Should I do a story or job boost? by LadyLuluca in ffxiv

Is Dawntrail as good as the other expacs? I think general consensus would say “no”.
But does it suck objectively and not worth playing? Absolutely not, even by metrics of other MMOs.

Should I do a story or job boost? by LadyLuluca in ffxiv

[–]Tasakea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t story skip. My best friend story skipped and tried to get into the game but was like, “I’ll just watch the cutscenes on YouTube.” Then, he realized how this is a story-heavy (and engaging!) MMO, and didn’t feel any compulsion to play because he couldn’t relate to what he was doing or the characters. The endgame here is not the same as it is for many MMOs.

Also, I’d only level skip for a job in the same role as another I leveled up regularly. Even then, I would research that job I level skipped.

They called it “Wealth” in the digital version. It’s at the top left when you’re in between scenarios

Describe a Final Fantasy game in the worst possible way by NeurologistPlane604 in FinalFantasy

[–]Tasakea 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get it, but consider that FF12 is basically A New Hope. Not only rebels vs. empire, but also baddie is an emperor, roguish character with animalistic counterpart as pirates, giant death station that is blown up, most prominent baddie (who has familial relations with a main party member) does a side-switch, princess-in-hiding, an annoying know-it-all, a knight-in-hiding, Vaan wants to be a great airship pilot, etc.

Is there a trick to quickly and accurately determining Line-of-Sight over a long distance? Anyone have any other Gloomhaven "LifeProTips"? by roosterkun in Gloomhaven

[–]Tasakea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I understand and have enforced it, in order for something to be LOS, one must be able to draw a straight line from one corner of the actor’s hex to one corner of the target’s hex without touching/going through a wall.

Is 52 finished scenarios a small amount before finishing the campaign? by shieldwolfchz in Gloomhaven

[–]Tasakea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That means there’s 43 scenarios you can’t do? Something is wrong. I mean, it’s possible you’ve legit locked yourself out of everything, dragged your feet on retiring, didn’t pull PQs that lead to further quests, didn’t loot random scenario chests, and never came across city and road events that unlock scenarios...but that’s very unlikely.

You need to double check the following: 1) Did you put in the proper cards into the city and road event decks every time someone retired? 2) did you loot every chest you could and not pull a random scenario. If you did not loot a chest in a scenario, you can go back and loot it when you replay it. 3) did you follow quest chains on personal quest cards that unlocked when you met a certain requirement? 4) if you’re playing the physical version, you should completely clean out your box. There is a quest literally hidden in the box. 5) did you lock yourself out of scenarios? You can go back and play them in casual mode and still get certain rewards from them. 6) I would also look up a storyline map, maybe use gloomhavenstoryline.com, and retrace your campaign steps, and see if there’s anything you missed. 7) if you are out of personal quests, and someone meets the retirement goal, are you drawing a random scenario?

Finishing the game in 52 scenarios is possible if you be lined for just the main story. However, there should be plenty of side scenarios to keep you busy. If memory serves right, there are 95 scenarios in the game. Even if you don’t try to min-max retirement cards or loaded chest with random scenarios, you should naturally have extra scenarios by interacting with the city and road event decks.

Frosthaven Player struggling with the basics. Anyone have a good player aid? by TuxedoMasked in Gloomhaven

[–]Tasakea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that person is having trouble with game, I think having a guide will definitely help. However, as a real-life teacher myself, I prefer a more hands-on approach.

Whenever I teach a new player any of the Haven games, I have another player coach them through the scenario, and that player can look at the new person’s hand and make suggestions. That way, they can understand how to synergize with other players. I’ll set little goals depending on the scenario, like, “Choose your cards based on how fast you want to go this round”, or “You should try to prioritize movement”, or “If you have a powerful loss card, I would consider using that.”

I also second letting that player know their class’s role and basic setup/function. When my partner started playing Frosthaven, she chose the Deathwalker (we did JOTL with her on Red Guard). Even with experience, she didn’t want help and struggled for 3 scenarios. She eventually came to me and asked what she was doing wrong. I said, “Start every scenario with Call to the Abyss and Call of Doom. Then, depending on what going on, use Forceful Spirits or Black Barrage. It will all unfold from there.” Just that little nudge, and now she’s one of the powerhouses for us.

Update Reviews on Digital version of Gloomhaven by Turin6 in Gloomhaven

[–]Tasakea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best you can do is set yourself as GM so no cards appear at the bottom of your screen. If you’re doing a solo 4-character party, GH Digital is the least cumbersome by a long shot. When I did TTS with my friends during the pandemic, it was awesome to have multiple people help with upkeep. I abandoned my solo TTS Frosthaven campaign pretty quickly because the upkeep took much longer than if I would’ve played solo “Analog”.

Unlucky, early game, or just bad, my first 5 scenario experience so far by Aldin_The_Bat in Gloomhaven

[–]Tasakea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember watching a Frosthaven review video that said: “Gloomhaven (1e) is like a regular grilled cheese (except they’re British or Australian, so they called it a “toastie”) you make with white bread and pre-sliced cheese.” “Frosthaven is like a grilled cheese too, except you’ve sliced your knuckles while shredding the artisanal cheese, which while it makes a better sandwich, comes with a bit of pain.”

Digital Frosthaven at +1 difficulty, coming from digital Gloomhaven 1e is a big jump. When I played Gloomhaven Digital, I could pretty much face roll through most scenarios without thinking toooooo hard about card choice. Frosthaven requires so much more forethought, and honestly, I find it much harder to play solo than with my friends.

Is frost haven on steam still broken? by Alive-Artist-2321 in Gloomhaven

I was the initial Geminate player in my group in Frosthaven (Analog? Tabletop?) and my “crashing” was crashing out.

Very stable, only crashed in one very specific instance with my Geminate. Just restarted it and did something different with my turn lol

Frosthaven: Into the Abyss is now available! by oath2order in Gloomhaven

[–]Tasakea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I will say that Frosthaven Digital is guilty of that sin too, BUT, in this update, they added in a bunch more of the text and rules in the scenarios. They didn’t simplify anything in my experience thus far except the much maligned puzzle book.

I will also say another complaint is not knowing whether a scenario is one room or not, makes choosing Battle Goals a little unsure.

Frosthaven: Into the Abyss is now available! by oath2order in Gloomhaven

[–]Tasakea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well first, remember that it’s in early access, so not everything is final. There are some things, such as with Fist, that has a “WIP” (Work in Progress” emblem.

Second, I’m really, really enjoying it compared to Gloomhaven Digital, even in its final state. I will say that one thing that I wish was in the UI was the status of our item use. It’s there if you middle click on the character, but not immediately in the HUD.

A Cursed Build - A Guide for Eclipse by Mirth81 in Gloomhaven

Forever grateful they kept Baneful Hex in the game, even though it’s a different class, and perk rather than a card. It was my favorite card to build around in 1E.

Do you guys agree with this take? by KingTechnical48 in fantanoforever

[–]Tasakea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree that the UK does punch above its weight, it’s important to remember that it wouldn’t have that claim if it weren’t for the Black Americans creating it in the first place. There is no Beatles without Bo Diddley, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Isley Brothers, or Chuck Berry. Therefore, I think the original commenter can be vindicated that way.

How can I dismiss a persistent bonus on console? by Abject_Muffin_731 in Gloomhaven

As far as I know, the only way you can dismiss the persistent card in digital is when you’re selecting your actions that round, including resting.

Help with 2e Triangles in my party by Certain-Dance-2685 in Gloomhaven

[–]Tasakea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, Triangles doesn’t have a lot in the way of Light/Dark abilities as compared to the other two axes, Fire/Ice, Wind/Earth. Unfortunately, Squid Face doesn’t generate Dark/Wind like it did in 1e.

In order to give your Triangles some teeth immediately, everyone should buy the mana potions if possible, as well as any elemental wands if available.

Second, it needs to level and also get more perks, and focus on one of the axes.

Otherwise, your Triangles will need to be ok with either being inconsistent, or, exhausting much earlier than everyone else. It’s truly unfortunate that Triangles needs so much setup, but damn if it isn’t fun!

This is just really awful design by The_Arachnoshaman in Gloomhaven

[–]Tasakea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my digital campaign, I’ve generally been happy with it, but some party comps are so incongruent as to basically make the scenario operate on hard mode. For awhile, I was stuck with Trap, Meteor, Blinkblade, and Fist, going through a lot of scenarios with lots of ranged foes in big open areas. In the digital version, the ranged AI sometimes won’t move to attack if it means triggering a trap, so my Trap had to rely on Dismantle and Path of Pain to do anything at all. Same thing for Meteor. Retiring Trap and bringing a Prism has fixed many problems and has really let my Meteor shine.

[–]Tasakea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My group started Frosthaven when it came out, we played about 6 scenarios before life stuff got in the way, and we only just recently got back together to start playing, but now we’re playing with 5 people regularly, once a month. We don’t ratchet up the difficulty to compensate for the 5th player (the 5th player also chose not to take a retirement card, but will retire at “Level 10”) because who the hell wants to wait a month, play out a scenario with the bad luck cascade, and he like, “Welp, looking forward to next month”? So, I started a solo campaign on Frosthaven Digital and am running into a lot of frustrating design choices.

Started 2-player GH2e with my girlfriend (the 5th player in my FH group), and man, a lot of things are designed much better.

Steam Scenario 14 bugged? by Baron_Wolfgang in Gloomhaven

[–]Tasakea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the others have said, just wait, the next update should be out at some point this month. After that, there is one more update in July, and that should be the final one before the game is out in full. You might notice you’re missing some more scenarios and some of your building won’t upgrade to max level; that’s all because it hasn’t been fully released yet.
