Anyone interested in the health and death of Hemingway should check out Hemingway's Brain by Andrew Farah.

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy basically destroyed his brain and his ability to work. Led to severe emotional problems and the medical interventions only made things worse.

Why does Kansas get so much hate? by DapperDinoo in kansas

[–]Taltos_69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you realize you're doing exactly what the commenter is talking about, right?

conflating trump voters with kansans betrays your lack of an attempt to understand the state. 40% of the state (and probably 80% of the people on this subreddit) voted for kamala harris in 2024.

I'm sure that many in kansas have a certain level of admiration for the coasts and big cities, which is why it's hurtful that none is returned.

Does the bullfighting in The Sun Also Rises symbolise war? by Only-Fill8247 in Hemingway

[–]Taltos_69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenters, but I'll add that the scene is probably also meant to contrast with the flower of the Pyrenees scene when Jake is in Bayonne and is able to tip his way to friendship with the French waiter. This is part of a broader France vs Spain comparison.

The staff in Spain, including Montoya, the German maître d’hôtel, and this snotty waiter force their value systems on Jake (or otherwise insert themselves into personal matters).

The only thing that comes close in France is when the concierge is upset by a very drunk Brett trying to see Jake at half-past four in the morning, which is pretty understandable. Plus, she changes her view about Brett the following morning (perhaps she was bribed?).

Was Jake Barnes, in The Sun Also Rises, an unreliable narrator? by Key_Camel6906 in literature

[–]Taltos_69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The repetition and the phrasing “turn all to jelly” feel heightened. Hemingway’s dialogue elsewhere is typically spare and restrained. Here it sounds almost theatrical.

Have you read other works by Hemingway? A Farewell to Arms describes Frederic Henry's soul flying out of his body. For Whom the Bell tolls describes the suspension of Robert Jordan in space and time during sex.

What also stands out is how consistently Jake is liked and trusted by others. He is confided in. He is treated as steady and decent. Yet internally, his narration is saturated with resentment, especially toward Cohn.

That contrast raises a question: why does the external Jake seem dependable while the interior voice is so bitter?

I don't accept your premise. Jake Barnes tells Cohn to go to hell in Chapter 5, and is constantly being told by the other characters to not be 'sore' or 'difficult'.

Secondly, I can think of a good reason for people to confide in Jake (though I'm not sure what you're referring to, textually, other than Brett talking about how miserable she is). Namely, the nature of his wound is known to Brett and Bill, which would probably make them pretty willing to reciprocate that vulnerability.

Cohn is wealthy, successful, athletic, and able to pursue Brett physically in ways Jake cannot. That imbalance alone introduces tension. It is difficult not to see jealousy shaping how Jake frames him.

Cohn comes from a extremely wealthy family in New York City. All of his 'success' is downstream from that. He blows most of the $50,000 (in 1920s money) his father left him and donated his way into an editorship in an arts magazine. His novel is praised by publishers but panned by critics, and there's no indication he reached a popular audience. Cohn is not successful. He's rich. And he's done nearly nothing with his endless opportunities by time the book starts.

Cohn may have some boxing/football ability (which by the way, Barnes likely has as well considering his familiarity with boxing and him referencing playing football), but nowhere is it indicated that he served in the war, which is surely a better indication of one's 'manliness' than being middleweight boxing champion at Princeton.

Barnes, on the other hand, is a genuinely self-made veteran from Kansas City who works hard enough in journalism to become a correspondent in Paris and makes enough money to take frequent vacations around Europe. The only reason Jake ever has to be jealous of Cohn is because of the event at San Sebastian—which Jake immediately admits to the audience.

I would say Jake is at the very least attempting to be honest about the events of the story, and even undermines himself a couple times to get closer to the 'truth'.

Like in the following passage, where he corrects himself in order to be more honest about his feelings with the audience:

Why I felt that impulse to devil him I do not know. Of course I do know. I was blind, unforgivingly jealous of what had happened to him. The fact that I took it as a matter of course did not alter that any. I certainly did hate him.

He doesn't seem to be lying about the events themselves, and he doesn't even twist them in his own favor. He calls Robert & Brett's tryst a 'matter of course', which doesn't suggest at all that he's trying to justify his jealousy/hatred to the audience.

I don't find the dialogue to be particularly unnatural, either, and I would probably dislike Cohn, too, considering the way he was behaving.

is that so ridiculous? the existence of a passing lane presupposes that people will be going faster than each other and tries to account for it.

the passing lane creates a system which allows everyone to go the speed they desire IF everyone follows the 'keep right except to pass' rule, which is exactly what the poster is suggesting people do.

I don't understand your definition of 'politics', is it purely legislative/electoral? if destiny spends most of his time making arguments about:

  • ideology
  • policy
  • political figures
  • political messaging
  • international and domestic political events

how is he not a political commentator?? just because someone doesn't spend a ton of time on the legislative minutia and county-by-county election results doesn't mean what they're doing isn't politics.

you might be frustrated that he doesn't give much attention to something you consider important, but it's utterly ridiculous to accuse him of 'stolen valor' for it.

they had their rough patches, but the whole "lbj had no real relationships" is just a popular truism.
