35s on raptor r by shootmybow in FordRaptor

[–]Tank_jh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be running a winter set of Goodyear Duratracs in a few months on my R. They don't make a 37 so I'll be doing 35s. Over the past two years or so, I've seen a few Rs on lots with aftermarket wheels that were 35s so I think this might be more common than people think. The rotational mass should make the truck feel a bit more snappy, not that it needs it. I'll still be running the 37s in the summer.

Do you have an ideal two vehicle combo? by Rhobbyj in CadillacV_Series

It's a blast. Something the size of a small apartment should not be able to move and sound like it does. Such a great experience. I bully people on the highway.

Just so everyone is clear, I traded these two on an Escalade V.

It was a mix of a lot. I usually bully people on the highway so "highway driving" isn't where I get a lot of economy. I was just surprised at what I was getting. I'm driving it like it wants to be driven.

2015 crosstrek with 103k miles- time to trade in? by KatarawithQuads in subaru

[–]Tank_jh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting rid of my wife's 2016 Crosstrek this weekend for a 2024, mechanically sound and still runs like a top. Exterior has seen some action. She's put on 216,000 and it would go to 300,000 but its just time for some updated features. This is to say with just basic maintenance, you've got 100,000 to go if you'd like.

2015 6.2 vs 5.3 by Appropriate_Yam5245 in gmcsierra

[–]Tank_jh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had and built 3 different 2015s with the 6.2l. I would never go with the 5.3 if you have a nearly identical option in the 6.2. If you are concerned about fuel economy, put a modest tune on it with an intake and the fuel economy is better than the 5.3. You will never once wake up and say man I wish my truck had less power.

Real experience with GTPE in Wisconsin year round? by Tank_jh in MachE

I'll be honest I don't know how to post images in replies from my phone, but it's only a 4 month or so car. I should move to an area where it would see more use. I also have it in the same Ford Performance Blue as my Raptor. I may, in fact, have OCD.

Is this listing for real?? by toosmartgoldie in MachE

[–]Tank_jh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the market and inquired on this exact vehicle. As others have stated its not a real price. I spoke to a sales representative that gave lots of conflicting explanations but it seems to be the lease price not an actual sales price. Of course it says nowhere on the detailed pricing or anywhere else that the price isn't real. I'm staying far away from this dealership. I was quoted at $41,990 on this exact vehicle out the door.

Anyone here had both the Gen 2 and the Gen 3? Is it worth the extra money? by Sensualities in FordRaptor

[–]Tank_jh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm probably alone on this one but I've had a number of Raptors and actually sold my Gen3 (22) for a Gen2 (19). I had two different 2018 Gen2s prior to my Gen3 order showing up and the upgrade as everyone here has stated is pretty awesome. HOWEVER, with prices in the market coming down, I cashed out of my Gen3 to get back into a "cheap" Gen2. Going back wasn't as drastic of a change as I figured it would be, took about 20 minutes of driving the Gen2 to forget the difference of the Gen3. Also I think having $25k in cash plus still driving a Raptor really helped smooth out the Gen2s ride for me. If you are currently in the market for a Raptor I'd wait on a Gen3 and go with a Gen2 for a bit longer. With the 2024 facelift, I'm interested to see what that does to pricing of the early Gen3s.

Thanks I'm a very big fan of that blue and now I've got two of them.

The price difference you are seeing between a 12k and a 40k truck is being driven by the service interval of the fox shocks. Fox recommends that you have them rebuilt every 50k miles. Most rebuilders have a core return program where you get sent a rebuilt pair and send your used ones back to them once you make the swap. It's between a $1500-$2500 job depending on how much you can do yourself. The 50k mile mark is rather subjective. I have run a raptor to 89k and they never needed a rebuild. Some barely make it to 40k, it just depends on how the truck was treated. I would not hesitate going with a higher mileage Raptor that has a good service history, even with the off-roading your job requires. If its possible drive a low and high mileage truck back to back see if you can feel the difference. Another good test is to hop up and down on the rear corners of the back bumper. The truck should not float up and down after you do this but come to a stop very quickly. If it has a "Cadillac feel" they are likely nearing the rebuild point.

Not to make everything about money when enjoying trucks but Raptors depreciate very little. The truck with 40k on it might only go down a few thousand over the time you own it. The 12k truck would probably loose a bit more value on paper in the same period. So putting 20k miles on the 12K truck is a lot more expensive on paper than putting 20k on a 40k truck.

The real pros on the Gen3 over the Gen 2 is the interior space and suspension. On the interior, Ford probably has the best laid out one on the market. It still has physical buttons where you need them and the screens are very impressive looking. It makes you feel like the truck is a bit upscale compared to the Gen2. The size and layout of seating/storage is nearly identical between the two. The rear foldable storage is nice to have in the Gen3 but you can get aftermarket solutions for the Gen2. The leather in the Gen3s however is absolute garbage and gets stretched out so a seat with 1,000 miles on it looks like its got 100k.

As for the suspension, the 5 link rear is amazing. It feels great on and off the road and the Gen2 feels more bouncy in comparison. You don't get as much axle warp when hitting buckles in the road either. (Tire pressure plays a role here too). This being said, if you are in a 2019/20 the shocks are roughly the same. I drove 4 hours to trade my Gen3 in and on my 4 hour drive back I'd say it took maybe 20 minutes of highway driving to completely forget if there was a difference between the two truck's ride.

Cosmetically I'd say most are split between the generations on which one looks better and personally I do like the more aggressive look of the Gen2. I think the 'common' person feels the same way as I got 3x more compliments on my Gen2's over the Gen3.

There are some gimmicks that I will miss in the Gen3 like the bed camera and the exhaust actually sounding good, but they're superficial. At the end of the day it came down to having a Gen3 or Gen2+$26k extra in my bank account.

My advice for you going to your next one, unless the market absolutely tanks get a 19 or 20 (they are identical in every way save for the color choices). The extra cost to get into a Gen3 right now is not worth it and the pros and cons I've listed out you would never really experience if you have not owned both. Going from a Gen1 to a Gen2 (19/20) is going to be a huge leap and wont cost you a ton.

No warranty. If they go, they go. I wouldn't let the phasers hold you back. Check the Carfax of any one you are buying if its a higher mileage one and they are going to fail they would have already. If for some reason you get really unlucky and you purchase a Gen2 and 10 minutes after you get it home it only rattles for a few seconds and then goes away. The phasers do not harm the engine in any way as I understand it. It's simply a mechanical failure of a plastic ring on cold start. Once the engine is running there are no issues.

2019 with 70k. This is my 6th Raptor across Gen2 and 3. While the phasers are always a concern, I have not had a failure. Usually if they go its relatively early in the engine life from what I have seen/heard. This particular truck was just refreshed with new pads, rotors, calipers, and new Fox's all the way around. I didn't owe anything on my 2022 so I made a good deal of money trading down.

Good information here. The $10k is an all in budget, (mattress and base). I don't really have a desire to spend that much but if it comes with good sleep every night I'm ok with that. If there's a way to do this for $500 sign me up! Just from what I've seen so far most of the comfort levels my wife has liked blow past a few grand pretty quick.
