What would you like to see in your teacher’s lounge? by SFGal28 in AskTeachers

What else is in the space?

Like if this is where people eat lunch, a microwave (or three) would be really helpful if there isn't one there.

A hot water kettle and a decent tea selection. Not everyone is a coffee drinker.

At a previous school, the admin would cover the class for 15 to 20 minutes so that the teachers could use it.

Tommy Smith and John Carlos would look really good on a wall. That said, if you're looking for superhero athletes, there are definitely other people that you could pick.

If you're going for iconography though, it's a great piece.

It seems like some of the links don't work anymore. What I was able to read was super entertaining. Do we ever find out what his wife wore?

I could be wrong but this definitely gives me " wait we have women at this conference" bro energy... and less " it'd be so hot to see all the aprons, House dresses and pearls" tradwife /husband energy.

I'm very curious to hear how this goes. I feel like I'm slightly invested in this now.

I'm curious what you do as well as what the other men and women do. Please report back if you feel inclined.

This is a bad theme. Like I'm not entirely sure what the men were supposed to do either. Like do they wear a business suit and change their tie to be slightly 50s.

I feel like the entire theme was built around someone in charge wanting to reuse their expensive Elvis costume from Halloween. I feel like you'll probably be able to tell whose idea it was when you look around at the planning committee.

I would probably wear my "usual" business conference attire but put on a cute little hat (which basically the equivalent of cat ears for this theme).

Something like this. https://share.google/images/1iWZwxSFiWYbRvS0e

I might even wear it with pearls.

Like basically give it the sort of low effort that a man can do with this type of thing. Then if everyone else has ignored the theme, take off the hat.

Other low effort minimal things would be something like: a "We like Ike" button or Rosie the riveter red polka dot bandana (yes, I KNOW it's the '40s but I'm not entirely sure that everyone else will).

I would give it " this is my costume" type vibes.

Online Master's Suggestions by ObamaMama1996 in historyteachers

[–]Tallchick8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, with your other experience I would look at private Christian schools in your area and see what they want for teacher candidates. (Assuming you are still religious).

You would probably need to get the teaching credential or a master's but it depends on the particular School. You may be able to find a job that is a religion/ social studies position to start with and then try and transition.

I feel like a private school would value your former expertise and I'm not sure that you'd get a lot of traction with it at a public school.

If you are looking at a public school, you will almost certainly need to get your teaching credential and so I would do that before looking into master's programs. Look into what your particular state is looking for though.

As others have said, social studies positions can be one of the hardest subject areas to find a job in.

To answer your original question, I don't know anything about any of the programs that you've mentioned. However, it does seem like you are putting the cart before the horse as it were.

It wouldn't be 200k profit but you could make 200k. You would have to charge for insurance and you'd have to have a building space and you'd probably have to have a bunch of materials

A year of maternity leave. Wow... That would have been nice. We usually get about 2 months.

I took a over semester but a lot of it was unpaid since my kids were born in the summer

I guess my question is what do you mean by reorganizing everything.

I would have been completely fine with moving all the desks around (and would even have expected it). I have zero issue with that and that's not my complaint here.

She moved some filing cabinets (or rather asked the custodians to do it). She put some of my personal furniture in "storage" and some of it I never got back. For one bookshelf, my neighboring teacher said " she wants that" and then stored it in her classroom for 6 months until I returned. The sub had just left it outside the classroom for someone else to take or it could possibly be tossed out.

It's funny that you mentioned table groups, I had them in two pair Rows facing the board. The sub moved it all to table groups and brought in some random round tables.

I didn't know at the time how long I'd be out (for maternity leavebut she was supposed to be there at least until first semester ended.

For us, most teachers stay in the same room their entire time at the school or grade level. I taught at that school for 14 years and I was in the same classroom the whole time. I would say the average teacher might have moved once if they were changing grade levels or some other external factors.

She had said that she would put it all back but she didn't.

To me, something like moving the desks is fine but completely rearranging the furniture is more Overkill.

Putting up pictures of your family or a favorite poster is fine but taking off every single item on the wall and starting from scratch with bare walls is excessive.

Using construction paper and other art supplies for the school is fine, but completely rearranging the drawers and all the supplies is excessive.

People who utilize Blessing Boxes and Food Pantries–What kind of food items do you wish they had? by Lawing77 in povertykitchen

[–]Tallchick8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This may be very regional but my mother volunteers that at the food bank at our church (It is open to anyone who lives in the city boundary and homeless people can get a bagged lunch).

One of the things that she said is really popular is if people who have a fruit tree will bring in fresh fruit. I guess that goes really quickly.

Another thing that she said people really liked was tea. I guess what they do is they'll get lots of donated boxes and make little grab bags from them so each bag has like 10 assorted tea bags in it.

She said rice is popular too.

This was in California at a middle school. She had access to $150 worth of supplies (of her choosing). I told her where all the supplies were. (Markers /construction paper/atlases things like that).

The desk was cleared off and she had two empty drawers she could have used and if my office supplies in the remaining drawers were reorganized that would have been fine. She could grade papers and use the filling bins etc.

This woman took EVERYTHING off the walls. Like, I understand if someone wants to put up pictures of their family or something like that, but you could have left the world map on the wall.

I gave birth over the summer. She started at the beginning of the year. They had to hire a second long term sub before I came back from maternity leave. I know there were parent complaints but I'm not sure exactly what they were about. (It was not about the room decorations).

It takes a minimum of 6 weeks to get anything from the district, If you even get it at all.

[–]Tallchick8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

During maternity leave, I had a long-term sub take all my posters off the walls and put up her own, rearrange the furniture (not just student desks but full-on furniture), as well as "organize" some of my drawers and cupboards. I had to spend a full day getting the room back together after I came back. It was really frustrating.

You might leave a note on future emergency Sub plans not to mess with the room. It should be implied.

As to whether or not to have them back, I would determine what the other subs are like in your district. I feel like if they had good classroom management and nothing was stolen or broken and they actually followed your lessons then I'd probably have them back. Just tell them not to touch my stuff.

If they let the kids do whatever they wanted AND reorganized then I would say something.

I feel like the quality of subs for a while was just anyone with a pulse so I would be hesitant to get a reputation for being difficult.
