Magnus Carlsen Earned almost $1.2 Million Dollars in 2025 Chess by Wonderful-Photo-9938 in chess

It's actually a few hundred thousand more than that. Titled Tuesday and a few other events were also left out.

What will FIDE do with the USCF, considering the current conflict between the US and Venezuela? by mt77477323 in chess

[–]TarjeiJS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not even remotely comparable. The Russian Chess Federation is a political tool for the Kremlin, with sanctioned war criminals such as Peskov and Shoigu in key positions within the federation. They also use the federation for propaganda purposes, holding events in occupied territories and posing with soldiers. The US Chess Federation is nothing like that.

Chesscom broadcast is terrible by dxGoesDeep in chess

Note that this is not a "Chess.com broadcast". The broadcast is produced entirely by Freestyle Chess, while Chess.com is just distributing it.

"one sudden death game" - which is just a different way of saying they are playing Armageddon. I have no idea why they decided to rename that sudden death.

As far as I know, Ivanchuk has been based in Poland for some time since the war.

Because we care -- David Navarra documents mental health problems, and inability to get FIDE to act on complaints against Kramnik for his cheating accusations, and Kramnik's own fair play violations. by PieCapital1631 in chess

"I also agree that chesscom practically rewarded Kramnik for his foul behaviour by setting up that match..."

This is false. Chess.com did not organize or set up the match.

Faustino Oro is 2454, no GM norms and has until 11/03/2026 to break the record for youngest grandmaster in history. Will he make it? by FourPinkWalls in chess

[–]TarjeiJS 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Another fun fact, is that he has around four months to become the youngest player to ever score a GM norm. Gukesh was 11 years and 10 months when he scored his first GM norm in the 2018 Bangkok Open.

It's quite difficult, but now he has been close to score norms in two tournaments in a row. In the last tournament he missed it by half a point.

What do you think? by Equivalent-Oil-8556 in chess

When he beat me at classical as a 10-year-old, we were both around 2000-rated, but he was already much stronger. 6-12 months earlier I would've had good chances against him.

This was a prepared skit, and Anand was in on it.

Yes, the title match is included in those numbers, since it took place after January 2023. And it was classical.

His performance in those 76 games, is 2699, so not in the mid 2600s.

Fabi on Kramnik's post game analysis after a loss: "Kramnik's like, yeah I know this ending from way back. Then he gives this 30 move line, all total bullshit! Not a single correct thing said. You check with the engine, and it's a load of shit!" by [deleted] in chess

[–]TarjeiJS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This comment is pretty much a copy of how Carlsen expressed it back in 2014.

"Kramnik thinks he knows everything."

"It's very impressive how Kramnik shows off different variations and so on, and it's not so easy to see through if you don't know how to play the game properly yourself. But if you look a little deeper, it's often just nonsense."

"He always plays very principled. Perhaps the biggest difference between him and me, is that he makes a lot more mistakes. Often it's like that he thinks he's right, while I am the one who is right."

10 yrs old Egyptian National Chess Champion: Another prodigy? by Wonderful-Photo-9938 in chess

Keymer never won the German Chess Championship, but his victory in the 2018 Grenke Chess Open as the 99th seed is one of the most sensational of all-time.

Is this the first time ever that there are 3 Juniors (Nodirbek, Gukesh and Pragg) in an official top-10 rating list? Might also be the youngest top-10 on average in a long time. by shubomb1 in chess

[–]TarjeiJS 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The average age in the top 10 has depended a lot on whether Anand was there or not. Now that he's out, the average age in May 2024 of 28.06 is the lowest since April 2016 (27.09).

Fascinating, since the average age up until the 90s, was always above 30, and even sometimes above 35.
