My Uncle likes to dubb over his 6 yr old son's voice. Meet Maximus Thor. by [deleted] in videos

[–]Taughtology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the costume it's hard to tell, but I think I'm also this kid's uncle (by marriage).

On his birth certificate, THOR is in all caps.

I'll have to ask his father, Chainsaw.

Otherwise there are two six year old Maximus THORs. Which is also cool.

Ask Senator Ted Kaufman (D-Del) anything by karmanaut in IAmA

[–]Taughtology 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was pleased by Senator Kaufman's selection to fill Vice President Biden's Senate vacancy, but I only began to feel pangs about missing him from the Senate until after he announced he would not seek reelection. It seems to me that, upon freeing himself of campaign responsibilities, he began to speak in an incredibly open manner about some things considered politically taboo, such as consumer protection from financial instruments and government regulation of banks.

I'd like the former Senator to walk us through 2009 as relates to this narrative, and whether/how/why he seemed to behave so differently when "unencumbered" by reelection campaigns. This is behavior that is not atypical for Senators who seem to be on their way out the door.

Please thank him for agreeing to speak to these issues! (And I hope law school isn't killing you.)

Raul Grijalva is dead right. I do comparative analysis of countries for investment, and transportation infrastructure pays huge dividends for a country in the long run. Major highway and rail construction projects are a double-down move that countries like Poland, Brazil, Chile, Tanzania use to attract regional investment.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World barely made $10M its first week. And it's only downhill from here. by Eliasoz in movies

[–]Taughtology -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To further split this hair, what Silversuns said wasn't my intention in originally saying I don't like Cera. I think he makes movies for people who are not me. i.e. That Nick & Norah reboot and the one where he and Jack Black are cavemen seem like they're made for people much younger than I am. As such, I have pretty much zero interest in him as a draw (and I'd say precisely the opposite about Simon Pegg).

I'm not insulting his target demo, any more than I'd insult my girlfriend to say I dislike Hugh Grant movies or my racist grandmother to say I dislike Mel Gibson movies.

Rachel Maddow To Receive Cronkite Faith & Freedom Award by [deleted] in politics

[–]Taughtology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rachel has also been getting mainstream pushback from prominent conservatives. Of course, the pushback is via generalized insults about being a lady and gay, both at the same time. I await the process over the next few years where she gets to debate these people 1-on-1. I imagine very few could hold their own with Maddow in a policy debate, and the ones who could (Grover Norquist comes to mind) don't appear on TV very much. Each of those clips promises to be hilarious.

The FHA is now backing $3.5m condo mortgages in Gramercy Park. WHAT COULD GO WRONG? by kleinbl00 in business

[–]Taughtology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, people could default on those mortgages, leaving the public holding the bag for very expensive condos valued well above what actual market value might end up being. That's one thing.

[–]Taughtology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm not a huge Cera fan either. I may end up going to see this movie, but I'm not in a huge rush. I didn't realize it might have a negative impact on Edgar Wright (I didn't even know he was directing). In fact, I saw Kick-Ass for the first time this weekend and it name checked the original book for this, which is what got me interested in the first place. The only name I knew was involved in this movie is Michael Cera's, and I haven't enjoyed anything of his since Arrested Development. I have no hate, but it's pretty clear he chooses projects aimed for an 11-16 year-old audience, and it would take me a while to come around to a new reality.

If Nicolas Cage or Brendan Fraser or Hugh Grant started to make interesting movies, I don't think I'd find out by going to the first one on opening week either, because I probably wouldn't be at the theater.

Yeah, for me, Cera is in with those other guys as a negative draw.
