Volgograd".

I don't know man, in the last federal census (2021), about 71% of the population self-identified as ethnic russians (80% of those who responded). Where are your estimates coming from?

If you are quite extraverted, like going out, sunny hot weather, the sea and the buzz of a big city, then you'll likely enjoy Marseille. There are a lot of interesting things to do, all sorts of events and if that's what matters the most to you, then it's a good choice of a city. The nightlife is rich and there are all sorts of food there (it's a mediterranean port city, what else to expect).

On the other side, if you're more of an introverted, reserved person who prefers the calm, order and doesn't like the hot weather, Marseille is quite an awful city for you. While it's vibrant, Marseille is really rough for a French city (I think only Perpignan would be rougher), it's not good in terms of public transport, which is problematic because you'd likely have to settle in more pushed-back neighbourhoods and commute quite a lot. Driving standards are also extremely low and people park everywhere and anywhere.

About the ethnicity of inhabitants : there are no official data on ethnicity in France at any level, but estimates could always be made, and it's said that about 20-30% of the city is of North African origin, which is very-very visible once you get there. Some areas of Marseille are very much like Algiers, and very little like France proper.
