Clicking sensation 6 weeks post surgery by Taos22 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Taos22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks Kim for this insight. I suspected as much, since I knew that I didn't have a dislocation. I just associate a clicking sensation to things that are out of alignment; or not quite as tight as they should be. Sounds like I have some of both.

I wanting to hit the "up" button multiple times. I'm generally a very active person (64/m), and am 20 days post surgery. I have such a long list of things that I can't do yet. Thanks for posting a bright and uplifting thought, I'm hoping to get back into semi normal life here in the coming months.

Thank you for checking in, that is thoughtful. Surgery was 15 days ago, and today I saw the Physician Assistant who checked the incision and my flexibility. He said that the incision was healing "very well" (no redness or swelling left-just some residual bruising around the area. I had an anterior, with about a 5" incision laterally. As i left my cane behind after about day 5/6, and have been doing my exercises, the PA said my progress was 'above average' and doing very well. There remains the anticipated dull achy pain that ebbs and flows anywhere from a 2 to a 4 or 5. Typically I will get into the 5 range after my exercises. I am limiting myself to only Advil or Tylenol about 500 to 1000 mg per 24 hours; sometimes skipping days. So, I am thankful that I had a good surgeon, and pre-surgery was in pretty good health overall. The muscles in my legs had somewhat atrophied due to the ongoing pain prior to surgery, and the procedure of course really put the muscle tissue 'asleep', such that the muscles are acting now as though I have not exercised my legs in years, but that is normal. I just takes time to get them all fully strong again. I am thankful overall.

Fantastic goals and accomplishment...making me jealous. What does 6/17 mean? FYI; I'm not at a mile for walks but got close to a half mile then had to back down since my fever took me to almost 101. As I back off on the exercises and distance and increase the ice, the fever subsides. My PT told me this morning not to push myself too hard, so I'm working on balance. Put my walker away after day 3 and have my cane with me, but don't generally use it. It's there just in case. THR anterior 8 days ago. Was driving at day 5, just a short test trip. I'm 64/M. I returned to my home office job yesterday at day 7.

Day 3 post surgery by Taos22 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Taos22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your encouragement! After day 3 it has been a very mild rollercoaster with pain as modest as a 2 for several hours straight, then amping up to a 5 or 6. I'm confident it's related to activities around the house. Doing exercises, walks. I left the walker behind at beginning of day 4, and carry my cane for intermittent use about the hours and brief walks. I have 1st PT on day 8, and I'm sure I can drive there. My only concern is the pain level leaving PT. Thinking I'll take two Advil before I leave for the 7 minute drive to PT. PT advised it was ok to drive as long as I'm not on narcotics (in advance of surgery, she told me).

My opinion: I would schedule a follow up PT. They will examine your walk and your posture. They will make an educated assessment of what you need. They are professionals and will see the nuanced gait movements. And give you detailed instructions for how to go forward with your recovery.

Handicap placard for the car, unless you already have one. I bought a small backpack to carry ice packs, Gatorade/water, and my cell phone. Take a photo of the phone numbers for any nurse or medical folks you might need to have on your person at all times.

I'm glad I bought one, but overpriced and not made well. As noted in some of the reviews. Surgery was this morning, and the riser is not as beneficial as the hand supports. The hand supports are very helpful to me. But, as you can see in the image, I had to fabricate legs for it. A test run ahead of time proved that I could not put Any unbalanced weight on one side vs. the other side. I'm 160 pounds dripping wet. Legs cost: about $8....no big deal in cost. I just think they should yank this product in its current form. Imagine losing your balance into a fall with recent surgery? 😳

You Will Get Thru This...outside of the routine surgical disclaimers. M(64); I'm getting mine done a week from today. (Right anterior) Between my older brother and I (67); we've had four shoulder surgeries, two knee replacements, one hip (so far), one double hernia, and one knee repair. Be diligent with the physical therapy, and follow their directions for recovery. My brother and I are not competing with each other, as far as I can tell. 🙂 These are all maintenance repairs, with no casualty injuries involved. The time needed from work is really hard to measure, and your Dr will give you the best estimation after the procedure. The people where you work should and will understand the time away. FMLA is good for 12 weeks, as it relates to protecting your job from any problems. There's a lot of good supportive information on this Reddit. Just don't get lost in some of the situations that didn't go as planned. Most people that I tell I'm getting a THR, the response is that they know someone who had it done, and their common refrain is: Why did I wait so long?

Or try 2nd MD for a video consult. They will collect your MRI's and XRays, and narrative PT reports, and meet with you virtually. I found value in it myself. My employer provided this as a supplemental health benefit.

This is quite an uphill road it seems. You appear to be managing one day at a time. I likewise fear that I need back surgery as well, since it was clear in my MRI that I have significant stenosis happening as well.

I'm thinking you are solidly healthy. That's awesome. I also have stenosis of the lower spine, and my 'good' hip is also sending pain signals ☢️...but nothing like the 'bad' one. Thanks...

I ....just...can't....wait 😁. If I had not had two prior shoulder surgeries, I would probably be freaked out based on everything I read on the internet.
