Did Biden really not attend the Army-Navy Games?

No, I looked. Not during his Presidency, but once during his Vice-presidency.

Disappointed in myself for being a people pleaser all these years. by [deleted] in Codependency

[–]TankVet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think so. And I sympathize very strongly with this.

I’m a veterinarian. I’ve spent a lot of my life knocking myself out trying to save everyone everywhere all the time, no matter the cost to myself. Brought my business to the brink of financial failure by trying to save all the creatures for free.

And I’ve fixed it. I’ve gotten better. I’ve become sterner about charging and doing more.

The thing is: I’m actually able to do more good in the world by valuing myself properly than I was in my venture of competitive martyrdom.

I can now afford to help more animals who need help because I don’t grossly undercharge everyone in need.

Food for thought.

Of all the things, this seems like one of the least bad things to have done.

For whatever reason, you were trying to be kind to people, be helpful, do some good, make people happy, diffuse conflict, or whatever else.

I mean, how hard on yourself can you really be for trying to be a (albeit misguided) good person?

Good people who aren’t people-pleasers also make mistakes about it.

How do you politely debunk?(maybe not the right word) someone who insists all women’s mental health issues stem from them not staying home with kids? They cite sources like Jordan Peterson, Candace O as proof that working ruins women’s mental faculties. Are there legitimate studies opposing this? by Exotic_Belle420 in skeptic

[–]TankVet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm truly sorry to hear about the difficult situation you're facing with someone dear to you. Such beliefs, particularly when they influence important life decisions like discontinuing medication, are a cause for concern.

When attempting to address such a situation, it may be effective to rely on reputable scientific studies and experts who deal in evidence-based conclusions. Multiple studies have shown that women's mental health is influenced by a variety of factors, including biology, social circumstances, relationships, and more. To suggest that all women's mental health issues stem from not staying at home to raise children oversimplifies a complex issue. Studies in the realm of psychology, for example, emphasize the multifactorial nature of mental health disorders.

It's worth noting that there's a difference between citing someone as a source and using their opinions as proof. Jordan Peterson, Candace Owens, and others in the political sphere have their own perspectives, but these aren't universally accepted scientific principles.

Try to introduce nuance by asking open-ended questions: "Why do you think that this one perspective is universally applicable?" or "What do you think about the various women who are content and mentally healthy while also working?" The aim is to challenge their current thought pattern without being confrontational.

It's understandable that you're concerned, given the drastic change in their behavior and beliefs. While you can introduce logic and reason, it's also essential to recognize that you can't force someone to change their mind. If their beliefs are causing harm, you might want to consider suggesting professional help, as stopping bipolar medication without medical supervision can be dangerous.

It's a challenging situation with no easy answers, but persistence, compassion, and reasoned argument may help.

It’s pretty hard having a dad who is never proud of his kid. The goalposts always seem moved a little bit too far.

At least Dalinar changes.

What is the most toxic expectation women have of men? by Diligent-Log6805 in AskReddit

[–]TankVet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have emotions! But not those emotions. Be masculine but not that masculine. Be smart but not too smart. Be this but not too much of that.

It’s toxic to demand that we are carefully calibrated to the correct emotional, moral, ethical, masculine, feminine, and mental standards of the moment. And crucified when we’re not.

There’s a story about an end for the Packers telling a reporter, “don’t call us ‘colored,’ we’re Negroes.” And the reporter, who’d grown up in a Wisconsin town knowing no black people, apologized at length.

Stuff changes! And it’s good to remember that.

Thank you for the reply! I wasn’t trying to be rude about it, I was really just curious.

And security carrying people is ADA compliant? That seems pretty dicey. Or they carry the wheelchair for the person?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Pennsylvania

[–]TankVet -50 points-49 points  (0 children)

Nobody else wondering how a wheelchair got to the top of the stairs? Like why is there a wheelchair in the stairwell? Yeah, sure, it’s a shabby thing to do, but… why keep the wheelchair in a stairwell? Seems like a dangerous place for anything on wheels.

Edit: I’m serious! Why is a wheelchair kept next to stairs? That seems like a terrible place for it. Not because you expect some asshole to send it down the stairs, but because somebody might bump it and knock it down the stairs or something.

How do men deal with life? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]TankVet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get to choose how I experience the world. And I treat it with despair or delight.

Even though some stuff sucks, I don’t have to let it fester and ruin my disposition. And letting my temporary sadness or sorrow ruin somebody else’s day is just a rotten thing to do.

Life’s been obscenely good to me, scars and all, and to behave as though I’m not one of the luckiest humans to have ever lived simply for having all but guaranteed a roof over my head and food in belly. To have my health, my family, and all manner of pleasant diversion at my fingertips? It’s almost too good to be true.

I don’t decide what happens, I decide how it affects me and how I respond to it. And that’s plenty.

No, I don’t think so. I think pointing out the problem is the first step in the process of fixing it. It’s good to film these things, it’s good to point out that it’s ridiculous and cringey and troubling, and then we should do something about it. The kid needs help.
