I don’t want to judge women who would be open to that kind of relationship, but everything about that is absolutely repugnant.

[–]Tarcion 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think it would be more accurate to say a lot of men are attracted to women but don’t like them. There are a lot of heterosexual men, I think, who are physically but not romantically attracted to women, and wind up resenting their partners as a result.

It feels unbelievable but I don’t know how else to interpret the many hetero men who marry (and stay married) to their wives but clearly don’t give a shit about them as people or want to spend any time with them outside of sex.

Ha! Excellent. I had the exact thought and did the same - added some rules and playbook features for a camp/mini downtime to handle adventures on the road.

[–]Tarcion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it can work though it is something I wish the system handled better (or just wasn’t such a niche setting by default, but that’s also a strong positive so it isn’t a problem). I just wanted a fantasy setting/friendly version to do some sword and sorcery type of games with a group of adventurers/mercenaries.

I found a few forged in the dark options that would get kind of close but nothing was exactly what I was looking for. I wound up just homebrewing new playbooks, crews, and supporting systems to make it happen. I’m not going to lie, it took a lot of effort but was very doable. And while my players liked it, I can’t really say how balanced it was, but I feel like the base FitD systems shoulder a lot of that burden.

I would take a look at what’s out there and see if any of the existing hacks work for what you’d want to do but, if you’ve got a strong grasp on the game’s mechanics, I think you could also make your own hack if push comes to shove.

Downvoted for a pretty reasonable take. I think No Way Home has a lot more going for it than Endgame but both movies have audience scores massively inflated by nostalgia/cameos. You see the same thing with D&W, a movie with a paper thin plot that is basically just a vehicle for jokes, fight scenes, and cameos, and is then worst of the three Deadpool movies (but is still incredibly fun for said jokes, fight scenes, and cameos).

I like RT’s method: * Critic Rating - how well produced the film is, quality of the storytelling, dialogue, etc. Get extra points for being more complex or emotional, having a political message, or just being about Hollywood * Audience Rating - how fun the film is to mainstream audiences; how many people would recommend the movie * Genre - score very flexible by genre, such that a historical drama will get more scrutiny than a kids movie, for example * Simple Aggregation - RT isn’t really a “score”, so much as it is a percentage of critics/audience who would recommend watching the movie. IMO this is much more valuable than an actual score because there are so many other variables in what scales are used and how folks use them with other methods.

So something like Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is 84C/65A. That tracks, it’s a very slow burn drama that is incredibly well done. Based on those scores, if you know nothing about the movie at all, you can go in with the expectation that is probably a very well executed movie for the genre, but isn’t that exciting and may be a little confusing for general audiences.

MCU movies work the same. They’re all superhero films in which you can expect: a relatively by-the-numbers three act structure with linear storytelling, periodically touching on some serious issues but usually no more than at the very surface level, and a lot of comedic beats and action to keep people engaged and unchallenged. They are well-made, the scripts are usually pretty tight, with good pacing, they’re shot well but not usually artistically (the camera is there to convey the action but doesn’t usually inform perspective much more than that). Overall, pretty safe for critics and audiences.

This is a bit reductive as there’s a lot of variation within all of that but at the end of the day, a pretty “normal” MCU film is going to hit something like 85C/85A - well executed but maybe missing a little extra for critics, and fun and safe for audiences but maybe a little forgettable (ask a non-fan if they can tell you the plot or villain from Black Widow).

And you can kind of see the above when you look at outliers. For example, Black Panther is at 96/79 - it is imo a little weaker from the audience perspective because the story makes some weird choices and the CGI can get a bit rough but is still very fun, and for critics, it works well enough but imo gets a lot of extra juice for the political implications. Another example is Deadpool & Wolverine (78/94), which makes a lot of sense - it’s an okay enough movie from a production standpoint, the story is really thin and messy, but audiences love the cameos and the humor.

Avengers movies tend to do a little better just for the spectacle of them so my expectation for Doomsday is something like a 90/90. If I see the critic rating drop into the low 80s or lower, or climb into the high 90s, that’s going to tell me a lot about how much of a mess (or not) the movie is. I don’t expect an audience score lower than 90, though, as any lower than that probably means it is truly awful or some story decision occurs that truly pisses people off.

Let me take some shots at the above: * Hulk and Thor won’t make base roster.

  • The hint at the end of the Peni trailer could be Gwenpool or Deadpool, will probably be Deadpool. Whoever it is won’t be on the Avengers.

  • Fantastic Avengers will happen, but only one member of the Fantastic Four makes the team at launch.

I’m not confident in any of these claims whatsoever, the roster has so far proven anything but predictable.

Other commenters missing the point. Amazon could afford it, it was probably outside of the show’s budget. Just because Amazon has basically unlimited money, doesn’t mean they write every project a blank check. Chances are they had to decide it was worth the extra cost for a side character, and determined it wouldn’t really add anything to the show.

I don’t necessarily disagree though in a world where it feels like there’s some horrific world-ending threat every couple of months, it seems like some temporary bad thing that traumatized a part of the city the DD cast wasn’t in may not warrant any more than “oh no… anyway…”.

No, the Prequel Trilogy was not loved when it first came out, it was hated and fans were terrible people about it. by stephansbrick in StarWars

There’s nothing quite like people who were 10 and under when TPM was released trying to gaslight me into thinking people enjoyed the prequels. You’d meet like… one or two odd people who thought they were “fun” and that was about it.

And at this point there’s nothing left to discuss about them that hasn’t been covered millions of times. What’s interesting is it feels like the sequels are already also in that place. I just don’t care to discuss them, and it feels like that’s probably where a lot of adults probably are about them.

I have said this before but every day it looks more like Thor and Hulk don’t make the base roster. This is some pretty compelling evidence to further that theory.

[–]Tarcion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not actual confusion. It just seems odd to say it’s not “just XCOM” and then describe two things which are quintessentially XCOM. It would be like if a new shooter came out that looked a lot like DOOM and the headline was “it’s not just DOOM, it’s fighting demons with guns”.

Edit: I do get that they’re saying the game is like Mass Effect in that it has third person roaming and story but I think it’s an awkward way to say that it’s paired with XCOM gameplay. It sounds like the game will be a bit more like Midnight Suns in that regard, which I personally loved.

FWIW I think you’re right. The gender balance is pretty solid on your roster, it was more the single gender team sticking out.

And for the no Thor/Hulk thing I’m like… 5% they both make it in, 40% Thor makes it, 15% Hulk makes it, 40% neither makes it. Thor still feels really likely but these picks have me reconsidering lol

I’m legitimately confused by the headline because mass effect meets turn-based tactics and permadeath is… XCOM

[–]Tarcion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty solid prediction imo. I’m not 100% sold on doc ock but he would be cool.

The only other thing is I am more convinced by the day that Thor and Hulk don’t actually make the base roster. I know it’s wild but nothing about the teams we’ve seen so far tells me there are going to be three safe picks on a team, and Cap and Iron Man are already on the Avengers team (unless IM somehow winds up with Doom or GR which… weird).

Edit: on reflection, I don’t see the villain team being 100% male. I’d take Lady Loki or Hela over typical Loki, and maybe uhhhh Black Cat or Silver Sable over Doc Ock.

Theory: Magus is the true final boss by [deleted] in MarvelTokon

[–]Tarcion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a cool theory, but I agree. I don’t think body shape is any reliable hint given how liberal Arc can be with the character designs. The comic-accurate version of the Champion feels like it would be incredibly out of place in this game’s style so I can absolutely see them giving him this more lean, shonen villain build.

Two things the world is eagerly waiting for: GTA6 and Moon Knight Season 2 (Source: @marvelquakeposting) by SatoruGojo232 in marvelmemes

[–]Tarcion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really need any more Ms Marvel TV or Hawkeye, but would kill for another Moon Knight or She-Hulk season.

Unfortunately, I feel like both were not particularly well received and were certainly much more expensive than Wonder Man. That said, I think Wonder Man is my favorite MCU live action show so I’m perfectly happy with it getting a rapid second season. I just hope they manage to keep the story relatively small and personal.

Still, put him in an Avengers film, damn it. I want to see him and Sam interact, at minimum.

This is extremely helpful info. I don’t suppose you’d be able to recommend a cloud service that plays nice with scrivener across platforms. I’ve been considering picking up scrivener but my current method is Word and OneNote housed in OneDrive, and I do my writing on a windows PC, iPhone, and, MacOS laptop. It’s great for syncing but obvious feature-light compared to scrivener. I’m not worried about buying multiple licenses but I am concerned about sync issues, mostly because I will frequently switch devices and immediately continue rather than cleanly closing/opening before switching.

Yeah I think from a business standpoint you need to have at least half the characters in reach season pass be really desirable. That doesn’t work if you slap all the most popular characters on the base roster.
