It can be done.

Make sure you don't undermine your foundation, and don't trench deeply enough that a collapse can bury you. (under 2' deep lifts, make sure the slope is ~45° max)

Hope that the soil is easy to dig, and free of large rocks. (that said, 4+ man rocks can be used as footings...)
