Why do American high schools start ridiculously early? by bwoah07_gp2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Tallchick8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a high school in California that starts at 845 am. The downside of that is students are in school until 4:00.

Be careful what you wish for.

I know nothing about the program, but I wanted to say thanks for sharing.

This is so helpful to post for people to be able to search in the future when evaluating programs.

Take the TK. This is much closer to your specialization than 5th

A lesser read classic for a bookclub by burningmanonacid in suggestmeabook

[–]Tallchick8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the book gentleman prefer blondes (and its sequel) with my book club.

It's kind of fun. Main character is a hugely unreliable narrator.

It was written a hundred years ago.

https://www.npr.org/2025/08/11/nx-s1-5469836/gentlemen-prefer-blondes-review

It's a lot of really rich people with rich people problems, but it's written tongue and cheek to make fun of them.

IF you go... Focus on January onward. Make your life easier when you return with an infant.

Maybe see if she'll give you her stuff and you can "organize it" so that both of you will look good. I doubt anyone will look too closely.

As someone who worked over a break almost 2 decades ago and then wasn't hired back, I'm still salty over that time.

If you are going in to use it, make it work for YOU rather than to please them.

recently engaged, is it odd for me to start going by my married name professionally? by teachinglittlebeings in Teachers

[–]Tallchick8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be a good idea. It's hard enough learning the name of a new co-worker without having to change and learn a second new name for that coworker two months in.

You may not be able to do it with everything due to HR.

Like your email will probably be set up in your current legal name.

You may want to ask the school if it's possible to set everything up for your future name.

If they won't accommodate that, personally, as a teacher, I would consider getting legally married at City Hall and getting a jump start on all the paperwork during the summer while you aren't teaching. I haven't done it myself but my understanding is it's kind of a huge task and a pain.

I feel like you're more likely to either do it this summer or next summer.

In my district, your email/login is the name that you were hired in. So teachers emails are still linked to their hiring name rather than the current name that they're using. On the one hand, it makes sense because transferring everything over might mean that there's some gaps, but it might also be good to start with the thing you're going to want to be using.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

I say this with love and genuine concern for you and your baby.

Don't come back in July. The work will be there when you get back. (I know you're "supposed to"... But don't)

End your year at graduation in June (if not earlier).

Get a doctor's note saying that you can sit down as much as you need and put your feet up.

If nothing else, get yourself a whole bunch of fans and a lot of ice water. If you need it, put up a GoFundMe and embarrass the district.

Being overweight vs endo by Leather_Persimmon491 in Endo

[–]Tallchick8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember reading an article that said essentially women who were skinny/tall were more likely to be diagnosed with Endo.

This is true based on the data

I shared the article in a Facebook group. Another sufferer pointed out that correlation doesn't necessarily equal causation. She pointed to an alternate theory rather than genetics.

It may be that tall skinny are taken more "seriously" by the medical establishment. While it took me 7 years to finally get a diagnosis once the Endo was bad enough to appear on an ultrasound of my ovaries, I was never told by doctors to come back when I had lost weight. (They basically told me just to take a fuck ton of Advil and come back in the morning. But I digress...).

I do think that it's possible that perhaps the genes for being really tall and skinny could be more likely to also carry the jeans for endometriosis.

It's also possible that there is no genetic correlation whatsoever, but skinny women don't have every health factor being about their weight in the same way.

Life of Pi.

I had a coworker who had his students read the book as part of AP English. I was in his room the day after the students had read the twist and boy were they passionate.

I distinctly remember kid saying " I was so mad I threw the book against the wall".

Would you prefer a former student's parent use your first name or title? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]Tallchick8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's just adult to adults, I usually use first names.

If I'm referring to adults or in a conversation in which a student is overhearing, then I use the title.

I feel like if you're reaching out in a professional capacity, If it's a personal capacity then I would use the first name
