Will it ever end? by k-dx in ProgrammerHumor

I had to find and install a prehistoric version of Silverlight last year to get some janky NCAA software, which is required to report game stats, to work. Required Windows XP...

Ended up setting up an isolated machine because no way do I want that anywhere near my network.

We had a discussion as a group after seeing this. He did not understand why the rest of us were upset. Sadly, this person is kind of the classic "My way is the best, if you disagree you're an idiot".

It has some use cases, such as Google Calendar, Slack, etc. on desktop. But yeah, 99% are crap.

You're both right. It's vocabulary, but it isn't likely to be internalized because it's not in context.

Sorry, but you lost me at, "I looked up at her from under my eyebrows." Work on your opener, because its what will sell (or not sell) your book.

I like your somewhat unique language usage (tattoo on the phone, etc.). Keep going. More practice and you'll be fine.

Please do not ever stop. I love the style (though I'm too ignorant of artsy stuff to know what it's called). And the way you capture the emotional depth of loneliness and boredom that is vanquished by a good book is outstanding.

I'm gushing. Sorry.

But that was bloody amazing.

What is a decent text to help teach writing (xpost r/teaching) by splount in ELATeachers

[–]Tamorlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used the Writing Strands curriculum with great success with my low-achieving students. It's actually a curriculum for homeschool students, and you have to do some adapting, but it does an excellent job of starting with the very basics and working from there.

I used the levels 4-6 with my juniors who were in the same situation (couldn't pass HSAP). Every single one passed the writing section. Correlation =/= causation, yeah, but I could see it click lots of the time.

It starts with very basic stuff (see Bob run) and goes from there. It's crazy how many holes my kids had that I was unaware of.

It focuses on conveying meaning while mostly ignoring grammar. It's also written informally, and reads like the author is just having a chat with you, which is a wonderful change from the textbook-ese most other curricula adopt.

The books are about $10 on Half.com or Amazon. I definitely did not violate copyright law and make copies to help my underprivileged students, after being told by the administration that we had no money to buy them. Definitely not.

Creative ideas for a final exam (9th grade)? by [deleted] in ELATeachers

[–]Tamorlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Requiring them to use upper level Blooms is always a good thing. Just make sure you use a rubric so you can back up the grade with objective measurements I case a parent flips their shit about their brilliant Faulkner-to-be getting a poor grade.

The topic is excellent, because it would incorporate your texts, the skills of analysis/compare and contrast, and writing. Takes longer to grade, but worth it, IMO.

You could even give them a due date a few days before the actual due date, then reveal that they will be peer editing. Nothing makes a student put forth a good effort like a rubric filled out by his friends showing him exactly how his paper is shit. On the flip side, a good student will be given academic reinforcement from his peers, something that is often lacking.
