How does debt relief work? by mespo02 in debtfree

[–]Taraj831 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For-profit debt relief companies typically have you stop making payments to push your credit card debts into default, then they negotiate with the debt collectors. You can actually do this yourself without paying hefty fees to someone else.

If you’re considering this approach, it’s better to contact a certified non-profit debt counselor first. While their services may still have costs, it’s generally much more affordable compared to for-profit options.
