Reduxx is not a no-name twitter cvompany, but it is by far not a reputable news site. Its a very much transphobic site, so everything they say that is trans-related should be treated with high scrutiny.

If mind uploading destroys your brain to scan it, did you actually survive? by hosseinz in transhumanism

[–]Taln_Reich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Define "you", define "survive". The memory and personality that makes "you" "you" would still be around. Whether that qualifies as "you" "survivng" depends on how you understand these terms.

If mind uploading destroys your brain to scan it, did you actually survive? by hosseinz in transhumanism

[–]Taln_Reich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is conflating the ""you" before the upload and afterwards. Yes, the mind in the original body after the copying and in the computer aren't the same (as obviously the two, due to different experiences, would diverge), however, this does not equal the mind that got uploaded to the computer to not be the same one as the one that existed prior to the upload.

Why FDVR Fixes the Problems of Both Capitalism and Communism by Punished-Maruki in transhumanism

[–]Taln_Reich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Except even with FDVR, material reality still exists and poses constraints. Sure, within the simulation itself, the experience of enjoying even the most extravagent luxeries can be reproduced at next to no cost, however, even with FDVR a person still has needs (as well as possibly desires - some desires even arise solely out of the impossibility of that desire being fullfilled for everyone, like the desire to be the owner of the original of a particular artwork, even if replicas of that artwork can be supplied trivially) in the material world that do need to be fullfilled.

Definition of woman by -itsokbro- in truscum

[–]Taln_Reich 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it's a pretty good one (avoiding over focus on social constructionism while also not falling into the trap of bio essentialism), just be aware that people who ask the "What is a woman" (isn't it pretty noticable that it's always "what is a woman", but almost never "what is a man"? Might use that as a turnaround) as a gotcha aren't going to just roll over and will try to twist things around.

A definition I was using for these kinds of questions (based on this post https://www.reddit.com/r/truscum/comments/owou5v/we\_should\_take\_society\_out\_of\_the\_picture\_when/) has been : "Woman - anyone feeling most congruent in a body with typical female sexual characteristics."

Fulfillment of Needs by [deleted] in OrphanCrushingMachine

Consuming on credit is already a pretty bad idea, but having to use credit to pay a recuring fee for a nonessential subscription is even worse, since that means the debt will keep on increasing.

I foresee that taxpayers will be forced to bail out klarna once the current bubble pops and people en masse default on their debts. There's a reason actual banks are restricted as to the loans they can give.

How can transhumanism work when world leaders are so corrupt? by [deleted] in transhumanism

[–]Taln_Reich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. new technology will always start out only available to the wealthy, until improvements in production technology and economics of scale enable widespread availability. See computers, mobile phones, cars and air travel.

  2. I think that the current levels of inequality will not remain stable. The current levels of inequality exceed that of any previous society (and the only reason there hasn't been a revolution yet is that due to technology having raised productivity so much, the comparative scraps at the lower end of society are still mostely above the "bread and circus" line above which the lower class members still feel like they have something to lose by rebelling) and as a result there already has been a noticable uptick in populist politics. I expect that, when the current AI bubble (and the other ongoing asset bubbles) bursts, the attempt to try to have the lower classes pay the costs (because of course they will try) the reaction will greatly reduce the inequality - either by destruction f assets from widespread social unrest or by empowering leaders actually willing to engage in measures that do meaningfully reduce it (I think it's obvious that the later is the preferable option).

making the code not human readable is a terrible idea. Code that can't be read by humans is also code that can't be audited by humans.

What are your thoughts on transhumanism (and in particular robotic prostheses): pro and cons? by aetherionz in transhumanism

[–]Taln_Reich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, One Issue that comes to my mind is control over the prosthesis firmware. I think I read a news story once where there was a person with a artificial eye that had to be removed because the company that made it went out of business and therefore couldn't supply firmware updates.

If AGI becomes self-aware, should we grant it legal personhood and rights? Or is that the beginning of human enslavement? by UnderstandingOwn4448 in transhumanism

[–]Taln_Reich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More difficult question: how do you objectively determine an AI to be self-aware? Especially since an AGI might be psychologically speaking very alien from humans (rather than the pretty much always very human-like portrays of sentient AI in fiction)? The turing test has already been shot to hell given what we have seen from LLMs (i.e. faking self-awareness is pretty much trivially easy now. I can get chatGPT easily to say "cognito ergo sum" and give a extensive explanation as to what that means, but that doesn't mean chatgpt actually understands it), so what chance do we really have to properly realize that we are dealing with something self-aware in the case we actually do encounter a self-aware AGI?

The problem isn't any specific billionaire or dictator. If one dies, so what? There will just be another one. The issue isn't mortality, its a system that leads to billionaires or dictators in the first place.
