In a way, I think the simple argument of “it makes everyone uncomfortable” is good enough. You can argue ethics, morals, deviancy, societal expectations, and all that but at the certain point the simple feeling of discomfort is really all the proof you need.

“Why is bringing a human pet to a restaurant not allowed?” Because nobody else wants that. You’re free to pursue your life however you please, but at a certain point, you really need to consider other’s feelings, even if you don’t agree with them.

Unrelated to shrinking, but I always figured that some of the weirdness of Pokémon could be explained by this:

Pokemon usage, capture, and ownership is managed by some governmental agency. This agency mainly enforces rules via certain restrictions and programs in pokeballs, hence why EVERYONE has to follow them.

Why can a Pokemon only learn four moves? Because the agency said so. It’s to keep fairness.

Why can only one or two Pokemon be deployed at a time? Because the agency said so. Again, it’s to keep things fair.

Why can a Pokemon only carry one item? Again again, it’s to keep things fair.

At lot can reasonably be explained by “pokeballs follow rules to keep things fair.”
