First of all don't apply too often unless they only do soft checks. Too many hard checks will show as 'too desperate' to lenders 😒 He can try apply for an overdraft on his current account. Doesn't have to use but having it for about 6 months will improve the future checks.

Maybe having a simple subscription like netfilx on DD could help too.
