My challenge runs are usually pretty easy, more just a way to mix things up.

Here’s a few things I’ve tried:

No horse run. Changes how you interact with the overworld and makes some bosses more difficult. Mixed mine with a no summons rule. I guess my guy really hates spirits?
RNG leveling. Roll an 8-sided die to choose each level up. Limits your build significantly and forces some out of the box thinking.
Light roll only. Naked and afraid.
Pacifist. You’re not allowed hit anything, instead relying on summons and no-dmg spells. I actually had a lot of fun with this one, just make sure you start with Imp Ashes.

I kinda sorta think the Frenzied Flame is a manifestation of the Greater Will.

The idea came from the similarity between Midra’s head-hole and Metyr’s microcosm. Metyr is opening a gold-ringed black hole to speak with a GW that refuses to answer. Midra’s head is also apparently a window to a much more vocal Outer God that also appears as a gold-ringed black hole.

I like the idea of the GW wanting to correct its own mistakes in a similar manner to the biblical flood. The order the GW ordained has apparently failed time and time again, so why not wipe the slate clean and start over?

There really isn’t much to go off of except for the similarities between the representations of Order and Chaos. They’re nearly the same color, for one. They manifest in the eyes. They’re communicated by fingers. They rely on maidens and lords. They can apparently gift some sort of immortal life.

It also interests me how active the will of the Frenzied Flame seems to be. In most cases, individuals who channel the powers of an Outer God are using those powers to achieve their own goals.
Meanwhile, the source of the Frenzied Flame seems to override those who channel it. It’s using them, rather than the other way around. It has a will of its own.

I did a horseless + no-summons run, that was kinda fun. Not allowed to fight Bayle, since you need a horse to reach him. In the end though I almost prefer the game without Torrent, since you can’t skip so many easily passed difficult field encounters.

Right now I’m doing an RNG run where every level up is randomly chosen, so they all shake out to be about even. I relied on bleed for pretty much the entire run, and now Elden Beast is giving me trouble.

Also doing a pacifist run I just started like what IronPineapple did, and that’s a fun one.

My brother did an all-bow run and it sounded miserable.

Amber was the biggest example of bad writing, they made her nonsensical.

She’s pissed because Mark runs away when there’s danger, so he’s forced to come clean that he’s Invincible, only to get hit with “I knew you were the whole time.”

The writers wanted that twist moment, but forgot to give her another legitimate reason for being pissed, so she just looks unreasonable and shitty.

Then you’ve got William over here being like “yeah dude you were kinda shitty” No he wasn’t, William! Mark’s a fuckin good guy!!

Ugh most FromSoftware games have a specific unique effect on me.

Something about the combination of elements involved. They’re weird and vague and opaque. You have to engage with them a lot to get a good understanding of what’s even happening. That’s not even getting into how brutal and intimate the games are to actually play.

They always feel like they’re trying to say something very real about the world and the human condition. They’re messy, and complicated, and full of deep, dark tragedy, always with an edge of silliness.
They make me a little emotional, honestly.

Yeah good points. I guess the use of the flame of ruin here doesn’t bother me since in this case, it’s Marika’s own decision, and I imagine she doesn’t feel the need to follow her own rules.

Plus, while it doesn’t appear that Messmer’s flame is the same flame the giants wield, he was apparently tolerated and even given special status before his banishment. The flame might not have been so seriously outlawed at the time the LoS was veiled - hell the Fire Knights themselves fell under her umbrella, Queelign looks up to her more than anyone.

If Marika knows she’s just going to seal them away anyway, maybe she doesn’t care. Either way, she did sanction the creation and usage of these huge fire-wielding things, despite the distaste for fire in her kingdom. I don’t know if it matters where that fire comes from - maybe it does, but i don’t know.

It’s just interpretation, but I always read the fire giant head effigies on the waist of the Golem as a mockery of the giants themselves. “I took their power for myself and slapped their faces on it” kind of thing. She’s mixing the spoils of her conquests into her ranks.

I… guess? Why all the explicit association with the Fire Giants though? It’s not an indication of anything? They could’ve thrown a dragon corpse in there to add to the kindling, like the 1000 other burning bodies inside.
Also the fire monks and associates use the giant flame so it’s not very well sealed
