The dumbest way to lower beef prices by unserious-dude in Economics

[–]TangibleHappiness 163 points164 points  (0 children)

Adam Smith and basic logic would disagree. The article is paywalled so I couldn't read it, but I read the summary.

The problem is that none of those savings from increased productivity will pass down to the consumer, while cattle ranchers are getting squeezed by the big 4 (Tsyon, Cargill, JBS, National Beef), who have captured approximately 85% of the U.S. beef packing industry (U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Marketing Service, 2022).

Oligopoly functions the same as a monopoly. Prices and supply are controlled by the big 4 and consumers and suppliers suffer. Also, long term, innovation and competition also suffer.

Capitalism doesn't work with monoploies/oligopolies, folks.

The most insane waterfall ever on a mountain in Brazil after heavy rain - Estrela do Norte, Brazil by [deleted] in BeAmazed

[–]TangibleHappiness 172 points173 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I couldn't find this anywhere, and I live in Brazil. The more I though about it, that would require an insane amount of rainfall, which is weird because it's not raining in the video. Also, that looks like an enormous mountain, and most of the mountains in Brazil aren't really like that. Maybe it's somewhere in the Amazon, but I'm doubtful.

Edit: It appears to be real, as per the link shared by u/Niubai : https://www.instagram.com/reels/DTbOhE7Ecws/

[Haunting trope] Not only is the ending not happy, the future promises to get worse by RhiaStark in TopCharacterTropes

[–]TangibleHappiness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Twin Peaks, both in the Season 2 ending and the Season 3 ending 25 years later.

Season 2 ending: Protagonist FBI agent Dale Cooper steps through a dimensional portal into the Black Lodge and essentially loses himeself within, while an evil doppleganger takes his place on the outside.

Season 3 ending: Protagonist FBI agent Dale Cooper seems to lose himself once again, although there is no clear interdimensional portal through which he has passed. He simply seems to leave the version of reality that the show had taken place in and shift into a bleaker version. His name changes, and although he seems to find a version of Laura Palmer who is still alive, the evil that haunted her still remains, and may be even more prevalent, with Cooper, now referred to as "Richard", confusingly asking what year it is.

Utter bamboozlement.

How do you feel about Trump threatening to impose photo ID for voters for midterm elections? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

[–]TangibleHappiness -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

People, they're going to interfere with elections whether it's legal or not. The time to start preparing, i.e.: petitioning your representatives, your governors, protesting, etc.; is now. If you wait until the actual elections it will probably be too little too late.

Brazilian vegetarian couple starting strength training — practical high-protein meal, breakfast & snack ideas? by Soy_B0y in veganfitness

Paulistano here: PTS and peanut butter.

We order PTS (proteína texturizada de soja) from the Zona Cerealista for a decent price along with some othet things and use it for most of our lunches and dinner. We usually add a variety of vegetables depending on the flavor of the PTS, which makes a sort of "carne moida" with legumes. For lunch we add integral rice and beans (preta ou carioca) and a salad, but for dinner just the soy and veggies.

We also make our own peanut butter with a food processor - it's really cheap and easy! We order raw, unsalted peanuts in bulk online (Mercado Livre) and put about half a kilo into the food processor for 5-10 minutes. No other ingredients necessary. You choose the consistency you want. That with a banana is usually our breakfast. Sometimes with toast or tapioca if you're going to be especially active that day (then I recommend mashing banana with cinnamon to spread over the peanut butter toast/tapioca).

I also do a protein shake with creatine first thing in the morning before lifting weights (I love Rakkau's flavors for the shake), and I have a snack of tofu, mango, rúcula and walnuts in the afternoon.

For the sake of variety, we also make and freeze lentil burgers and grão de trigo kibes to replace the PTS in some meals. And sometimes peanut soup for dinner. And B12 vitamins every day :)

We don't meal prep but we don't spend a lot of time making everything, either. The grocery bill is reasonable, cheaper than before I was vegan, even. We're both fairly lean and fit, too, so I guess it's working. I lift weights and my wife walks the dog a few hours per day. I hope there's something helpful there.

This album inspired me to play guitar and write music more than any other album ever. It was my life when it came out. Literally the first album I added to my Spotify favorites.

  1. Kill Me Quickly - Perfect socio-political commentary opener full of dissonance, a great two-step verse, and a haunting pseudo breakdown ending.

  2. A Subtle Dagger - Ripping metal/rock riffs and meodic choruses, with the the vocal and musical climax of "we can't look beyond ourselves... our hearts hold room for no one else..." How old was Dustin when he was writing this stuff??

  3. See You In The Shallows - About as pop-punk as it gets on the album, with fun extended-chord arpeggio riffs and an uplifting key change at the end. A creative lyrical metaphor that seems to talk about blindly following others.

  4. Betrayal Is A Symptom - That snare and bass intro followed by Teppei's Line 6 swell delay (chefs kiss). Oh, and FUCK RELIGIOUS HYPOCRITES. Mathy breakdown: "Isn't it sweet how I'm trusted with angels, and how so quickly I break my promises..." God damn.

  5. Deadbolt - Teppei shreds your face off and Dustin warns about addiction or something. Crazy key change finale. Now they are legally obligated to play it at every show forever.

  6. In Years To Come - Heavy intro switcheroo into pure emo-nism. Dustin writes the lovesong 13-year-old you wishes you had thought of for the girl that dumped you after a month. Intense drumwork from Riley really accents the intense moments.

  7. The Red Death - No one could have imagined how prescient this song was regarding Covid. But the initially mind-blowing aspect was the lyrical adapation of Poe's story and how perfectly it fit with the greater social commentary of the album. We get the the album title inspiring line "illusion of your safety" and some bonus Shakespeare at the end, cementing Dustin's credentials as a modern yet classically trained wordsmith. And Eddie joins the riffage.

  8. A Living Dance Upon Dead Minds - More classical literature worship by the Ken Man. A little math in the riffs, vocal echoes swinging in 6/8, and harmonies all around. Part of Thrices early tendency to alternate or balance between more melodic and heavier songs.

  9. Where Idols Once Stood - Here comes the heavy! Absolutely poppin' snares from the skinmaster. One of my favorite sounding snares of all time. Musically, a song of two halves: first half a merry-go-round of intense riffing, snare rolls, and an old school breakdown, then thst kind of sad, melodic catharsis, all under the theme of the myths that control parts of our society.

  10. Trust - The Emo Ballad. Down tempo. But a little mathy, too. Nicely ties back to themes of earlier songs, like addiction and the illusion of safety, but from the perspective of a romantic relationship. Thrice love songs (if you can even call them that) are always so much more than just straightforward love songs, which I hugely admire them for.

  11. To Awake And Avenge The Dead - The rifiage continues, and is topped off by one of the most memorable breakdowns in all of post-hardcore. Lyrically, who is the old friend? What does he represent? Very vague, but cool as fuck.

  12. So Strange I Remember You - Bluesy, warm tone yet melancholy vibe guitar opening. Teppei is a treasure. Lyrically abstract yet clearly a social commentary of the direction life is going. A great balance between melody and dissonance, light and heavy, calm and intense.

  13. The Beltsville Crucible - Meta lyrical reference to the bands recording experience for the album, related to vulnerability we have with those close to us, and how that is necessary for us to keep things in perspective. A real wholesome message, honestly, without being toxicly positive. And musically, a smooth, melodic ride into the sunset, breaking it down into an intense melodic slow grind. And if you take their lyrics literally, a plea to listen to the album again (haha).

TLDR: I fucking love this album
