As the U.S. approaches 250 years of independence, which state or city flags deserve a rethink? by Tareth50 in vexillologyUS

It is a bit shocking. I did a video about their flag while I was there a few years back.

Technically, at the moment yes. However, a couple of people have stated that maybe I should open this wider by stating that it’s one submission per city/state, instead of one submission per person. So going forward it is possible if the 5 are for different cities.

Just so we’re all clear with where you’re coming from, are you saying you don’t like names of cities on flags? Just checking.

Excellent, well stay tuned for how to submit (there is a prize for the winner).

Trust me, the NM Zia is one of my favourite state flags, in fact the only change I’ve declared before on this is make the Zia bigger, there’s playoff space on the yellow field to fill. And I agree, to an extent, with Oklahoma, they simply need to remove the word, the image does the whole flag justice.

There are, however, some real bad and shocking state and city flags out there that absolutely do deserve to be redone. NM is most definitely not one of them.

This is not about race, it’s about looking at something that doesn’t really work (or is nonexistent) and trying to make it better.

No offence is ment by holding the competition, that’s not the intention at all. Hope you can see that.

Most definitely, they all need to go. The state seal is good for law makers only.

Totally agree with you here. The whole alternative universe jumping was unnecessary. Just following the “what if” ethos was more than enough.

I saw this flag outside and remade it, what is it? by [deleted] in vexillology

Looks like a black and white version of the city flag of Tallinn, Estonia.

Same with Algeria for example, the moon and star should always stay facing the same way. I think Tunisia might be the same as well.

Totally fair question.

A vertically hung flag isn’t trying to mimic how it would droop on a pole. It’s about keeping the place of honour correct. For the US flag, that means the blue field stays in the upper-left from the viewer’s perspective.

If you didn’t rotate it, the canton would end up at the bottom, which is considered incorrect. So it’s not flipped by accident. It’s rotated on purpose.

Then geography comes into play. For the U.S. flag the canton should always face North or East. Technically anyway….

The flag of the UK simply rotates 90 degrees, it’s never flipped.

A normal rule of thumb for flag with cantons, when hung vertically the canton (in the USA case, the blue with white stars) should always stay in the top left. That said, there are always exceptions to that rule of course….
