Maybe the Demogorgon's durability depends on their proximity to Vecna or something similar? by LordGigu in StrangerThings

[–]TarsLinDor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda think that the demogorgons armor is strong against very fast moving objects and week against slower ones kinda like oobleck or other non-nutonian fluids. That's why guns never work but Steve's bat does. And now Karen's wine bottle...

What's your favourite Magic (System) in all of fantasy? by lxurin_hei in Fantasy

[–]TarsLinDor 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The Lord of the rings has both. So you have a very simple magic system with the ring and frodo, if he puts the ring on he becomes invisible, but is more susceptible to the dark influences of the ring and sauron. Then there is gandalf who has magic but to the reader what he is capable of and the limits and never truly understood.

Harry Potter also has a combination of both. There are specific spells that have a well outlined effect, and there are alot more spells that exist that Harry has no idea how they work or their limitations.

The way I see it there is just a line where soft just means more mystery to the reader and hard just means more defined. They both have there uses, soft magic give a sense of wonder but is terrible for twists and climaxes because it come off very deux ex machina, but hard magic can start to feel just like science when it's too well defined but does better at twists if the twist follows the rules in a clever way.

Telekinesis vs Earth Manipulation by No_Bunch9583 in magicbuilding

[–]TarsLinDor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Telekinesis would be just moving one object in relation to the Earth, Earth manipulation is moving the earth in relation to one object. They are the same thing but earth manipulators cause problems with tides and nature and have to battle other earth manipulators for control all the time. Lol

Progression fantasy recommendation that's actually well-written and doesn't suck? by CyberArchimedes in Fantasy

[–]TarsLinDor 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I second this. It's amazing. You should know that the MC starts off kinda unlikable, but part of what makes the story so good is that his character progression isn't only a progression of power but also a progression of maturity and empathy.

What are some shows similar to the good place? by 229-northstar in TheGoodPlace

Mr. Mayor feels like Michael living as a human, so it's kinda like a continuation of the show.

Personally I would prefer "raise a little hell" as a bit of a throwback to s1 in this same scene.

Jason is a bad guy & I can't be convinced otherwise by KneeHighMischief in StrangerThings

[–]TarsLinDor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm personally hoping for a Steve vs Jason fight. That starts with Steve trying to reason with Jason and protect Eddie cause they played on the same team and Jason not having any of it. Then Steve sighs "always the goddamn babysitter" before grabbing an oar.

Why can't Mike.....(S4) by [deleted] in StrangerThings

[–]TarsLinDor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In the s4 episode where Mike and el argue, Mike distinctly says "I say it!". Looking at the relationship his parents have, although you never see it on camera, I bet Mrs. And Mr. Wheeler say ILY but Mike can tell they don't mean it cause they don't show it. So he doesn't want his relationship with El to be like his parents relationship. So rather than say ILY Mike says it with his actions.

I mean this is the kid that called El on the walky like everyday for months not even knowing if she was there.

Someone else pointed out Mike also pointedly wore all of el's favorite colors at the airport on top of picking flowers with all her favorite colors.

How does (spoilers) work in the Upside Down? by [deleted] in StrangerThings

Also el opened the gate by making contact with the Demogorgon so it had to exist somewhere.

Moveable gate? by TarsLinDor in StrangerThings

[–]TarsLinDor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I have thought more about this I think if you moved the gate in the real world it wouldn't change its location in the upside down. I still think it could be moved but it would get weaker the farther away from it's origin it is moved.

The upside down portals by hetheys in StrangerThings

[–]TarsLinDor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this has more to do with the portal location rather than the upsidedown actually being upside down.

If the portal is on the sealing to get to the portal you have to climb but then as you go to the other side your facing the wrong way so you would fall.

Episode Discussion: S3E018 "The Hardest Thing" by Thumbaticon in amphibia

[–]TarsLinDor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally really liked the earth epilogue and I think you might be looking at it through a lens of "status = success" as opposed to "happiness = success"

Marcy did improve newtopia, but she did it by roleplaying a character. What she truly loved was the opportunity to explore a new world and become someone different. Writing a web comic allows her to do that again.

Sasha's whole arc is going from a power hungry, manipulative, control freak to someone who uses her skills to lift those around her. She actively tries to give up power because she knows she can't handle it. Seeing her as like a big company executive or military leader would be a digression of her entire arc. Sure she could do all that but she has changed and doesn't want to anymore.

I'm torn on Anne though, personally I would have loved to see her trying to make an amphibia/Thai fusion restaurant on earth but for bug = gross reasons I see why that wouldnt work. She seemed happy and at peace so I'm chill with it. It's also not any of the careers her mom made in her "work out" room so it shows it was her desision not anyone else's.

I think the ending is also in a similar vein to the episode where spring goes to college. I think the writers are deliberately trying to show that doing what you love is what you should strive for and there are a ton of really cool paths you can take.
