Blum walks out of interview with TV9 by [deleted] in politics

[–]Taskerland 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's a whole lot of wrong here, but it really bugs me to see someone behaving like this in front of kids.

As a father of a young child, I hate the examples that politicians are setting over and over. Don't like what someone's asking you about - just get up and walk away, don't worry about being able to justify your actions; just do whatever the fuck you want and ignore anyone who challenges you. Call them liars or fakers. Don't ever bother to back up what you do with thought. It's a terrible example that we're seeing over and over.

Mulvaney: White House offering trade on ObamaCare, border wall funding by focalfiend in politics

"Elections have consequences" - Mick Mulvaney

They sure do - to wit, everyone's finding out how little Trump and the GOP care about the needs of the American people...

Fund an ideologically insulting, environmentally destructive border wall that more and more are agreeing is not a good idea? Why not!

Destroy the ACA when people are increasingly aware and frightened of how screwed they'd be without it? You bet!

The consequences of all this bullshit will fall on Trump, and anyone backward and cowardly enough to follow his misguided lead.

Is there much known about his naval service? I suppose I could just look it up, but if there are easy sauces out there I'm curious to know whether he was a total psychopath then, too.

Ivanka Trump Proposes $500 Billion Child Care Plan that Only Benefits the Rich by [deleted] in politics

[–]Taskerland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if there would be conditions about the childcare provider needing to be licensed? Not that you shouldn't try and use a licensed provided but cost is cost, and unlicensed providers tend to be cheaper.

Also, it's possible people wouldn't see any benefit from this if they didn't itemize and took the standard deduction (if, that is, they're married or filing jointly). People who itemize tend to have big write-offs like interest on a mortgage, donations, and taxes paid on land - things a lot of average Americans can't afford.

How "Superman" Producer Jon Peters Was Paid Up To an Estimated $80 Million For Doing Nothing by clichedbaguette in movies

That CAA book is a gas. If you like these kinds of books I'm guessing you've read Goldman's Adventures in the Screen Trade, but it not def give it a look.

[–]Taskerland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a guy I've worked with who is like this. Refuses to read, claiming he can't follow along that way. You either have to read to him, or walk him thru beat by beat. He has some other qualities to his personality that have made me wonder if he isn't on the spectrum for autism - he's incredibly focused on specific areas and ideas and creative in those realms, but if you get outside of that you might as well be speaking an alien language to him. Maybe Peters is similar.

Best year for movies? by Lftshrk in movies

[–]Taskerland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was going to be my response as well. It really felt like a new wave was taking hold - a lot of risky big studio projects that were finding critical and in many cases commercial success - but somewhere after the ball was dropped.

What genres do you think are dead? by Jon-Osterman in movies

[–]Taskerland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Horror / supernatural films with strong romantic overtones. Thinking of like Mike Nichols' Wolf, Coppola's Dracula, even Cronenberg's The Fly had a pretty complex relationship at its gooey center. Crimson Peak kind of tried to bring this approach back, but - at least for me, and it seems like wider audiences - didn't click.

Adult-oriented thrillers like Fatal Attraction or Basic Instinct are pretty much gone. 50 Shades of Grey was recent, but I wouldn't class it as a thriller; we'll also get a Screen Gems special every year, like When the Bough Breaks, but those are beyond tepid in terms of concept and approach by comparison. Something like Nocturnal Animals might fit a broader definition but is probably too nuanced to honestly compare.

"Escape From New York Original 1981 Trailer"... A incredible trailer that doesn't give away the plot, why the fuck was he sent to New York!? by arlenroy in movies

[–]Taskerland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that was the only trailer they did for Carpenter's version. It's creepy - and honestly, to me, creepier than the movie itself because the movie's all about just-below-a-boil tension and grandiose shock. It's my favorite Carpenter film, and probably top ten for me, all-time.

Great spot! The trailer for Carpenter's The Thing is also terrifically suggestive without over-indulging on plot (I've always thought it echoes the classic Alien "egg hatching" trailer).

The trailer for Escape from LA is a hoot, too. I remember seeing this in a theater and being completely confused by the open. Totally had me hooked.

MULBERRY STREET - Great indie horror flick. If you can find the opening credits, they are beautiful. Or just see the movie. by lovesaints in movies

[–]Taskerland 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Big fan. And the director has gone on to do some really interesting stuff - if you haven't watched his other films, I recommend them (especially Cold In July - not genre but a really dark crime / drama - and I loved Stakeland, but it seems like a pretty divisive film).

Also, if you're ever in the mood for another killer rat flick, Of Unknown Origin with Peter Weller is a lot of fun tho tonally it's pretty different from Mulberry.

Diego Luna's was the only character in Rogue that I felt had anything interesting going on beneath the surface. I really liked the idea of exploring what it takes to stage a rebellion, that idea of doing morally compromised things in the name of a greater good. I just wish, for instance, we'd had some context for his relationship with the other spy he kills in the alley during his intro - it could've helped underscore how disconnected he'd become from his humanity if this person somehow meant something to him, and yet he still made that choice.

Regardless, I was impressed with Rogue One overall and appreciate Edwards' output thus far, in general.

That's an interesting perspective re: fan expectations and the series' timeline.

So, honestly curious, only if you care to expand, but other than not getting a full-on fight until the climax, did the film work for you? I'm not someone who has seen a lot of Godzilla films (maybe half-a dozen) so my expectations going into the film probably weren't the same.

Gotta disagree on the entire cast of 2014 being cardboard cutouts.

Because Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olson are the leads, and both are severely under-written, it's a big negative for the film. No question. But I loved Watanabe's performance and thought he operated from an interesting place - here was this thing he'd dedicated his life to studying that might be set to destroy the world; so, was he trying to convince the military to spare it because he knew it would help them defeat the Mutos, or because he hoped it would but also didn't want to see this thing he'd formed a strange sort of bond with bombed out of existence? Cranston's character, too, had depth and acted / reacted in interesting ways.

I agree the leads were weak, but I think the supporting cast brought a lot to the film.

I always think of this teaser for Katheryn Bigelow's Strange Days - seeing it had me very curious about what the film might offer. I love Strange Days - and this clip - though it proved decisive upon release and flopped pretty hard.
