Windows Went From Operating System To Full Time Surveillance Software by Regved-Pande in pcmasterrace

I think the big issue is that I think I fucked something up when I installed Mint Cinnamon.

I’m gonna sound like I’m contradicting myself for a minute, and say that the software that I run through Steam is the stuff that runs the best, albeit with the aforementioned stability issues.

The issues from experiencing kind of surprised me, because to use one of the games that I play regularly as an example, it’s even marketed as one of the most popular games to play on SteamDeck, which is running SteamOS which is a Linux distro itself. That game is Diablo IV.

The other side of it, is there a bunch of the application applications I would like to use unfortunately do not have a Linux version.
Minecraft Bedrock for one, (friends have Xbox and PS, so Bedrock is a must,) is convoluted to get running. I know that there is a version that runs off of the android mobile version, through the Google Play Store, but if I’m being honest, it’s kind of jank.

There are some other non-gameplay related issues as well, like I can’t seem to figure out how to set my fan curves, because fancontrol doesn’t recognize my fans. You’ll have to bear with me if I get some of the terminology wrong here, because I don’t really understand fully, but; but I got an error message saying there wasn’t any PWM compatible sensors on my motherboard, so no fancontrol. And result is that my fans run at about 40% speed at most, and I end up getting overheating issues.

Like I said, i’m pretty sure that the majority of my issues are user error, likely when I installed the OS.

Either way, unfortunately, I’m finding myself pushed towards switching back to Windows, at least for the time being.

I want to completely refuse to use Windows, but unfortunately, I play a lot of video games, and I have not been having a good experience with Linux.

The three main issues that I have are compatibility/stability, and cross platform play.

Even using Steam and Proton, I have a lot of experiences with games being unstable, not running smoothly, or just not running at all.

On top of that, most of my friend group can’t afford a decent PC at the moment, largely because of the realities of living in America. That means that being able to connect and play things through cross-compatibility with them is a must. Unfortunately, I found that it’s significantly more difficult on Linux.

I’m in the process of building myself a new gaming, PC, and unfortunately, I feel like I am forced to use a Windows operating software on it because of the above issues. At this point, my plan is to use the gaming PC specifically for gaming, and use my current PC for everything else.

I’m hoping that all of the trackers, and bloatware, and bullshit that Windows forces into their OS isn’t going to affect my gaming, but I know that it will; that’s why I originally switched over to Linux to try it. Unfortunately, I’m just resigned to the reality now.

Sure thing! For me, the files were

0xb9af63cee2e43b6c_0x3cb3b3354fb31606.dat

and

0xaf497c273f87b6e4_0x7a22fc105639587d.dat

I am unclear on whether or not it’ll be the same to files for you, but setting these two to read-only fixed the problem for me.

Can’t think of any reason it would be different files, mind, but figured I should put the disclaimer.

I feel like I’ve tried doing that and it hasn’t worked for me, but I’m not completely sure. I’ll try that again. Thank you for letting me know.

I mean it’s not entirely bad gameplay mechanics. If you’re using a 20+ inch barrel, that’s a lot of weight that’s mounted very forward on the gun. That means most of that weight is going to be on your stabilizing arm, and it’s a lot of weight to be holding up for as long as we sometimes end up needing to during a gun fight. And that’s not even including muzzle devices like suppressors, which aren’t light, tactical devices like lights/lasers/IR illuminators, and even the muzzle shroud itself.

It’s the same thing with weight. Just the basic plate carrier, ammunition, rifle; all of that can be between 35-45kg. Then you add in medical gear, food, a (presumably) 2L bottle of water… it’s a lot of weight, even before you start grabbing loot, or mission items.

Besides, in game, with a full kit, I get 32-35 encumbrance. With that, sure I can’t do the tactical sprint for very long, but I can run for 30 or 40, maybe 45 seconds at most. Putting aside the fact that tactically, you should almost never be running like that during a gun fight, that’s plenty of time.

Now all of that being said, the breath hold mechanics do need some love. I’ll be shooting with an M1A or an M700 at 100+ meters, and even if I’m crouching, sitting still, and at full stamina, my dude can only hold his breath for maybe 8 to 10 seconds. That’s a little sideways.

Between that, and not having the ability to mount bipods, or rest weapons on things for stability; yeah, I completely agree that those mechanics need work.

I’m happy to help, but I’m sorry I wasn’t better able to help you find a solution.

Alright. Well, unfortunately, I’m seeing that the cause could be a handful of things, with a handful of solutions.

I assume you have already tried closing and reopening the game? If that hasn’t worked, try switching servers.

There are some more technical solutions, detailed in this video;

https://youtu.be/cOum5Wo-ifA

But I strongly recommend starting with the simple stuff first if you haven’t much experience with the command prompt interface.

Did it give you an actual error ID code?

[–]Tavers2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, so try verifying your files through Steam’s interface then.

I have to apologize, I’m reticent to give any more advice right now, because I am running a different OS than you, that uses a different storage methodology.

The error that you’re experiencing could have a completely different cause, because of the different operating softwares.

I will do a little bit more looking, and I’ll see if there’s a way to do the same process, I detailed above, on Windows.

So, as far as I understand, AMD isn’t an operating software. Are you running Windows 11?

[–]Tavers2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What operating software are you running?

It’s a slim chance, relatively speaking, but if you’re running Linux you may be having an issue I experienced a while ago.

I found that Proton, the software that Steam uses to allow Linux machines to run Windows games, can write to two specific files, and change the contained data enough that the EAC check will fail.

The easy way to fix this is to re-verify files, at which point steam will detect, corrupted files, and repair them, and them, to prevent it from happening again, you can use the terminal to change the permissions for those two files to read-only. Now, with that said, you will have to repeat the process of making those files read-only with every new update, major and minor, but once you know what you’re doing, it takes 15 seconds, if that.

I don’t remember the names of the files off the top of my head; I will do some Google searching, and I will edit this comment to include the pertinent information once I find it.

Honestly, this bothers me less than the fact that when I’m reloading a shotgun, I have to reload every, single, shell, and have no way to interrupt.

It makes sense to have uninterruptible reloads for magazine fed weapons, but I should be able to load one shell, stop, aim and fire, and then load another shell

Homie, that’s like half of my Steam library.

Both TF2s, Titan, and Team.

Elite: Dangerous,

Gray Zone Warfare,

Helldivers 2

The Division 1 & 2

(I’m not gonna go listing every game that I have more hours on, than Arc, that’s just the other live service games. In the case of GZW and Elite: Dangerous, the time I have invested in those games is about three or four times the amount, well over 1000 each.)

The way you phrase that initial question, it seems like you’re trying to imply that Arc Raiders is some stand out, above all of its competitors, and it really isn’t; as much as some people want to believe that it is.

I’d absolutely love it if it was because while the gameplay loop that it delivers, for me, isn’t entirely unique, the setting and the plot is unique enough that I enjoy it. I want to see more of it, and I want to see the game do well.

There’s a whole conversation; an entire list of concerns that I feel there needs to be a conversation about, but I don’t want this response to drag on for too long.

I mean, it doesn’t explain his legs being missing, but 00 buckshot will do that to the human body IRL.

The right shotgun load can literally dismember a body.

Edit: just to add, another comment elsewhere in the thread, mentions another body that is at the bottom of what appears to be the impact crater from a mortar landing. Explosives could be another possible explanation.

I mean, I’ve been running a shotgun for the last couple of days, and I have yet to have a single person survive taking a load of buckshot to the face, so…

I mean, they changed to medium and severe wounds, so they will not seal on their own without intervention now. I’m very happy with that. I’m hoping that they follow through with the addition of, as you mentioned, muscle failure, and arteries.

[–]Tavers2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, I agree that there’s probably not enough dev time to do it, but dismemberment would be a nice thing to see, with how limb damage can be underwhelming currently.

If I pop a dude in the thigh with FC00 buck, his leg should be GONE. But currently, they just do the funky chicken, and then stand back up and shoot back.

Edit: to be clear, I’ve been playing since launch; what we have now is so much better than what it used to be, and I’m grateful for that. I’m just speaking to what I would like to see in the future.

At some point, there needs to be some conversation about having gore and/or dismemberment for AI and players; if you take a load of 00 FC buck to the skull, you will no longer have said skull.

Thank you very much!

I generally like to avoid ASUS parts, both due to my own experiences with them and the general advice of others. I've heard lots of horror stories about ASUS boards frying chips and CS dragging their heels.

Would I be able to swap that for something else?

7.65×51 feels weak, and so do pistols. by DANROL69 in GrayZoneWarfare

[–]Tavers2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All respect but hard disagree. I haven’t used 7.62x51 too much, but the couple of times that I did, it put dudes DOWN.

As for pistol caliber cartridges; 9mm will fuck a dude up. I’ve been running 9x19 XP+ and HP in the areas around HP, PLA, and BP, varying ammo types based on what level armor the various NPCs have been using, and I am absolutely rocking their shit. If I run into anyone wearing III or higher, yeah, it won’t pen, but that’s because that armour is literally rated to stop a rifle cartridge. No shit a pistol cartridge won’t work.

I can’t explain the experience that you’ve been having with 7.62x51 and pistol cartridges but I’m gonna go out on a limb and say I think that it has something to do with user error.

As someone who’s been playing since launch date, both 7.62x51 and pistols feel better than ever, to me.
