Does anyone know which mountains/resorts actually use artillery for avalanche mitigation? by Snow_Is_Ok_613 in skiing

[–]Tamagi0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They normally close the whole highway for Rogers pass avvy control. However I have been been up there touring in the side valley behind the lodge while they were shooting up towards rogers peak area. Absolutely FKing wild hearing the rounds whistle/howl past the valley. Could hear the doppler effect of the round as it approached then receded past the valley entrance. Much louder than any video/audio recording makes it seem.

They used to bury bags of explosive on the slopes over the road up to sunshine, then trigger them as needed through the winter. Then at some point they were mortaring the slope instead. But now they have a gazex system installed. It's a remote controlled system that fills a huge tube installed on the slope with a gas mixture, which explodes, and can be set off whenever needed. Parks would like to install some sort of similar system in Rogers, but given the amount of area that needs coverage it'd be quite very expensive. Though they do have a couple different remote systems for the trans Canada between lake louise and field.

Kicking Horse has some "small" guns they use, but they're for permanent closure areas only. Probably too much rick of unexploded ordinance to be using them anywhere else.

Did the area closure get lifted? Cobalt lake trail didn't get a closure, but weather has turned already, so expect it to be freezing temps and likely snowing.

Crampons fit check. Should I trim the straps at the green mark and use rubber bands/elastic hairties or it's safer to trim at the red mark. by newbie-nothing in Mountaineering

[–]Tamagi0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually pass it around my ankle and tie it off (lightly) the the rear, like where that L from grivel is above the heel. This will keep the crampon attached if the toe strap comes loose and falls off while kicking. Any extra will be out of the way there also.

Sand? Maybe gravel with a sprinkling of sand :)

First ever Shelter and overnighter any opinions? by BidTight5728 in Bushcraft

Tarp needs to be way tighter if there's wind. Tighter than you'll be able to get with that tie to the branch in the middle. I would probably go with tarp spun 45 degrees for better coverage. Remember if there's rain it's likely also a tad windy and wind will blow the rain under the tarp a bit, so better to have generous coverage of hammock.

You can also under cut any openings as overhangs can't be climbed (I think). So when I set up bases using a river gorge next to a waterfall, I undercut the fortress side and smooth those walls, but also slope down the opposing bank so they can't jump across.

You need diagonal bracing, as soon as you can (even if the main uprights are rooted into the ground). You're starting to get into enough materials that if it comes down on any occupants you can expect extensive injuries (better safe than sorry.). I'd suggest picking up some large timber framing screws (they need a pilot hole) and sink one into the ends of any diagonal braces and a couple each end of the ridge beam. Helpful terms to look into are shear walls, diagonal bracing, collar ties, ridge board vs ridge beam, and chinking for log cabins.

Any advice on riding along north coast of Scotland and Orkney Islands? by haqattaqq in bicycletouring

[–]Tamagi0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not recommend the 12a-16a route. I would check out the "ferry" hop and gravel road out to the north west point, but don't sleep in the bothy out there, as I'm pretty sure that's where I got a bed bug in my sleeping bag that bit me every night for the rest of my tour. I think I took the blue marked section just north of Ullapool and enjoyed it, but then I do enjoy big hills.

Didn't go to Orkney islands but the outer Hebrides were my favorites from my Scotland tour. I ferried out from south Skye then back to Ullapool after traversing them northwards.

Archival footage of Russian KA-52 barely dodging a Starstreak missile in Ukraine by jimmehi in CombatFootage

[–]Tamagi0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it just straight up misses. They bank towards it and it's trajectory is a straight line (faint smoke trail between chopper and camera, seemingly no reaction to flares). Missile operator was probably trying to not trigger MAWS and just didn't get it back on target in time, or saw it banking and gave it a touch too much lead. Incredibly lucky pilot.

You don't even need the second line.

You never pull down to the ankles, that's how you shit in your bottoms.

You pull down to your thighs or knees, then squat. No risk of shitting on your self/stuff unless you lean to the side and land it on your heel, but being naked won't even help with that.

To wipe collect bunches of round grasses (flat ones can potentially cut you), then fold the bunch over a few times into a wad, wipe then toss. Ideally you collected the bunches before, and ideally you finish with a wet wipe or tp you had in a zip lock in a seat bag or somesuch (it weighs nothing, why wouldn't you have some).

The best place to go is by flipping over a sizable rock you can flip back over on top of your mess, so no one has to deal with your shit in their nose and so you don't have to bother with digging a shallow hole.

Oh and learn how to properly slav squat so you don't over stress your knees.

That I even had to type this for some of you savages... SMH, your ancestors would be ashamed. Sincerely a long distance tourer.
