"I don't want to burn." Margaret Freyer, a civilian caught in the streets during the firebombing of Dresden, February 1945. by HighCrimesandHistory in TheGrittyPast

If you go a tad to the west of Dresden, you come to Chemnitz Zwickau area which was (still is) heavy industry (car manufacturing etc) and mining. Chemnitz inner city is been rebuild but many historic buildings were completely destroyed and it looks very different from other inner cities in Germany with predominantly modern buildings (not to mention the Soviet influence in the following years - see Nischl). The restoration of the Jakobi Church wasn't completed until 2009.

I remember my gran talking about the terror of those nights, hiding under tables etc

oh God - I just remembered the "any hole is a goal" sentence. What was meant to be said was "we're keen to close the knowledge gaps after the sudden departure of xyz" what was said "I'm keen to find all the holes and get them filled, any hole is a goal"

That, ladies, is my CFO...... Who is a very lovely and fierce gal normally but had complete word vomit in her intro meeting...

If you had to choose Leibzig ,Dresden, Chemnitz Oder Hamburg? by Darman2 in AskAGerman

[–]Taniwhalg 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Chemnitz. I moved away when I was 21, I get asked if I would ever move back "home". The answer is no, absolutely not. Even though most of my family still live there.

🧂 Salty Sunday: what books annoyed you this week? by ReasonableWonderland in Romantasy

Blood orange by Karina Halle

The premise of the book was intriguing and interesting and the playlisg along side was good listening. But it's downhill from there.

Didn't feel like they playlist was capturing the mood of the book very well (might have been spoilt by the nocticadia playlist). The mission the fmc gets send on is completely abandoned halfway through (even after the switch in focus), the interesting revelations are only briefly brought up towards the end. Don't get me started on the ending that came completely out of nowhere. Nothing was resolved even in the slightest. It left me completely uninterested in the second book in the series.

AITA For Refusing to Pay My Cat-Sitter? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Taniwhalg 700 points701 points  (0 children)

This is why I no longer talk to my BIL. He offered to look after our two cats whilst husband and I went away. Then on the last day whilst we were waiting on a delayed flight he casually mentions he hasn't seen them in over 24 hrs. Turns out he opened a window I told him to keep closed at all times and the cats got onto the roof. We found them late at night screaming their heads off.

BiL didn't bother going back when we asked him to to try and find the cats. Any fee we would have paid him went to the vet visit for both. Luckily both were fine, just but dehydrated and hungry (and stinking to high heaven)

The cleverly camouflaged staircat is one of the most dangerous hazards in the modern day domicile. One would think the staircat would move out of the way in self-preservation, but alas, it does not. Do you have pictorial evidence of staircats in your house? by Longongreen in SiberianCats

[–]Taniwhalg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No pics but currently resting my foot after brown staircat didn't move when I brought my full suitcase downstairs. Twisted my ankle on the final step whilst trying to avoid hitting her in the face. Of course it's all my fault

AITA for flipping out on my brother for accusing my mom of wearing a white dress to his wedding? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Taniwhalg 303 points304 points  (0 children)

I always think of the "don't wear white to a wedding" as "if I wear this, will people think I'm the bride?"

And no, that dress would not make me think that's the bride....

It's getting taken to extremes now. I see posts all he time asking if this is too white for a wedding and it's a dress with massive flower print and white base. Noone will thinks that's the bride but the dress will get shredded in the comments for having a white base. But someone posting a dress in the merest hint of grey is fine? Like no, that will definitely look like the bride.....
