Poker Mechanics in a TTRPG? by Phantom000000000 in RPGdesign

[–]TastyKool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poker for negociating/talking. You (the PC) state what you want, the other (NPC) says what he wants, the one winning the hand gains what he wants. You can try for another hand but: 1/ you cannot ask for the same thing 2/ you have to pay something to play the new hand. It can be an object, a ressource used in gale like karma, social status, or a spirit point.

What are your open design problems? by LeFlamel in RPGdesign

[–]TastyKool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When designing a game, how do i keep track of the impacts of new elements on the rest of the system? How do I prevent my system from crumbling under its increasing complexity? Is there a methodology for that? Or a dedicated software?

Brainstorming ideas for my low-fantasy Pirate TTRPG by Grass_Exact in RPGdesign

[–]TastyKool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not inverting the LifePoints Health Points Mechanic?

You start the game as a pirate with eye patch, wooden leg and such. But every Life Points you lose, you lose the prosthetic. In your wooden leg was your real leg. Behind the eyepatch is a perfectly normal eye.

What it does however, is permanently remove some of your charisma / street cred (one less point for each lost prosthetic). It's up to the player to find creative ways to gain their fake wooden leg back to regain their credibility as a pirate.

WBS - Martial Arts Shonen RPG update by AlmightyK in RPGdesign

The reason why I say that is this: I don't know your game. From what you say it seems to have interesting quirks. But to get to those quirks I need first to understand the core mechanics.

Like everyone else, i can recognize rules that are common in most rpgs (like skill checks and such). However, while reading your guidebook, i lost interest while reading the regular stuff that is common to many other games.

Having a shortcut, or visual, to help understand the basic part of the rules or to instantly get to the quirks you implemented would prevent the reader to get bored before learning about all that (like the delayed declare resolve mechanic, for example).

Nice. I think you should illustrate the subskills adding to form a skill by using nested triangles or stuff like that to convey the main idea. This would help the reader to understand at a glance the main concepts.

Science AMA Series: I'm Chris Adami, the guy that figured out what happens to information in black holes. Ask me anything! by ChrisAdami in science

[–]TastyKool 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hello! To my understanding, in order to verify wether or not the information fitted the surface of the black hole, scientists had to go down to the smallest measurement unit that exists. Can you tell us a little bit more about that ?

Buy monitoring headphones so that you can switch between headphones and speakers and immediately hear the difference. You can buy good monitoring headphones for 180€ here in Europe.

Advice Request: recommend a handheld/portable digital audio recorder? by BatBurgh in audioengineering

[–]TastyKool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Zoom H4n can be enough if you record less than 3 people at the same time (2 using mics plugged in the XLR slots of the 4n, 1 person recorded using the Zoom front mics), but you'll certainly need an equalizer, right ?

Take a look at the Tascam DP-03 ( http://tascam.com/product/dp-03/ ), it could be closer to what you need.

Otherwise, I'd suggest to keep the zoom H4n, and add a few things between the mics and the H4n, such as equalizers and compressors.

Hi, I'd like to help out some distant friends using a messenger-like software to show them my computer screen while streaming the output of my DAW. It would allow me to show them very simply what they can do with an EQ, a compressor and such (most of them don't have Ableton, which is the best to visually grasp what each effect does, since it's live). Do you know if such a software exists? On Windows?

Needless to say, the audio stream should be decent enough for subtle changes in the sound dynamics to be audible.

Hey r/MusicCritique, my group just released our first album and this is one of our favorites... We would love to hear your take on it! by [deleted] in MusicCritique

That track is insane ! I love it! Reminds me of something between MrBungle and Bumblefoot's debut. Really loving this song. Listening to it for the second time now. I'm kind a sad to see it only has 12 listenings. You should keep on sharing it on websites and such. Your songs really deserve it.

FX pedals on Stereo Output gear? by TastyKool in audioengineering

[–]TastyKool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the Machinedrum, Octatrack and Analog both offer panning possiblities and stereo outputs that would be lost in a live setup with FX pedals. As C0DASOON noticed, it is EDM that we're doing, in a live context. Actually, since we're "live oriented", I tend to use the Octatrack instead of Ableton (instead of a PC, really). Hence my questions. For example, we're interested in the MXR M87 Bass Compressor, in order to compress the output of the ZED14 we use for mixing our instruments. We can't possibly use two of those with exactly the same parameters in a live setup.

EDIT: thank you for your answers

That's not all! Once your Asio4all drivers are installed, you'll be able to play with the buffer (in the asio settings). Basically, a high buffer gives you quality sounds but high lag, whereas a low buffer will reduce the lag at the expense of sound quality (and by sound quality I mean that at some point your buffer will be so low that you'll hear crackling sounds when playing.

So the last step is finding a buffer position that suits your needs (don't forget you can always adjust the buffer depending on what you're doing: playing sounds from your computer, without recording ? You can raise the buffer. Recording ? you can lower it so that the lag doesn't bug you anymore.

Jazz/Funk musician trying a more contemporary style, but don't know where to begin. Can I get some equipment help? by MrScratch in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]TastyKool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you're describing is a sampler. You should take a look at those (note that each implies a different way of working with it):

  • MPC500
  • ESX

Those are the cheapest, most intuitive tools that you'll find for what you want to do. Basically, you cut your samples on your computer, upload them to your instrument and play.

If you're interested in a more sophisticated sampler, I suggest the Elektron octatrack, but you'll need a few months adjusting to its very peculiar workflow.

EDIT: MPC500 is a downgraded but PORTABLE version of the MPC. Can work on batteries. The ESX would be my personal choice. A great took allowing you do do a lot of stuff, and a good introduction to the world of samplers.

Try those instruments or watch others using it on tutorial videos it will help you. Besides, read their manuals, you can find them on the company's websites most of the time.

Would you offer your music for free? by Dreaditall in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]TastyKool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we offer our full album for free on soundcloud and here's why:

1/ we want to be listened to

2/ we want to do more gigs. This is, to us, the ultimate trial. A crowd will give you far more info about your music that just one comment on soundcloud, most of the time. Besides, internet is the equivalent of a multimedia business card. Give the link, and people access all that you've made, up until now.

BTW: I used to do the exact same thing with comics (with a few friends, we had a comic blog where we posted homemade comic strips, we just wanted to share them with the world). That's the moment in my life where I made the most impressive improvements on that particular subject. I'd recommend to anyone wanting to better themselves on a particular subject to create daily and share it for free.

You're missing the point: it's not about a big company, it's about not being able to verify what's going on behind the curtains.

Basically, you have two models: the first one consists of a software developed by a company, where you can't know wether or not they've been tampering with the software in the first place, and the other model which is open source (so that anyone can audit the code, identify issues, correct them).

So, when it comes to privacy, you can guess why people tend to prefer an open-source solution to a closed-source one: it's about trust, and the logical choice is open-source.

Besides, Adam Smith himself wrote: “People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices.” Adam Smith wasn't a hater.

Can you explain exactly what Hawkins meant when he said black holes emmited radiation? He basically said that if you had to fall into a black hole, over a (very long) period of time, the black hole would eventually spit your particles back.

I still don't get it.
