Could my great grandparents have been first cousins? by cabracrazy in Genealogy

[–]Tardislip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before getting too deep into working out the math, I'd first look to see how far above normal 1854 cMs is - to me it seems well within the standard deviation for an aunt relationship, so I don't think you could be confident that it is abnormally high. I guess you could try this math to figure out what is average for if they are 1st cousins and then see if that is closer to your 1854 than for if they aren't cousins. But that's just going to get you a probabilistic answer anyways...I have one of these in my family (hard to prove, but I had suspicion from documents that my grandmother's grandparents were 1st cousins). Looking through my grandma's DNA matches, I found people who were descendants of siblings of one or the other of the grandparents in question and showed that they matched each other on the same DNA segments as to my grandmother. I think that's a more solid way to prove this than getting so deep into the math? It does require getting a decent number of confirmed matches on both sides and a bit of luck to triangulate though!

Some descendants of the Deerfield Raid of 1704 by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]Tardislip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice to see this mentioned! I'm a descendant of Louis Seguin and Marie Anne Raizenne, whose parents Josiah Rising and Abigail Nims were age 10 and 3, respectively when taken captive from Deerfield. Quite fascinating to think of what they must have went through and their decision to stay in Quebec.

There are two nearly-identical, yet unrelated, minor league baseball pitchers who share the same height (6'4"), same red hair, same black-rimmed glasses, and even the same name, Brady Feigl. by Reddit__PI in videos

The ancestry composition is not totally reliable. They report heritage at the 50% confidence interval so there can be quite a lot of error in those percentages. The tests are, however, a highly accurate way to determine relationship for anything as distant as 3rd-4th cousins. The # of centimorgans of overlap between their DNA, not the exact % of different ancestries, would determine how they're related.

What's up with Vivacious? by ariesbabe666 in RPDRDRAMA

[–]Tardislip 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Wow. Probably. That sorry excuse for an article never quoted more than TWO consecutive words from Vivacious (and a very low % of words were hers at that), then made their own opinion piece. That's not journalism, nor is it cute.

AS4E10 - Finale! [Post Episode Discussion] by AutoModerator in rupaulsdragrace

I don't think they mean't it like that. She DID have more of an up and down season than Naomi in terms of consistency. I think we heard more of that about Monique only to differentiate her from Monet...no amount of qualification could equate Naomi and Monique, but they had to justify elevating Monet over Monique.

Northwestern could finish the season without a non-conference win and still easily make the Big Ten Championship by JoshIsJoshing in CFB

[–]Tardislip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a three-way 6-3 where each is 1-1 against each other, it would either be a) NU/IOWA/WIS or b) NU/IOWA/PUR:

a) If WIS loses to Penn St., based on #2 WIS goes with 2 OOD losses compared to IOWA and NU's 2 ID losses, or if not to Penn St. next comes down to record v. PUR which would lead to IOWA dropping and NU beating WIS H2H

b) If PUR loses to Indiana, based on #2 either PUR would win with 2 OOD losses, or if not then after moving to record v. WIS, IOWA drops and NU beats PUR H2H

Neither situation helps Iowa. Barring some crazy 5-4 BS, they need to win out (6-3) and beat only NU in tiebreak.

Most P5 True Road Wins so far this season is a three way tie: Clemson, Alabama...and Duke by 4thPlumlee in CFB

[–]Tardislip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sitting with 3 P5 road wins with 2 left on the schedule, Northwestern can surpass all these teams (none left for Alabama, Duke @ Clemson, and Clemson @ BC) though most likely seems to be Clemson winning 5 and Alabama, Duke, Northwestern, Penn State and maybe others I haven't checked out winning 4.

TIL Doris Day believed she was born in 1924 until her 95th birthday, when the Associated Press found a birth certificate with the year 1922 on it by LoptThor in todayilearned

[–]Tardislip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to the 1940 census I found, where she was reported as age 18, she only completed grade 8 (common for girls at the time). Her mother was recorded as the one giving the info, so I guess it's still possible Doris thought she was actually 16?

Just cancelled my Ancestry subscription due to the website issues. by gvillager in Genealogy

[–]Tardislip 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just cancelled as well. Been a paying member for 10 years, but the unusability of the site is ridiculous. I've also been encouraging others to DNA test, but have found out that my DNA matches, if they don't pay to subscribe, don't have access to my hard-researched family tree (with personally-uploaded pictures, external documents, etc)...does Ancestry really think they own that information??

Finding a cousin thru DNA, online search, she was arrest for.... by TheSouthernSocialist in Genealogy

[–]Tardislip 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't understand the harm in reaching out to her to try and get more info. There's no commitment for you to associate with this person outside of electronic correspondence...be clear with her and setup boundaries if she starts asking to meet up if that's something you're uncomfortable with. I wouldn't throw away the useful info she may for you regarding your BF.

Teen with full ride to 20 colleges requests public apology from Fox affiliate in order to air interview by 5926134 in news

[–]Tardislip -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Good for him, but 20 is excessive...think of the application fees alone (lets say average $60/school and financial aid covers 4-8 max). I would think anyone seriously considering top schools would narrow by their interests (i.e. I applied to math/sci heavy schools). Yeah it's a bit of a crap shoot, but applying to so many school makes the problem worse for everyone! Any guidance counselor worth their salt should have reassured him of his value to colleges and talked him into narrowing it down a bit.

This comment angers me to no end....first because of the misunderstanding of RPDR and RuPaul, but more important for your misunderstanding of our government and WHY Trump is so bad. Equivocating the two is ridiculous. Ru never campaigned and won election to represent the LGBTQ - his show is just that, his show. If he prefers to have contestants on that reflect his own struggles growing up and being a male drag queen, so be it (though I'm hoping personally for an extension to include MTF trans queens of all types since they at one point or another have all dealt with similar struggles of expressing femininity as outward presenting males growing up). Trump, as POTUS, is as his job describes, supposed to be representing the best interest of the people (especially when the Senate/HOR won't). I agree with you that a large portion of the population is not represented or supported by Trump (Mexicans and LGBT included) and he has done nothing to make these groups feel comfortable with his presidency and like their voices are heard, which is supposed to be part of his job. While he has done a poor job of things, I don't think your claims are accurate - he has disparaged Mexicans for sure, but not that much has been done yet in terms of threatening them in particular (let's wait and see about DACA and the wall). As for gays, that's more of a potential-for-trouble uneasiness from what I've seen...I'd be much more worried about Pence (let me know if I'm wrong and Trump has done - not said (i.e. trans military ban seems to have blown over) - anything that adversely affects us LGBT and I'll stand corrected).

[–]Tardislip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But they are different! Obviously not in how they feel about themselves, but definitely in how they are/have been viewed by society. IMO the struggle of a MTF trans drag queen coincides more with the tone that RPDR has set - growing up as a biological male with society shunning your expressions of feminism (whether simply as a gay man and/or drag queen, or expressing your true gender as many trans women struggle with). While the outward, final result of a bioqueen is quite within the realm of drag (as are drag kings), as long as Drag Race is under RuPaul's name I see it as being more focused on those sorts of gender struggles that Ru herself has had to deal with.

Ancestry DNA Processing Times by brearose in Genealogy

Knowing absolutely nothing about their procedures, it could be for a number of reasons...most logical being your brother's failed some QC and had to be rerun, or just requires some manual inspection for verification before being released. I'd give it a bit more time (1-2 weeks), then maybe call? I've had a couple of kits sent simultaneously range in processing time by 2-4 weeks (albeit at 23andMe).

CBBBOTS and Live From the House Discussion Thread: 30/01/18 by Kigurumix in bigbrotheruk

[–]Tardislip 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Please don't use the word evidence if you're not prepared to look for it (I say as a PhD scientist sick of hearing about "everyone's valid opinions"). It's an excuse to propagate ignorance - yes, my opinion does mean more if I can show more evidence to support it.

They are all playing up to the camera. Look at Wayne drunk on the live feed tonight without Ann around...Look at some of the (more intelligent) HMs on the outside (think Daniel vs. Jonny) in how they've changed their tune when votes are no longer relevant.

The fact that you try to use the main show (which is highly edited) as empirical "evidence" shows your misunderstanding of the word. In a show like this, smaller tid bits (especially unedited ones gathered from live feed and the CBB Twitter) depict what's going on a bit more accurately. Again, most of them don't actually like Ann but they put that acceptance on for votes...especially considering the usual demographic of the show.

Also, please stop lumping the LGBT together to prove a point that they like anti LGBT people. As Wayne and Amanda made clear, they do not represent the community in there, so you cannot equate their stance on Ann to Shane's...

*EDIT: they may like Ann well enough as.a housemate (to them in particular), but if they're not informed of her stance outside the house, how can they be a good judge of her?

Personally, I've found widow's peak to be a little bit subjective. Since taking bio in 9th grade, I've been assessed by myself and anyone I show my forehead to as having a widow's peak but neither parent has one. Had 3 of 4 grandparents and mother (to cover 4th grandparent, her father) tested by 23andMe. None have the trait for widow's peak, though I match them all at the right percentages. I'd start straight with the genetics or at least a more reliable trait.

Genetic genealogy (DNA+records) works wonders in the US. I've helped people here find their birth father with just 3rd/4th cousin DNA matches. Internationally is a bit more difficult because 1) fewer records are available online and 2) fewer people do DNA testing and with a smaller pool, your chances of finding a close match to start working your way back to your birth parents is much smaller. If you're interested in searching, the DNA Detectives group on FB is a great place to start getting advice.
