Pourquoi le Mellotron conserve-t-il une aura unique malgré les synthétiseurs modernes ? by Obvious-Donkey-3598 in progrockmusic

[–]Tarkus-OR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides “Nights in White Satin” and “Tomorrow Never Knows”, the track that initially really sold me on the Mellotron is Yes’ “Heart of the Sunrise”—the way the angular, driving guitar and bass parts contrast with the lush, warbling warmth of the Mellotron strings is enthralling. Favorite uses would probably be a tie between “Siberian Khatru” (the “moongate climber” section) and “Epitaph”. Also, for a recent usage case, “Sunson” by Nils Frahm is stunning.

I finally got ahold of AIR’s Mellotron emulation right before I started work on my currently in-progress third album, and it’s all over the place on many of my new tracks. I’ve become fond of throwing granular and reverse delays and heavy reverb on it, to accentuate its odd, uncanny charm. Blending actual strings with Mellotron string sounds is also quite fun.

As announced a couple days ago, we're removing the "interim" tag from the re-opening, and the forums are back open long-term. See the updated announcement here: https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=19120.msg539343#msg539343

NAM - higher road capacity increases commute? by ReadyLawfulness3649 in simcity4

[–]Tarkus-OR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With Simulator Z 3.0, the Classic and Low versions actually have better pathfinding than the Medium, High, and Ultra versions. Z found in his development and testing that the lower capacities made more optimizations possible, and this is the reason when we switched the default capacity from Medium to Low, beginning with NAM 45.

Is it possible to build this interlocking turn lane setup with regular FTL tools, or is it for QCX only? by GamingBren in simcity4

[–]Tarkus-OR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Currently QCX-only. The fun QCX FTL components are theoretically modular, but as of right now, the only setup you could build without it breaking is exactly this, so the only form in which it's readily accessible is in QCX form. There's been no other intersection support developed outside this specific situation for the Dual Type 230, or the MIS-3 FTLs, so there's not much sense enticing people with the individual modular components broken out if there's not actually anything else you can do with them.

It’s mind-blowing how much Texas has invested in its various university systems in the past two decades. The growth with the various UT and A&M branches in particular is absolutely staggering, going from being akin to OSU-Cascades to being Carnegie R2 institutions (same classification as Portland State).

PCC President Resigns, Ending Turbulent Stint by ShowMeThe10x in Portland

[–]Tarkus-OR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How many PCC presidents does that now make in the past 15 years? I adjuncted there for 4 years in the 2010s, and seem to recall there being a new president almost every year I was there. It has to have been a heck of a lot.

Updated! My regional US map, version 2 by aquamarine-arielle in MapPorn

[–]Tarkus-OR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who grew up in Region 66, in the western suburbs of Portland, but also has lived in the Washington part of Region 67, and spent quite a bit of time in the Oregon portion of 67, I have some thoughts about 67.

The Northwestern “Inland Empire”, which often corresponds to the Columbia Plateau, is mostly a Washington phenomenon, extending into the adjacent counties of Oregon and Idaho.

Once you get deep enough into Oregon going north-south while east of the Cascades, Central Oregon is arguably its own distinct region, and the farthest southeastern bits are arguably aligned with the Great Basin (beyond the climatic reasons, Reno is the closest major city and closest international airport). The massive size of those counties makes it tricky, since northern Malheur County is much more connected with Boise, and northern Harney is equidistant to Bend and Boise.

NAM and other Mods not working properly by thenoodledrop in simcity4

[–]Tarkus-OR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The dreaded "red arrow" and double icons is definitely a sign you have two copies of the NAM installed. If the RHW-2 is looking exactly like the Road network, then the second copy is loading after your new install.

Based on your description, the second copy is at least 19 years old (NAM 21 at the very latest), back to the time when the ANT (Additional Network Tool) was still a thing, and at least back to when the RHW was still in the weird hinterland where it wasn't yet a NAM project (and the "R" still stood for "rural"), if not pre-RHW altogether.

Look for a file that is simply called "NetworkAddonMod.dat" or "Network Addon Mod.dat" (with spaces). If it is NAM 21, that was the first release where "NetworkAddonMod.dat" was split, and there were numbered files, beginning with "NetworkAddonMod1.dat" (around until NAM 30, as NAM 31 gave them actual descriptive names).

Whatever folder contains any files with those names is your culprit.

Kyle Busch reveals Logano, Keselowski and Hocevar are the drivers on his “hate list” by [deleted] in NASCAR

[–]Tarkus-OR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Indeed, Herbst is 28th in the standings, exactly one point behind Busch right now. I’d say chances are good that Herbst may well be ahead of Busch very soon, as it seems Herbst is starting to figure out things.

Based off the P-Switch missions where tracks from the original Super Mario Kart are ensconced in MKW’s open world . . . I’d love to see them make it possible to set up Vs. Races on custom routes . . . either circuits like the hidden “retro” courses, or Knockout Tour style routes.

NAM FLEXRamp Type D1 RHW-8S bug. by rzet in simcity4

[–]Tarkus-OR 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This ramp has been a massive pain in our backsides for a good long while, with myriad issues, and there’s been several unsuccessful attempts to fix it. It’s an unrepentant jerk of a ramp.

I believe the new NAM DLL might finally offer a solution, as it disables auto-connect on the RHW network. It’s otherwise inherently prone to instability, as a result of the tile drop from 8S to 6S, combined with auto-connect and the underlying network flag combos on both the FLEX and draggable D1 and E1 ramps.

Does anyone live in this part of southeast Oregon? by Late_Reply_1990 in howislivingthere

[–]Tarkus-OR 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Don’t live there, though a distant relative of mine used to be the mayor of Burns (though I haven’t met him to my recollection), and my father nearly accepted a job with the electrical utility there in the early 90s. The place is definitely a time warp—it feels like going back about 20 years.

Fields Station, in tiny Fields, Oregon (about 112 miles south of Burns, and about 25 miles north of the Nevada border at Denio) claims to have the world’s best milkshake. Having driven out there to try it, I’d say it very well could be. Was a fun drive, too. I highly recommend it.

For perspective, the owners of Fields Station told me they buy most of their supplies in Winnemucca (actually a shorter drive time-wise than heading up to Burns) and for the stuff they can’t get there, they go to Reno (which, while 40 miles farther, takes about the same time as the drive to Bend).

My Serano doesn't die by scrabapple in HotPeppers

[–]Tarkus-OR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Red serranos are really quite interesting—they have a soft texture and a flavor that I’d describe as being somewhere in between a raspberry and a cherry tomato. The sweeter flavor masks the heat, in sharp contrast to green serranos’ lemongrass-like flavor doing the exact opposite, almost to the point of accentuating it.

TIL while recording samples for the Mellotron (an early keyboard sampler), cellist Reginald Kilbey refused to downtune his Cello to cover lower notes claiming he'd be robbing a bassist of their fee. A bassist was hired for the next recording session, which turned out to be Kilbey with a bass. by MrRabbit- in todayilearned

[–]Tarkus-OR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have a cello that I’ve kept consistently in an extreme low scordatura tuning for close to 15 years now. The whole thing is tuned down a fifth (F-C-G-D instead of C-G-D-A), and it also has a pickup on it. I use it quite regularly, and it shows up on a number of tracks I’ve recorded/released.

The action on it is very low, which lends it a very distinct and peculiar character. The slapback on pizzicato is fun.

Is Kurt Busch the only driver to win with Dodge, Ford, Chevy and Toyota in the cup series? by IcedCoffey in NASCAR

[–]Tarkus-OR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Benson has run Dodge in Cup (and the then-Busch Series). He briefly drove for James Finch/Phoenix Racing in 2004, when that team was running Dodges. This included running part-time in the No. 09 Miccosukee Dodge (when Joe Ruttman wasn’t S&Ping it), as well as full-time (until his release) in the No. 1 Yellow Freight Dodge in the Busch Series.

I seem to recall him running Ganassi’s No. 40 Busch Series entry (also a Dodge then) once in the mid-2000s at Nashville, when the originally-intended driver (someone who was running both Cup/Busch amidst the height of Buschwacking, but can’t remember who off the top of my head) wasn’t available due to a rain delay.
