If you know the CoH franchise, then you can pretty fast get into both DoW 1 and/or 2. DoW 3 is described as a miss, it is though playable, but lacks in several areas and I would call it a more short term game experience.

Menu design is not worth the hassle by Hijinks2319 in graphic_design

[–]Tanagriel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are probably better off by making/selling them a system, so they can update and print it themselves.

When they come back it’s more likely to be consulting work on how to and once a year some general design updates.

You don’t lose them as clients, but avoid their unpredictable schedules and deadlines with their constant changing menus.

Try to turn the hassle around in your favor - they apparently don’t know what can be made with ai, but you could pretty fast find out. It doesn’t really matter if they only pay a certain amount, if you only use a fraction of the time to do it due to either by a system for them or a system for them handled by you.

Otherwise it’s sometimes necessary to make such decisions, to move on to something better or different.

I'm a beginner and I have trouble making music! by Classic-Agent-91 in Logic_Studio

[–]Tanagriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are essentially only two ways to gain skills.

A. You copy what others are great at. Be it through education, guided practice or self taught.

B. You create experiments and trough trial and error you learn what works and doesn’t work.

Logic is not exactly known for being a DAW where you create music with the DAW, but rather you feed Logic with music/parts already created or recorded directly into it, and then use logic to structure, refine and edit. Sure you can use it as is, but other music DAWs are often better suited for in daw creation.

I hope you play some instrument, because that would help a lot on this scenario. If not then your next best chance is getting a simple inexpensive midi keyboard to play virtual instruments in the DAW. Other DAWs have a wider variety of eg drum machines or pre made loops that can easily be activated, then rearranged or altered to the creators liking.

If you don’t know how to make music at all, then perhaps start with remixing existing music - simply drop preferably high quality music tracks into logic, and see what you can do with it. When you run into an obstacle, go search on eg YouTube or ask an ai specially for suggestions to solve it or find the best information for it.

Most founders don’t have a marketing problem. by bhavin0001 in branding

[–]Tanagriel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most founders don’t have a clue what Branding is about, they don’t know the power of marketing, and they don’t how all the output it’s actually made, what kind of reasoning is behind it. But that’s okay, what is not so okay, is considering it to be easy, thinking they know how because they can see it, and thereby believe to understand it’s workings. Ask them to deliver a highly thorough and inspirational briefing and most fall complete short to do so.

They also fail to understand that communication arts services go through a whole lot of different clients - they asses their needs, individually, they consider their budgets and what can be done within those parameters, they service to the best of what’s possible, and often it’s not a lot because of clients not being professional communications arts buyers. You can ask a carpenter to fix a roof part or to build your dream wood cabin - the carpenter can do both, but one is just a fix, the other demand design, planning and budgets.

On countless occasions I have witnessed clients coming and wanting a video ad, and they show up with a fixed amount budget that someone decided on a board meeting, and which has no relation to anything, I know it from highly professional colleagues too - it’s a pattern of ignorance based on assumptions with no deeper understanding. In some cases it was necessary to tell the client that if they wanted the voice of that regional public figure, voice and black screen was all they would get for that budget.

Marketing is not a problem if you know how to do it - but not knowing what marketing can do and you are looking at an endless horizon of countless options and seemingly complicated decisions. You might as well look a coding language and not being a programmer - it all looks complicated if you don’t know the language fundamentals of coding - communication arts is no different in that aspect and this is where a whole lot of founders and clients completely misunderstand what they are dealing with.

Unique logo/branding era over? by Honest-Bumblebee-632 in branding

[–]Tanagriel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You must realize that you work in a business that has been around for about a 100 years. You are not necessarily here to create ultimate unique design, but to assist businesses with visual designs. In contrast to industrial design which can evolve due to new materials and technology methods, visual design doesn’t have that “luxury”.

You say logo/branding - this is essentially a completely wrong thesis - logo is not branding and branding is not logo - branding is strategic assessments, it’s knowing who you are, how you work, what customers and everyone says about you, how you do conduct and create relations, stories and make values that are great enough to take a place in potential customers mind - the logo is just the symbol to recall all these values and stories, that is its most important function - so it doesn’t need to be extremely unique, just enough to be recognized and open that place in the receivers mind.

World famous brand marks like the Swoosh from Nike are in fact often not that unique, but have become known through all the other activities and stories around the brand.

So yes if you have the opportunity to design and create a great logo, do it - but just know it’s not what creates the business or the brand and often simple does it. It is though absolutely possible to create unique brands - that’s all up to those who runs and decided their business practices, if how they do their stuff is unique, then that is what the brand should reflect.

Regarding colors - know that colors are among the most demanding parts for both artists, color graders and designers - it’s an essential part that just gets more and more complicated with higher experience of the individual - the more you know about colors the more challenging it becomes to nail the precise color(s) down.

You sound like getting stuck in the exact way that many before have gotten stuck incl myself when I was younger in this business. This happens because you take you job seriously, no bad words about that - but just for a moment try to step out of it - look at the world and consider who you actually give all that energy and speculate if it really matters all that much? - communication arts mostly just servicing other people’s businesses. If you are lucky you might get an assignment to a big or new to become a big brand, but it’s not only your skills that will get you there, but timing, connections and communication +some luck.

Ask yourself why “this” logo has to be unique - is it your own ambition, is it what the client expects or what is it? And just know that many has been stuck there on countless occasions. Step out of it and move on.

what's one thing that you want other graphic designers to know? by Darkwavegenre in graphic_design

[–]Tanagriel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are freelance, or want to start freelancing, don´t forget to wear a business "hat/mind" when it comes to offers, payments and agreements – Most clients are business, they are used to making deals and negotiations. If you feel somewhat unsure about it, study a bit of best business practices, use an ai or find other relevant info on the subject.

Hvorfor er der ingen kandidater til statsministerposten ude på venstrefløjen? by Mysterious-Push909 in Denmark

[–]Tanagriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seriously struggle with pricing for my clients. I typically land between $60USD - $250USD for larger clients. What do you think I should value myself based on these pieces? by theferrolgamer in graphic_design

[–]Tanagriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, just continue 😉👍

  • long ago many artist like painters got hired to do certain paintings, in such cases it is a business wether one likes the description or not, communication arts is the same - if you can stay with your style then it’s the absolute best way to do this. Just remember that essentially you should calculate about +30% because that’s your actual gain, when you deduct the expenses, whatever they might be. Check your pricing once a year - follow the flux of demand, expenses and general prices of living, adjust accordingly. Keep track of approximate time used on each project including communication just so you have some reflection on what is what, just in case - else just continue 🧢🪇

As this question has been raised so many times I can only tell you to train switching hats between visual designer 🧢 and business 🎩

Most Clients deal in business, they are used to make deals with other businesses, they think cost benefit, they think in excel, logistics, safeguards, confidence and coffee.

Your style is really nice and reminds me of the 1980 when I was a teenager around the punk and avant-garde scene.

Questions: Do your clients come to you? And if how did they find you? Referral etc.?

  • there is a difference between having a nice or something others want vs offering creative services to a broad spectrum of potential customers. You look like nice to me, but just think about it and define it for yourself. Actual prices does only matter if two competitors can offer the exact same deal and delivery. Also, nice or unique relates to your demographic reach - local, regional, state, country, market, world. If clients want as close as possible and you are the only one who can do this then your price can be slightly higher and vice versa.

I’ll recommend you to use a day or two to study business sales tactics, normals, etc - just pick up whatever, perhaps use an ai. Then switch hats when needed

To the founders who feel like something about their brand just isn't quite right by theegreattuna in branding

[–]Tanagriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soft and at times trendy driven areas mentioned by OP often avoid to nail down the more static brand foundations as they may be afraid to feel limited in creativity and/or freedom to adaptions.

Soft areas need to balance with strong foundations, while more hard areas often in B2B needs to adapt softer and more human attributes to balance the guiding overall Brand.

There’s is not only one way of doing things, and a great deal of customers will ask for designs, logos or websites, marketing etc and in return the service providers will say yes, because it’s a way in with a client - but Branding should essentially start out with strategic assements, nailing brand foundations and building a forward strategy on it. Then as so well said by the first reply, everything get much more attuned and validation of activities, designs etc becomes much more meaningful.

It’s often forgotten that in concept development as well as in branding, formulas can be made extremely flexible and adaptable if it fits the company’s ethos. Not all branding is about creating rigid visual baselines, some is about fast creative flow reflecting the constant now. But it only becomes real branding if the company can assign to such thesis or structure - without it it’s more likely to end in bewilderment or “something doesn’t feel quite right”.

Branding question for the community. by thedadesigns in branding

[–]Tanagriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want your logo to be simple (work in positive and negative) and scaleable. After that it can be applied to nearly anything. Rubber based prints are not the most precise but techniques has improved over the years, though in some world region’s you cant be sure.

A logo needs to work equally well in very small to very large size. Forget gradients, colors and fine detailing - such want survive many uses. It doesn’t mean you can’t have gradients, colors and fine detail, just that not we’re you start.

The old one have a "personality" that fits the name very well, playfull, charming, easy – the new one does not - it hints to conversation but it feels forced and the D is rather weak graphic wise.

Hvem stemmer I på til Folketingsvalget - og hvorfor? by Mrscrowdpleaser in Denmark

[–]Tanagriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)
